- Chapter 29 - This is Yu Jinzhao's pheromone scent...
Yu Jinzhao practically sprinted down the stairs. Not even waiting for the elevator from the fifth floor, she appeared at the lobby entrance in under a minute.
After catching her breath, Yu Jinzhao feigned composure. As she stepped outside, she immediately spotted the familiar car parked by the curb.
Taking the steps two at a time, she knocked on the passenger door and hopped inside.
Before she could even straighten up, she flashed a grin. “Hehe, I was pretty quick, right?”
Pei Daowan smiled and helped her fasten her seatbelt. Her long hair brushed against Yu Jinzhao’s cheek, carrying a cool fragrance mixed with the scent of shampoo.
In that instant, Yu Jinzhao felt a strange heat rising at the back of her neck. She couldn’t help but swallow, her hand instinctively reaching back to press against her nape, trying to suppress some restless stirring.
Pei Daowan didn’t miss her movement. Her gaze paused briefly, and after a moment’s hesitation, she reached out and pressed her hand against the back of Yu Jinzhao’s neck.
In that instant, Yu Jinzhao felt all her bl00d rush to her head, especially to the back of her neck, which felt like it was about to burn.
“Pei…”
Pei Daowan’s expression turned serious. Usually a bit cold when silent, she now radiated icy frost. “Don’t move!”
Yu Jinzhao froze instantly. She could feel Pei Daowan’s fingertips brushing aside her stray hairs, the touch pressing against her skin. She felt like she was about to explode.
Pei Daowan seemed to catch a faint scent of mint—like morning dew or a spring breeze—instantly refreshing her.
Is this Yu Jinzhao’s pheromone scent?!
The gland looked slightly swollen and red. Had she never had it checked?
That beast’s gland had been destroyed; it couldn’t possibly emit that nauseating stench anymore. Could this new scent be Yu Jinzhao’s own?
“Have you had your gland checked since you were hospitalized last time?”
Yu Jinzhao blinked, realizing what Pei Daowan meant. Though she had crammed on ABO knowledge, she rarely encountered it in daily life. Besides the initial swelling and pain on the day she transmigrated, her gland had remained largely inactive, making Yu Jinzhao almost forget about it entirely.
“It didn’t seem like anything serious, so I didn’t bother going to the hospital.”
“Do you even realize your glands are swollen?!”
Pei Daowan’s voice was utterly devoid of emotion, and her expressionless face made the words even more chilling. Yu Jinzhao surreptitiously tugged at her sleeve, her voice softening into a coaxing tone.
“It’s fine. It doesn’t usually bother me. I’ve never really paid attention to it. Sometimes it feels a little swollen, warm, and achy, but it goes away after a while.”
Pei Daowan felt a lump in her throat, a pang of guilt twisting her heart. Ultimately, it was her fault. She had fed the forbidden drug to that beast, permanently damaging Yu Jinzhao’s glands. She hadn’t anticipated Yu Jinzhao would come here.
“Don’t go to work tomorrow. I’ll take you to the hospital to get your glands checked.”
Yu Jinzhao shrugged dismissively. “It’s fine. I didn’t have glands to begin with, so it doesn’t really affect me.”
Hearing this, Pei Daowan’s forehead veins bulged, her eyes darkening. “Do you even understand what it means for an Alpha to lack glands and be unable to release pheromones?”
“Of course I do!”
Of course she knew what it meant. But she wasn’t from this world to begin with, and she never had glands. What difference did it make to her whether she had more or fewer?
If she had to choose, she would definitely pick being a Beta. It was so much better—no heat cycles to worry about, no being bound by biological imperatives.
Pei Daowan was so furious she didn’t want to speak to Yu Jinzhao. Gripping the steering wheel tightly, she said coldly, “I can see you don’t understand!”
