- Chapter 40 - Older Sister~ Good Older Sister~ Don't cry anymore.
Yu Jinzhao, having achieved her goal, was naturally overjoyed. The Hulatang, which she already found delicious, now tasted even more fragrant. She even felt like crossing her legs and whistling.
Unaware of Pei Daowan’s true feelings, Yu Jinzhao thoroughly enjoyed her breakfast. Afraid her smug expression might be too obvious, she even turned her back to hide it.
Pei Daowan had grown numb. She realized Yu Jinzhao was truly shameless—her apparent restraint was all a facade, masking a malicious and unruly nature.
Of course, Pei Daowan thought. Someone who can navigate crowds with such ease, charming everyone with effortless wit, could never be truly honest.
Imagining the bread before her was Yu Jinzhao, Pei Daowan stabbed it repeatedly with vicious force, leaving only tiny holes that did little to vent her anger.
“I’m not eating anymore. Let’s go see a doctor.”
Yu Jinzhao agreed instantly, showing none of her usual rebelliousness or shamelessness. Her face beamed with a smile as she casually stuffed the stabbed bread into her mouth, muttering, “Can’t waste food.”
The drive to the hospital was rather dull. Without Yu Jinzhao’s deliberate antics and teasing, Pei Daowan seemed unusually quiet.
She simply gazed out the window at the passing scenery, not uttering a word to Yu Jinzhao.
An awkward silence settled in the car. To avoid unnecessary contact with Yu Jinzhao, Pei Daowan had deliberately sat in the back, leaving Yu Jinzhao to drive alone.
It was strange. When Yu Jinzhao spoke, Pei Daowan had only wanted her to shut up. Now that she was silent, Pei Daowan found herself wishing for even the slightest sound.
The only sound in the car was the tires rolling against the road. The soundproofing was excellent; she couldn’t even hear the street noise outside.
Glancing up, she could see Yu Jinzhao’s calm, silent eyes in the rearview mirror. When Yu Jinzhao wasn’t looking at her, her gaze seemed sharp and stern. But the moment her eyes inadvertently met Pei Daowan’s reflection, they softened instantly.
This subtle shift eased something within Pei Daowan, prompting her to steal several more glances through the rearview mirror.
The car soon arrived at the hospital. Pei Daowan led the way with practiced ease, as if she had been there many times before.
Yu Jinzhao was unfamiliar with hospitals, rarely visiting them. She glanced at the signs every few steps to avoid getting lost.
Pei Daowan, however, navigated the hospital with ease, reaching the familiar department almost without looking at the signs.
Yu Jinzhao glanced up and saw the sign: “Alpha Gland Department.”
“You go in,” Pei Daowan said. “I’ll wait outside for you.”
Yu Jinzhao felt a strange sensation. Pei Daowan seemed to be treating her like a child, taking her to the doctor and waiting outside.
Noticing Yu Jinzhao’s dazed expression, Pei Daowan assumed she was nervous about the unfamiliar Alpha anatomy and reassured her, “It’s just a checkup of your gland. Nothing serious.”
Carrying this peculiar feeling, Yu Jinzhao entered the examination room. Outside, Pei Daowan was far more anxious than she let on.
She regretted her initial harshness, wondering if it had caused any lasting damage. She should have brought Yu Jinzhao to the doctor immediately instead of delaying until now.
After what seemed like an eternity, Yu Jinzhao finally emerged. Pei Daowan rushed forward, her expression betraying a hint of urgency.
“How is it?”
More than her own condition, Yu Jinzhao was focused on Pei Daowan’s expression. She cares about me!
Yu Jinzhao downplayed the situation. “It’s hard to tell right now. I need to get some tests done.”
“Okay, I’ll come with you.”
Oh no, she’s treating me like a child again! Yu Jinzhao couldn’t help but bite her tongue.
“It’s fine, it’s just upstairs. You can rest here, I’ll be back in a bit.”
Yu Jinzhao’s determined expression left Pei Daowan no choice but to relent.
As Yu Jinzhao’s retreating figure gradually blurred and disappeared, Pei Daowan turned and knocked on the clinic door.
When Yu Jinzhao returned, Pei Daowan was still sitting in the same spot, legs neatly together and hands clasped in her lap.
Yu Jinzhao sensed a feeling of obedient docility in her posture. She’s been waiting for me here. How wonderful!
