- Chapter 4 - Surprisingly, It's Actually Quite Interesting!
Seeing Pei Daowan’s skeptical expression, Yu Jinzhao hurriedly raised both hands in a gesture of reassurance. “Don’t worry, I’m absolutely not lying to you. You can do whatever you want, and I’ll do my best to compensate you.”
Pei Daowan scoffed but didn’t reply. The System, finally showing some sense, burrowed into Yu Jinzhao’s mind again before Pei Daowan could speak.
“There’s one more thing I didn’t tell you. Your marriage is a family alliance, with many complex implications. Divorce isn’t something you can easily pursue.”
Yu Jinzhao’s embarrassment deepened. She wished she could crawl into a crack in the floor and disappear. Clutching the quilt as if trying to escape, she stammered, “Um, I’m sorry, let’s not get divorced yet. That…”
Yu Jinzhao struggled to articulate her thoughts, her face flushed with awkwardness. She repeatedly vowed that she would never act as she had before.
Pei Daowan was fully aware of every exchange between Yu Jinzhao and the System, but at that moment, she felt a mischievous urge to tease her.
Her long eyelashes lowered, making her appear unexpectedly vulnerable. “Do you think I have no right to choose anymore? That I don’t even have the right to ask for a divorce?”
“I…”
Yu Jinzhao cursed her own clumsy tongue. She wasn’t usually at a loss for words; on the contrary, she could converse with ease, navigating social situations with grace.
But for some reason, when faced with Pei Daowan, she found herself tongue-tied, as if her language system had malfunctioned.
“I’m so sorry. My selfishness has caused you so much trouble. Of course you have every right—divorce is your fundamental right. Just give me some time, okay? Not now. Everything I said before was true. I won’t lie to you.”
Yu Jinzhao spoke with genuine sincerity, without a trace of pretense. Even though she was wearing the face Pei Daowan loathed most, she couldn’t bring herself to hate her.
The two were truly worlds apart. The former “Yu Jinzhao” would never have given anyone a second glance, let alone spoken such words or shown her any respect.
This Yu Jinzhao might genuinely be a good person, but what did that matter to her? She didn’t need saving; she needed revenge.
At this thought, Pei Daowan suddenly lost all interest in teasing. Everything felt so utterly pointless. Another round would simply lead to her sending everyone to prison again, only this time she could do it faster and more ruthlessly.
Yu Jinzhao was acutely sensitive to emotions. In that instant, she sensed Pei Daowan’s emotions vanish, replaced by an unfathomable emotional black hole. She couldn’t even discern whether it was good or bad.
Instinct told her she should do something, but she was paralyzed, unsure of what to do. She could only stare blankly at Pei Daowan.
Pei Daowan wasn’t offended. She merely thought, Yu Jinzhao may be a good person, but she’s not very clever.
“System! System! Are you there? I have a question for you.”
The System instinctively glanced at Pei Daowan, who nodded, signaling it could respond. Only then did the System speak.
“What is it? Why are you calling me?”
“You’ll help the female lead, right?”
Yu Jinzhao phrased her question cleverly, avoiding asking directly if the System would help her.
“Of course. Our very existence is to serve the female lead.”
“I need to know everything about this body—her friends, hobbies, assets—everything you know, tell me everything.”
“Right away!”
As soon as the System responded, Yu Jinzhao felt a flood of information surge into her mind. For a long moment, she struggled to process it all. When she finally looked up at Pei Daowan again, the guilt in her eyes was almost impossible to conceal.
Calling the original owner “inhuman” would be an understatement. Cruel, vicious, bullying, arrogant…
Pei Daowan was utterly innocent, yet she had been forcibly taken and exploited simply because of her beauty. Worse still, many of the original owner’s friends actually believed Pei Daowan was the one who had “climbed too high.” Birds of a feather, indeed.
Still dizzy, Yu Jinzhao hurriedly got out of bed and began rummaging through drawers and cabinets. This was the original owner’s bedroom; the bank cards should be here.
Soon, Yu Jinzhao found several bank cards and eagerly handed them to Pei Daowan.
“I’m truly sorry for what happened. You can use the money on these cards however you want, and there’s no way to trace them.”
Pei Daowan didn’t take the cards, her voice flat and emotionless. “Is this your compensation?”
