- Chapter 30 - Looking back, her life had been nothing more than...
Throughout the evening, Yu Jinzhao acted like a henpecked husband, doing whatever Pei Daowan said. If everyone didn’t know that no one would dare impersonate Yu Jinzhao, they might have suspected this was a fake.
Hadn’t the rumors painted Yu Jinzhao as someone who indulged in every vice, arrogant, and wildly conceited? How could marriage have transformed her so completely? Could Pei Daowan truly possess such influence?
Liu Qingyi observed their interactions with a complex expression. She had been on high alert, remembering Pei Daowan’s warning that Yu Jinzhao would attend tonight’s gathering.
She certainly didn’t approve of Yu Jinzhao. Before marrying her, Pei Daowan had been perfectly fine with the Pei Family—flawed as they were, they were still better than Yu Jinzhao.
Yu Jinzhao was practically the tyrant of Jiang City. While her father at least cared about his reputation and avoided reckless behavior, Yu Jinzhao was the epitome of a spoiled brat. How else could she have gotten away with extortion and forced sales?
Now, Yu Jinzhao’s behavior clashed so sharply with her reputation that Liu Qingyi felt like she was punching cotton. She had been ready to bombard Yu Jinzhao with criticism, but now she was left speechless.
Liu Qingyi sighed, her brow furrowed with worry. Seeing Pei Daowan seemingly accept Yu Jinzhao’s presence, holding her hand throughout the evening without a hint of displeasure, made her feel like the world had turned surreal. Is this really the Pei Daowan I know?
After finally managing to greet everyone, Pei Daowan finally found a moment to introduce Yu Jinzhao to Liu Qingyi.
“Qingyi, this is Yu Jinzhao, my Alpha. I mentioned her earlier.”
My Alpha!
Though Pei Daowan had already introduced Yu Jinzhao to the crowd, she hadn’t used the phrase “my Alpha.” Hearing those words now left Yu Jinzhao feeling utterly overwhelmed by happiness.
Liu Qingyi’s gaze held a hint of resentment. If Yu Jinzhao hadn’t been present, she would have blurted out, “Sis! Blink twice if you’re being threatened!”
Sensing Liu Qingyi’s unease, Pei Daowan felt a pang of helplessness. What can I do? That scoundrel’s reputation is just too terrible. I’ve already tried my best to speak well of her to Qingyi.
Unaware of these complicated dynamics, Yu Jinzhao noticed Pei Daowan’s special regard for Liu Qingyi and treated him with equal respect.
“Hello, hello, I’m Yu Jinzhao. It’s a pleasure to meet you. I’ve prepared a gift, but it’s not convenient to present it now. I’ll send it over later.”
Liu Qingyi’s face was wary. What’s this? No free lunches here. I’m not that easily bought off.
Pei Daowan interjected smoothly, “Qingyi, A-Zhao isn’t what you think. Those are just rumors. Don’t believe everything you hear. Even if you don’t trust her, surely you trust me?”
Yu Jinzhao smiled innocently, as if to confirm Pei Daowan’s words. Liu Qingyi had a strange feeling—was this a case of “the wife sings, the husband follows”?
He grudgingly accepted that Yu Jinzhao’s character might be decent, but he still kept his conversation with her brief, appearing somewhat disinterested. Yu Jinzhao didn’t press the matter. Tonight, she fully embraced her role as a decorative figure, behaving obediently and docilely, practically wagging her tail and placing it in Pei Daowan’s palm.
Later, Pei Daowan led her through the usual formalities—making small talk, exchanging toasts, and smiling until Yu Jinzhao’s face ached. See? she thought. Even though I can handle these occasions, I still don’t enjoy them.
Pei Daowan actually felt even more strongly about these gatherings. If she could avoid it, she wouldn’t interact with these people at all.
As nine o’clock approached, the banquet guests gradually departed. Yu Jinzhao and Pei Daowan exchanged smiles and simultaneously let out sighs of relief, an unspoken understanding flowing between them.
After suppressing her thoughts all evening, Yu Jinzhao’s words finally began to bubble to the surface.
“Hey, you know that CEO who made his fortune in solar energy? I saw him at the company recently. He was practically groveling before Yu Xincheng back then, but tonight he looked so much darker!”
She paused, teasingly adding, “My first thought was, ‘Did he eat too much soy sauce? How did he get so dark all of a sudden?’ Ha ha!”
Pei Daowan couldn’t help but laugh, amused by Yu Jinzhao’s absurd and nonsensical humor. Her gaze softened with affection, watching her with indulgent fondness.
“And there’s more! That Mr. Ma in the corner? He spent the whole night eating corn cakes and vegetables, not saying a word to anyone.”
Pei Daowan smiled. “You’ve been observing these people all evening?”
“Of course! I scrutinized every single guest. Since I couldn’t say anything, I needed something to occupy myself. And you know what? Watching their little quirks and habits was actually quite entertaining.”
Growing warm, Yu Jinzhao casually removed her suit jacket and tossed it aside, letting her long hair cascade down as she unbuttoned the top two buttons of her shirt.
Yu Jinzhao was radiant, her sleeves rolled up to her elbows, her voice rising and falling with dramatic flair, giving off an air of unrestrained freedom.
Pei Daowan felt herself being drawn in, her gaze darkening as she slowly regulated her breathing to calm her racing heart. Yet she couldn’t tear her eyes away.
Liu Qingyi returned just as the last guests were leaving, only to find this scene unfolding before her.