This seemed to be the first time Pei Daowan had ever lost her temper so completely. In Yu Jinzhao’s memory, she had always maintained a cool, detached demeanor, occasionally revealing a fleeting hint of vulnerability that she quickly concealed.
Or perhaps she had shown a charming, poised facade in public. But now, Yu Jinzhao could clearly see Pei Daowan’s lips pressed into a sharp, thin line, her knuckles white from clenching her fists, and her pupils like shattered ice.
“I…”
“I don’t want to hear you right now.”
With that, Pei Daowan started the car. The engine’s roar drowned out Yu Jinzhao’s feeble protests. She was in a terrible mood.
It wasn’t just anger at Yu Jinzhao; more than anything, she was furious with herself. She couldn’t even pinpoint the reason for her anger, yet she was stubbornly venting her frustration on Yu Jinzhao.
Pei Daowan’s temples throbbed violently, as if she could hear the roar of bl00d rushing through her skull. Though they were in the city, the car was hurtling at nearly 40 miles per hour, the roadside barriers twisting into grotesque shapes in her peripheral vision.
The fifteen-minute drive had been brutally compressed into less than ten minutes by Pei Daowan. Even after the car screeched to a halt, the lingering fury remained etched on her face.
Yu Jinzhao desperately wanted to do something to comfort her, but she feared provoking Pei Daowan further. She could only trail behind her, her usually confident posture now stiff and restrained, leaving Pei Daowan uncertain what to feel.
Sensing Pei Daowan’s anger had subsided somewhat, Yu Jinzhao mustered the courage to tug gently on her sleeve, her voice sweet and coaxing. “Good sister~ Please don’t be angry anymore. I’ll go to the hospital first thing tomorrow morning.”
Pei Daowan sighed heavily, finally relenting. She roughly grabbed Yu Jinzhao by the collar, but her movements became surprisingly gentle as she brushed aside the stray hairs at the nape of Yu Jinzhao’s neck and carefully applied the suppressant patch she had retrieved from the car earlier.
“This is a suppressant patch, suitable for both Alphas and Omegas. It reduces swelling, relieves pain, and dissipates heat. You should always keep one on hand. If you feel any discomfort in your glands, apply it immediately and then seek medical attention. Do you understand?”
Yu Jinzhao’s eyes sparkled brightly. Anyone seeing her would have thought she was being rewarded, unaware of the cold treatment she had received the entire way.
“Mhm, I understand. Don’t worry, I’ll be fine.”
The anger Pei Daowan had barely suppressed threatened to resurface. Yu Jinzhao’s carelessness toward her own health was infuriating. Part compromise, part resignation, she said, “Forget it. Don’t bother getting one yourself. I’ll get it for you.”
Letting Yu Jinzhao handle it herself would take forever, and she might not even know which brands were reliable. It was better to take charge of this herself.
“It’s not that I don’t care about my health,” Yu Jinzhao explained. “I just didn’t think it was a big deal. Plus, I’ve been so busy lately. I was planning to see a doctor after this busy period ends.”
Pei Daowan remained displeased. “You’d better.”
Yu Jinzhao gently patted the back of Pei Daowan’s hand, reassuring her.
For a moment, Yu Jinzhao’s words struck a nerve. But pride prevented Pei Daowan from admitting it. “Don’t be so disrespectful,” she snapped.
Yu Jinzhao pouted, muttering, “Good sister, you’re only three years older than me.”
Pei Daowan remained silent. In her previous life, she had died at thirty-seven, making her a full twelve years older than Yu Jinzhao—a complete zodiac cycle.
The realization darkened Pei Daowan’s gaze, and she slowed her pace. A whole zodiac cycle older!
She knew about women who were attracted to older sisters, but at her age, she was more like an aunt than a sister. Though a twinge of displeasure stirred within her, her hands moved with gentle care.
Tilting her head slightly, she meticulously straightened Yu Jinzhao’s suit collar and checked the sleeves for wrinkles.
“Did you bring a hair clip?”
