- Chapter 27 - What's wrong? My Alpha doesn't...
They had only shared a few breakfasts, yet an unspoken understanding had already formed between them. Yu Jinzhao naturally sat beside Pei Daowan as soon as she picked up her meal, her movements practiced as if she had done this a thousand times before. Pei Daowan silently tolerated her increasingly close proximity, even allowing her to breach the boundaries of social personal space.
“This morning’s steamed bun is delicious! You should try it too. We need to give the auntie a raise,” Yu Jinzhao said, her eyes crinkling into crescents. The small steamed bun reminded her of the street-side buns from her hometown, the taste so familiar.
“Slow down. No one’s going to steal it from you,” Pei Daowan sighed helplessly, a hint of indulgence in her eyes. Finding the scene both childish and amusing, she flicked Yu Jinzhao’s forehead with her finger.
The tap wasn’t hard, but Yu Jinzhao made a dramatic show of it, shaking her head several times and gazing at Pei Daowan with feigned innocence.
Pei Daowan leaned back in her chair, her spine slightly curved, left leg crossed over her right, foot tapping lightly. In a posture of complete leisure, she quietly watched Yu Jinzhao’s antics.
“Good sister~”
Yu Jinzhao’s mouth was still stuffed with a steamed bun, chopsticks poised to place a xiaolongbao on Pei Daowan’s plate. She mumbled, “Good sister, it’s really delicious! You have to try it.”
Pei Daowan patiently took a small bite. Truthfully, she didn’t have strong preferences when it came to food; she neither found it particularly delicious nor unpalatable.
Not as good as Yu Jinzhao’s cooking, Pei Daowan thought to herself, offering a perfunctory reply, “It’s alright.”
Yu Jinzhao suddenly noticed Pei Daowan’s unusual attire today. Normally, Pei Daowan would wear a simple blouse paired with a blazer, projecting an air of high intelligence and mature sophistication.
Today, she had abandoned her usual blazer in favor of a long black dress.
The dress was exquisitely tailored, its smooth lines cascading from her shoulders in a sinuous drape. Crafted from silk satin, it clung naturally to her curves while maintaining an air of elegance and poise.
If one could overlook the half-eaten steamed bun…
In that instant, Yu Jinzhao felt Pei Daowan was being too indulgent. Wearing such a refined dress to eat xiaolongbao with her? If she were dressed like that, she’d insist on dining at a high-end restaurant; anything less would be a waste of the outfit.
“Are you going to that private banquet tonight?”
“Yes, the one I mentioned before. It’s half-private, half-business. You should come with me. Don’t dress too formally—it’ll be hard to relax.”
Yu Jinzhao’s face fell for a moment. This meant she wouldn’t be able to have dinner with Pei Daowan tonight. They’d only managed two dinners together, and now they were already missing another one.
Noticing Yu Jinzhao’s expression, Pei Daowan reached out and tilted her chin upward, forcing her to meet her gaze. “What’s wrong? Not happy?”
Under Pei Daowan’s intense gaze, Yu Jinzhao had nowhere to hide. She could only nod honestly.
She really wasn’t happy. Their only time together was in the mornings and evenings. The mornings were too short—they barely had time to eat breakfast before rushing out. Evenings were the only time they had any real time together.
Besides, even evenings weren’t always free. She had already planned what to cook for dinner tonight, and now even that little time was being taken away. Of course she wasn’t happy.
“So, do you still want to go with me tonight?”
“Huh?”
Pei Daowan watched Yu Jinzhao’s dazed expression, a hint of displeasure darkening her eyes. The grip on Yu Jinzhao’s chin tightened.
“It’s fine if you don’t want to go.”
“I do! I definitely want to go! Where is it?”
Afraid Pei Daowan might change her mind, Yu Jinzhao rested her entire chin in Pei Daowan’s palm, gazing up at her with eager eyes.
Pei Daowan couldn’t resist pinching her cheek again. Smooth, supple, and firm—truly the skin of youth. The texture was irresistible.
“It’s near where you met Li Jin this afternoon, on the 17th floor of the Fu Hua Hotel. It starts around 7 PM. Text me after your meeting with Li Jin, and I’ll pick you up. We should arrive early.”