The two women, one speaking and the other listening, one brimming with joy and the other indulging her, their dynamic a surprising blend of harmony and warmth.
Liu Qingyi slowed her steps, reluctant to interrupt their moment. Pei Daowan seemed to be in good spirits, and Yu Jinzhao didn’t appear as detestable as the rumors suggested.
Yu Jinzhao was the first to notice Liu Qingyi’s return. She greeted her with a smile, “You’re back! You must be exhausted from today. Wait here, I’ll go get your gift.”
Pei Daowan composed herself, straightening her posture. While Yu Jinzhao went to retrieve the gift, she made small talk with Liu Qingyi.
Yu Jinzhao returned quickly, within minutes, presenting the gift with a warm smile. Liu Qingyi, still feeling somewhat awkward, hesitated, wanting to refuse.
Pei Daowan quickly interjected, “It’s fine, just take it. It’s not anything particularly expensive—just a small gift for our first meeting.”
“Then thank you,” Liu Qingyi said. “I didn’t prepare anything today, but I’ll make it up to you next time we meet.”
Yu Jinzhao casually agreed, “Sure.”
Pei Daowan glanced at the time. “It’s getting late. Let’s take you home.”
Liu Qingyi smiled suggestively. “No need. My place isn’t far from here. I’ll just stroll back—it’ll help me digest.”
Knowing Liu Qingyi’s home was indeed nearby, Pei Daowan didn’t press further, simply reminding her to be careful on the way.
In an instant, the vast hall was empty save for the two of them. Yu Jinzhao’s heart began to race belatedly, and she barely dared to meet Pei Daowan’s gaze.
As Pei Daowan gathered her belongings, she casually asked, “When did you get the gift? I didn’t see you buy it.”
“Oh, I just happened to see a mall downstairs when I met Li Jin earlier today. Since I knew some of your friends would be at the banquet, I picked it up.”
Pei Daowan’s tone remained even. “How thoughtful of you.”
And I didn’t even bring a gift!
Yu Jinzhao remained completely oblivious to Pei Daowan’s unusual behavior, partly because Pei Daowan hid her feelings so well that they were nearly impossible to detect.
“I’m so happy tonight,” Yu Jinzhao said.
Pei Daowan raised an eyebrow. “Oh?”
Yu Jinzhao couldn’t help but grin foolishly. “It’s a secret. I won’t tell you.”
Tonight, Pei Daowan had taken her to a semi-private banquet, introduced her to her friends, and most importantly, publicly acknowledged her as her Alpha in front of everyone.
For the first time, Yu Jinzhao felt grateful for her Alpha status. If she weren’t an Alpha, would she have ever had the chance to meet Pei Daowan?
Pei Daowan smiled without comment, choosing not to expose her. She casually tossed her bag to Yu Jinzhao, ordering her to carry it without a hint of politeness. “Here, take this.”
Yu Jinzhao would have gladly taken on any task Pei Daowan assigned her, feeling not exploited but rather thrilled by the ‘reward’ of being useful.
If she weren’t a mature and composed adult, she would have been tempted to jump up and down on the spot to release her pent-up excitement.
Since Pei Daowan had been drinking, Yu Jinzhao drove them home. She didn’t turn on the air conditioning, instead rolling down the windows to let the river breeze rush into the car, bringing with it a liberating sense of freedom that defied order.
“Even if a thousand farewell songs fill the air tomorrow, drifting far along my path, even if a thousand evening stars outshine tonight’s moon, nothing can compare to the beauty of this moment…”
Yu Jinzhao hummed the tune involuntarily. Pei Daowan had never heard this song before, nor did she understand Cantonese, but she could sense Yu Jinzhao’s buoyant mood.
“What song is that?”
“It’s a very famous song from my hometown called ‘Thousand Thousand Farewell Songs.’ It’s incredibly beautiful. I’ll play the accompaniment and sing it for you sometime—it sounds amazing.”
Pei Daowan nodded, her thoughts drifting into the distance. She wondered what Yu Jinzhao had been like as a student and after graduation.
Would she have driven a girl around like this, singing her favorite songs? Or would she have taken her to a secluded spot to sketch her portrait?
Compared to Yu Jinzhao, Pei Daowan’s student days and professional life were unremarkable. Every day was a straight line, devoid of surprises or excitement.
As a student, she had focused solely on getting into the company early to take over her mother’s business as quickly as possible, leaving no time for extracurricular activities.
After graduation, she became entangled in worldly affairs, seemingly never taking the time to truly appreciate a sunset, admire a painting, or listen to a song.
Looking back, her life felt rigid and flavorless.
At this thought, Yu Jinzhao’s smile suddenly felt a bit jarring, though the emotion had no clear origin. Suppressing the urge to lash out, she stole glances at Yu Jinzhao.
Yu Jinzhao was in high spirits. This was only the second time she’d felt so excited since arriving here—the first being the night Pei Daowan promised to take her for barbecue.
It seemed every time she felt this happy, it was because of Pei Daowan.
Unable to resist showing off, Yu Jinzhao swerved, overtook cars, and drifted, her body unconsciously swaying to the rhythm of the song she was humming. Her driving was becoming a bit reckless.
“Drive carefully. Safety first,” Pei Daowan’s voice came from beside her, neither harsh nor accusatory, but rather a gentle reminder.
Yu Jinzhao immediately complied, her eyes curving into crescents like a well-trained dog, obedient and docile.
This gave Pei Daowan the illusion that whatever she said, Yu Jinzhao would listen—and keep listening…