“No, no, no! This isn’t compensation. This is what you deserve. It’s…”
Yu Jinzhao didn’t see this as compensation, because the harm she had caused Pei Daowan couldn’t be remedied with money. She felt immense guilt for empathizing with Pei Daowan’s suffering, and doing this would ease her conscience considerably.
Yu Jinzhao racked her brains, struggling to find a convincing reason to persuade her subordinates to accept these cards. After a long pause, a phrase finally came to her:
Wife-wife joint property!
Yes, that was it: wife-wife joint property.
“Wife-wife joint property?” Pei Daowan found the phrase almost comical, given Yu Jinzhao’s strained expression and the fact that this was the best she could come up with after so much thought.
“This is all the liquid, untraceable funds I have. You can use them freely, without needing anyone’s approval. This is my sincerity.”
Yu Jinzhao finally regained a semblance of her former negotiating prowess, though this time, her sincerity was genuine and absolute.
With that, she placed the cards on the table beside Pei Daowan without waiting for a response. “All the passwords are ******.”
Before Pei Daowan could react, a knock interrupted them.
“Miss!” It was the Butler’s voice.
Yu Jinzhao startled, instinctively turning to Pei Daowan for permission. “Should I let him in?”
“This is your house. Do as you please.”
Yu Jinzhao scratched her head awkwardly, secretly grateful to the butler for breaking the tense silence. If Pei Daowan had continued to refuse the bank cards, she wouldn’t have known what to do.
“Come in.”
“Miss, it’s almost mealtime. What would you like to eat?”
Yu Jinzhao wasn’t particularly hungry; she still felt lightheaded and had little appetite. She turned to Pei Daowan.
“Do you have any preferences?”
“No.”
Pei Daowan’s expression remained somewhat cold, as if unmoved by Yu Jinzhao’s two attempts at kindness.
Undeterred, Yu Jinzhao turned to the butler. “Don’t prepare my meal. Just make whatever she usually eats.”
The butler looked awkward. He didn’t know what Pei Daowan usually ate; he’d always prepared whatever Yu Jinzhao requested, never consulting Pei Daowan’s preferences.
Yu Jinzhao, quick to grasp the problem, grew serious. “She’s also a mistress of this house. From now on, her words carry the same weight as mine. You don’t need to ask my opinion—prioritize her wishes above all else.”
The butler looked somewhat resentful. Before this, he had been the sole authority in the house besides Yu Jinzhao. Though the marriage had lasted some time, the entire Yu Family knew how awkward Pei Daowan’s position was.
Even the master of the house didn’t respect her, and the servants treated her like a disposable dish, never acknowledging her as the other mistress of the room.
The Butler, emboldened by being personally selected by Yu Xincheng and having served the original owner for years, now carried himself with a hint of arrogance.
“Miss, there’s no need for such concern. She’s just an Omega. You shouldn’t bother with her opinions.”
“You don’t need to come tomorrow.”
Yu Jinzhao, still nursing a headache, had no patience for arguing with the Butler. This man had always indulged and manipulated the original owner, offering no positive influence whatsoever. This was the perfect opportunity to get rid of him.
The Butler’s shock was immediately visible. After all, he had been personally chosen by the master and had served the Yu Family for years. Now, with a single sentence, he was being dismissed over a newly arrived Omega.
Yu Jinzhao was already losing patience. She had always been a woman of clear goals. Having decided to help the female lead and strive to return home, she was determined to eliminate anyone who posed a threat to the female lead.
“What? Was I not clear enough? You can leave now.”
“Miss, are you really firing me over an Omega?”
The Butler’s expression was truly difficult to accept. After all, he was an old hand in the household, and now, at Yu Jinzhao’s mere word, he was being dismissed. His pride couldn’t take the blow.
“Miss, I serve the Master. You can’t do this.”
Yu Jinzhao burst into laughter. “Then go find your Master and ask him to back you up.”
The Butler fell silent. He knew full well the weight of a biological daughter versus an outsider, but he refused to give up, making one last desperate plea.
“Miss…”
A sharp edge appeared in Yu Jinzhao’s eyes, her voice rising several notches. “Now. Immediately. Get out of my house.”
Objectively speaking, Yu Jinzhao was far from unattractive. Her features were striking, radiating a bold, flamboyant beauty. As an Alpha, her figure was tall and commanding.
Pei Daowan had never truly noticed Yu Jinzhao’s appearance before. This was the first time she studied her features closely, and she was surprised to find them unexpectedly pleasing. It seemed a change of soul had indeed made a world of difference.