“Do I need to prepare anything?”
“Not really. Just come with me.”
“But… what identity should I use?”
At these kinds of banquets, networking is crucial, so one’s status matters. Yu Jinzhao didn’t want to rely on her family’s name, yet it seemed to be the only identity she had.
Pei Daowan remained composed, while Yu Jinzhao grew increasingly anxious.
“What? Isn’t my Alpha good enough?”
Yu Jinzhao’s head snapped up so abruptly she nearly knocked Pei Daowan off balance. She clumsily lunged forward to steady her.
Meeting Pei Daowan’s ambiguous, half-smiling gaze, Yu Jinzhao’s mind short-circuited. She felt her brain had completely fried, her neck and cheeks flushing visibly crimson.
“I…”
“What? Are you unhappy about it?”
Yu Jinzhao was flustered, wanting to say something but unable to form coherent words, only shaking her head frantically.
After a long moment, Yu Jinzhao finally felt her bl00d cool slightly, her expression becoming utterly earnest. “Pei Daowan, I won’t embarrass you.”
“Alright, alright, I know. Now hurry up and eat.”
Pei Daowan narrowed her eyes slightly and suddenly said, “Change out of that outfit later. Wear the one we picked out at the mall that day.”
Yu Jinzhao immediately remembered. They had gone shopping together to choose outfits for the visit to the old family estate, and Pei Daowan had picked out a dress for her as well. But Yu Jinzhao had never worn it, unwilling to meet Yu Xincheng in clothes chosen by Pei Daowan, so it had remained untouched in her closet.
“Okay,” Yu Jinzhao replied, abandoning the rest of her meal. She lost her appetite for the steamed buns and rushed upstairs to change in three quick strides.
Just a few minutes later, Yu Jinzhao stood at the corner of the staircase, calling out to her from the same spot where she greeted Pei Daowan every morning: “Pei Daowan, look at me.”
The suit was a classic charcoal gray, understated and composed, yet it shimmered with a soft luster under the sunlight, perfectly complementing Yu Jinzhao’s refined demeanor.
The single-breasted design was simple and elegant. With each gesture, the three silver buttons on the sleeves glinted like stars, radiating a cool metallic aura that added a sharp edge to her otherwise gentle presence.
A gentleman carries his tools within, awaiting the opportune moment to act.
Pei Daowan suddenly felt this proverb take on tangible form, especially as she observed the noble air that radiated from Yu Jinzhao’s every movement.
This refined grace could only be cultivated through years of proper education and cultural immersion. If Yu Jinzhao hadn’t come here, she would undoubtedly be highly sought after in her own world.
Yu Jinzhao descended the stairs slowly. The V-neckline of her suit subtly elongated her neck, enhancing her elegant and slender silhouette.
“Beautiful!”
Before Yu Jinzhao could speak, Pei Daowan praised her first. Pei Daowan rarely complimented anyone or anything, but Yu Jinzhao truly looked stunning—a beauty that radiated from within.
Yu Jinzhao was perfectly suited for suits, especially given her broad shoulders, slender waist, and long legs, which amplified her natural advantages. Since she usually dressed casually, seeing her in formal attire was a genuine surprise for Pei Daowan.
Despite having identical features, Pei Daowan immediately sensed the difference between them the moment Yu Jinzhao walked in.
“You know, my first suit was also charcoal gray,” Yu Jinzhao said, smiling. “Back when I was just starting my business, I had just landed a project and splurged on a custom-made suit for a presentation.”
She chuckled softly. “I didn’t have much money back then—it was a combination of family funds and my own savings. That suit cost nearly ten thousand yuan. I wore it everywhere to give speeches and attract investors, taking my first step into entrepreneurship.”
“Next time, you should try green,” Pei Daowan suggested. “Dark green, pine green, olive green—any shade would look vibrant on you.”
Yu Jinzhao, with a hint of smugness, declared, “I definitely look good in green. I’m not just saying that! When I was in school, I always gravitated toward green clothes and bought so many. It wasn’t until I saw an entire wardrobe filled with green that I finally restrained myself and started buying less.”