Yu Jinzhao’s high ponytail today gave her a crisp, professional look, like a competent young manager.
“No,” Yu Jinzhao shook her head truthfully. She had rushed out this morning, barely bringing any personal items.
Pei Daowan pulled a black hair clip from her bag, brushed back stray strands behind Yu Jinzhao’s ear, and secured them herself, ensuring no loose hairs would stick out as she moved.
After arranging both ears, Pei Daowan deliberately brushed her fingers along Yu Jinzhao’s jawline, gazing at her intently, lost in thought.
So beautiful!
She looked like a young princess about to embark on a campaign—noble, elegant, and dignified. This must be Yu Jinzhao’s true self, Pei Daowan thought.
Seeing Pei Daowan staring at her in a daze, Yu Jinzhao felt a sudden surge of hope that perhaps Pei Daowan truly cared for her, that these tender gestures weren’t just wishful thinking on her part.
Yu Jinzhao felt she should do something. Her fingers twitched slightly as she tentatively reached out. Sensing no resistance from Pei Daowan, she gently placed her hand in Pei Daowan’s palm.
Their fingers brushed, and Yu Jinzhao felt a slightly cooler temperature, a little lower than her own. In the next moment, Yu Jinzhao tightened her grip, transforming their tentative touch into an entwined handhold.
“Let’s go,” Yu Jinzhao said.
Pei Daowan showed no displeasure at her actions, silently acquiescing to the series of movements. Hand in hand, they entered the banquet hall.
As Pei Daowan had organized the event, most attendees recognized her face. However, Yu Jinzhao, standing beside her, was unfamiliar to many.
Occasionally, a few glances fell upon them, but Pei Daowan remained oblivious, pulling Yu Jinzhao half a step ahead as they moved toward the center of the banquet hall.
Yu Jinzhao was even more indifferent. Having attended such gatherings before, she showed no trace of awkwardness. When her eyes met those of onlookers, she responded with a polite smile.
For a moment, Yu Jinzhao felt like a kept man, with Pei Daowan as her sugar mama, currently showing her the ropes of high society.
The thought sparked a strange excitement within her, a subtle emotion spreading through her heart. I’m Pei Daowan’s kept man, she mused.
Several people had already guessed Yu Jinzhao’s identity, their expressions a complex mix of emotions, difficult to decipher.
After all, Pei Daowan had never brought anyone to these semi-private, semi-social gatherings before. Coupled with recent rumors that an Alpha from the Yu Family had taken a liking to Pei Daowan, the identity of the person standing beside her became obvious.
Soon, Pei Daowan formally introduced Yu Jinzhao. At that moment, Yu Jinzhao was the picture of docility, nestled close to Pei Daowan. To anyone unaware of the truth, it would have seemed as though Yu Jinzhao were the Omega, the one marrying down in status.
Pei Daowan found the situation somewhat amusing, yet her heart softened slightly. She knew exactly what Yu Jinzhao was trying to achieve. She tightened her grip on Yu Jinzhao’s arm, pulling her closer.
Below, many confirmed their suspicions. Some sneered, thinking, “No matter how powerful Pei Daowan is, she still has to cling to the Yu Family’s high branch.”
Others sighed, acknowledging Pei Daowan’s business genius and her marriage alliance with the Yu Family. “Looks like we’ll really have to cozy up to her now,” they muttered.
Yu Jinzhao paid no attention to these convoluted thoughts. Tonight, her role was crystal clear: she needed only be Pei Daowan’s decorative piece, occasionally offering polite remarks. She relished the simplicity.
Several individuals with ulterior motives tried to seize the opportunity to strike up conversations with Yu Jinzhao, but Pei Daowan subtly deflected each attempt.
This infuriated those with impure intentions. After all, this was Yu Jinzhao—the sole Alpha heir of Jiang City’s tycoon, Yu Xincheng. To secure her connection would mean ruling Jiang City unopposed.