The Butler mumbled for a long moment before finally falling silent. He knew Yu Jinzhao’s temper well—an Alpha’s pride forbade any defiance. With his tail between his legs, he turned and slunk away.
This was truly unfair to Yu Jinzhao. After all, she had absolutely nothing to do with the original owner’s actions. But it didn’t matter; she had no obligation to explain herself to the butler.
After dismissing the butler, the atmosphere between the two women fell into an awkward silence. Pei Daowan remained completely expressionless throughout the entire exchange, offering no opinion or emotion. This made it impossible for Yu Jinzhao to gauge how she should approach her.
Yu Jinzhao had always been highly emotionally intelligent, which had earned her many friends and allowed her to navigate business situations with ease, effortlessly engaging with people from all walks of life.
Yet, when it came to Pei Daowan, she felt a delicate, untouchable quality. On one hand, she understood that Pei Daowan was the key to her returning home, and everything she did had to serve Pei Daowan’s interests.
On the other hand, she was still a person with genuine emotions. She couldn’t completely detach herself from her feelings when interacting with Pei Daowan, leading to a complex sense of guilt. This wasn’t just because of the original owner’s actions, but also because she was “using” Pei Daowan—being kind to her only to secure her own return home. This moral conflict stemmed from a sense of pity, the kind a healthy person might feel toward someone with a disability, leaving her with a lingering sense of guilt.
Neither the System nor Pei Daowan could fathom the turmoil in Yu Jinzhao’s heart. Pei Daowan, for her part, believed she needed no one’s pity. In her previous life, she had achieved her revenge even without Yu Jinzhao’s intervention.
As for the System, it had merely sifted through countless algorithms to identify a kind-hearted individual. By chance, Yu Jinzhao’s appearance most closely matched the original owner’s, leading to her selection.
Ultimately, Yu Jinzhao broke the silence. “Um, maybe you could ask the housekeeping department to send over a new butler when you have time? I don’t mean to make you do the work, but I’m worried you might not trust someone I hire. So, I’ll leave this to you.”
Pei Daowan nodded in agreement. Yu Jinzhao was right—even though she didn’t care about such matters, having control herself was the safest approach.
Moreover, as a member of high society, Yu Jinzhao had frequent social gatherings and banquets. Pei Daowan had no interest in managing these affairs herself. Hiring a butler would put everyone at ease.
“Also, you can replace anyone in this villa without consulting me. You have full authority to make those decisions.”
“Alright!”
For the first time, Pei Daowan smiled at Yu Jinzhao—not a sneer, nor the fake smile she wore around Yu Xincheng. The smile was faint, but Yu Jinzhao sensed that Pei Daowan was in a relatively good mood.
Yu Jinzhao relaxed her mind. Truth be told, she had been exhausted these past two days since transmigrating. She was human, not a god; anyone facing such a sudden upheaval would struggle to accept it, and she was no exception.
She had merely concealed her insecurity and fear of the unknown deep within her heart, but that didn’t mean they weren’t there. Now that she had relaxed, her exhaustion immediately became apparent, even to Pei Daowan.
“I’m sorry, I’m feeling a bit tired right now and want to rest for a while. If you need anything, just call me. If you want to go out, feel free to leave whenever you like. The car keys are by the entrance.”
The System had already informed her that nearly a month had passed since their marriage. Apart from essential social engagements, the original owner had never allowed Pei Daowan to leave the house, treating her like a gilded cage bird trapped in this massive, exquisite cage.
Thinking about this, Yu Jinzhao felt a pang of frustration. In truth, she too was trapped in a massive cage, her future shrouded in uncertainty and the unknown.
“Alright, I understand.”
Pei Daowan noticed Yu Jinzhao’s unusual demeanor, but she had no interest in probing further. Now that she was free to leave, she wanted to begin her plans as soon as possible. In her previous life, she had achieved her revenge, but at a terrible cost. This time, she intended to win without shedding a drop of bl00d.
The door closed, leaving Yu Jinzhao alone in the room. She curled up under the covers, feeling dejected. Her career had suffered a major setback, and she was at a loss for what to do, resorting to working overtime day after day in a desperate attempt to find a way to salvage the situation.
This unexpected turn of events had brought her to this world, and she couldn’t quite decide if it was a blessing or a curse. Perhaps helping Pei Daowan return to her own world might lead to a breakthrough after all.
Burdened by these thoughts, Yu Jinzhao drifted back to sleep.