Pei Daowan remained noncommittal. In truth, Yu Jinzhao’s aura wasn’t just composed of composure; it also radiated an inner vitality, making green a truly fitting color for her.
“Yu Jinzhao, how old are you this year?”
“If you’re asking me, I’m 25.”
Pei Daowan’s gaze grew deep and enigmatic. Her fingers twitched, as if wanting to reach out, but she let her hand fall back down, murmuring wistfully, “25… such a wonderful age. So young.”
“Come on, you’re still young too, sis! I’ve always thought women around 30 are the most captivating—experienced, mature, and full of life. I’m practically envious!”
Pei Daowan scoffed, “Such childish notions.”
Yu Jinzhao readily admitted, “Heh, I used to think that way. I was obsessed with older women back then, especially those who were decisive at work and independent in life. I admired them so much.”
“Later, I gradually realized that maturity, responsibility, and capability aren’t necessarily proportional to age. They’re more about one’s character. So I stopped being fixated on that.”
Yu Jinzhao added with a hint of self-praise, “I’m the kind of person who constantly reflects on myself, you know? Even though being a lesbian often means having a ‘sister complex,’ I’ve managed to adjust that mindset.”
“Oh? So you don’t like your sister anymore?”
Yu Jinzhao immediately denied it. “Of course not! I still have a bit of a sister complex, but what I like is more of a feeling, you know?”
Pei Daowan couldn’t quite grasp what Yu Jinzhao meant by “liking her sister.” She considered herself somewhat emotionally detached. Throughout her life, she had never formed close connections with anyone except her mother.
She also couldn’t understand the confusion of adolescence or the emotions of romantic love. She had never experienced any of that. At one point, she even felt that emotions were rather useless—difficult to control and prone to clouding judgment—so she had always avoided them.
As for her feelings toward Yu Jinzhao, she couldn’t quite define them. Like? Not really. She doubted she was even capable of such feelings. She simply found Yu Jinzhao interesting, a unique presence unlike anyone else she had met.
She and Yu Jinzhao were fundamentally different. In her darkest moments, Yu Jinzhao would only think about regrouping, refilling the toner, and starting over. Meanwhile, she herself craved to drag everyone down with her.
Beneath Yu Jinzhao’s seemingly bright exterior lay a twisted, obsessive darkness. In contrast, Yu Jinzhao possessed an unwavering life force. Their paths were destined to diverge.
“Yu Jinzhao!”
“You…”
“What is it?”
“Nothing. Hurry up and finish your breakfast so you can get to work. I’m heading out now. Don’t forget about the banquet tonight.”
“Don’t worry, I won’t.”
Yu Jinzhao hastily stuffed the last steamed bun into her mouth, grabbed a tissue, and rushed out the door. She was already running late. Though she didn’t need to clock in, she didn’t want to reinforce the image of a lazy, useless rich kid.
After confirming the time and location with Li Jin that morning, Yu Jinzhao had put the matter out of her mind.
Her thoughts were now consumed by the evening’s banquet. She couldn’t help but wonder who Pei Daowan would introduce her to. Would there be friends? Business partners?
Does this mean Pei Daowan is finally acknowledging me? Is she willing to include me in her inner circle?
The thought sent a jolt through Yu Jinzhao’s heart, as if struck by a powerful electric current, causing it to instantly boil over.
Joy surged through her like a tidal wave, crashing against her heart in relentless waves. She felt as if she were floating on clouds, her body weightless, every cell singing with exhilaration.
She couldn’t help but mentally rehearse what she should say tonight, how she should act, and most importantly, how to shed the image of the original owner—a useless second-generation wastrel.
By 2:50 PM, Yu Jinzhao had already arrived at the designated meeting place. Li Jin hadn’t arrived yet. Instead of playing on her phone, she casually flipped through a book from the shop while waiting.
After what seemed like an eternity, Yu Jinzhao glanced at the time. It was 3:26 PM. Li Jin was nearly half an hour late, and there were no messages on her phone. A knot of anxiety began to tighten in her stomach.
Still, she refrained from calling or texting to check on Li Jin. Instead, she opened the special contacts list at the top of her phone.