Smiling warmly, Yu Jinzhao greeted her. “I’m back.”
Pei Daowan glanced up, a flicker of unnaturalness in her eyes. Avoiding Yu Jinzhao’s gaze, she urged her, “Go see the doctor quickly.”
“Mm, it’s nothing to worry about.”
This time, Pei Daowan followed closely behind her.
She watched the doctor rattle off a long explanation while holding Yu Jinzhao’s medical report.
To be honest, Yu Jinzhao didn’t understand much of it. Something about the gland being damaged and regrowing, potentially causing pheromone imbalances or even loss of control, and the possibility of a secondary differentiation. The situation didn’t sound very optimistic.
But Yu Jinzhao wasn’t too concerned. Partly because she had no real understanding of glands or the severity of what the doctor was saying.
More importantly, she noticed Pei Daowan’s expression growing increasingly serious because of her, eventually revealing a hint of intimidating ferocity.
She felt her “fetish” being triggered. She wasn’t a masochist, but she absolutely loved seeing Pei Daowan make that face, especially when it was only for her.
That aura, combined with Pei Daowan’s striking features, was just too “sisterly,” instantly hooking Yu Jinzhao’s unchanging aesthetic preferences.
She’s actually kind of cool, Yu Jinzhao thought, feeling utterly captivated.
Pei Daowan had no idea what Yu Jinzhao was thinking. If she knew Yu Jinzhao’s mind was currently occupied with such nonsensical thoughts, she would have been tempted to knock her on the head.
At that moment, Pei Daowan’s mood was heavy. Her gland’s condition was genuinely concerning. When she had initially drugged that beast, her intention had been to cripple him. But who could have foreseen Yu Jinzhao’s arrival?
Yu Jinzhao’s arrival alone would have been manageable, but it had triggered a secondary differentiation of her gland. However, due to the excessive dosage of the drug, significant latent risks remained.
As her gland underwent secondary differentiation, it might become increasingly uncontrollable. Mild cases could result in heat cycle irregularities, while severe cases could lead to gland damage, causing severe harm to her body.
Slowly exhaling a breath of stale air, Pei Daowan glared at Yu Jinzhao’s nonchalant demeanor, her anger rising uncontrollably. She couldn’t tell if she was angrier at herself or at Yu Jinzhao.
Suddenly, tears welled up, catching even Pei Daowan off guard. She didn’t realize she was crying until she saw her own reflection in Yu Jinzhao’s panicked eyes.
It was then that she realized, with a dazed shock, that she was actually crying. How many years had it been since she last shed a tear?
Seeing Pei Daowan cry, Yu Jinzhao immediately panicked. Even on that night, when she had treated Pei Daowan so cruelly, the woman hadn’t cried like this.
“I’m sorry…”
Yu Jinzhao wiped away the tears with her fingers, but more welled up, overflowing before she could catch them. She could only apologize frantically.
“Yu Jinzhao, you really are a bastard.”
“I am a bastard. Don’t cry, Pei Daowan. You shouldn’t waste your tears on me.”
More tears streamed down, dripping between Yu Jinzhao’s fingers, burning her heart with their heat.
She pulled Pei Daowan into a tight embrace, using her lapel as a makeshift tissue and letting her rest against her shoulder.
“It’s okay, it’s okay. I’m fine, see? Everything will be alright…”
“Older Sister~ Good Older Sister~ Don’t cry…”
Pei Daowan felt deeply embarrassed. After all these years, she had lost her composure in front of Yu Jinzhao. More than that, she was shocked that she could cry in such a situation.
The doctor awkwardly retreated to a corner. If this weren’t his clinic, he would have fled the room.
Pei Daowan quickly regained her composure. Though the tear tracks at the corners of her eyes lingered, her expression had already settled into calm.
Too embarrassed to speak, she decided to talk to the doctor herself.
Fortunately, the condition had been caught early. The problem wasn’t severe; conservative treatment was sufficient for now. This involved adjusting her pheromone release levels and scheduling regular check-ups.
Relieved by the diagnosis, Pei Daowan visibly relaxed. Overwhelmed by embarrassment, she grabbed Yu Jinzhao and practically ran away.
On the way back, Pei Daowan shoved Yu Jinzhao into the passenger seat and drove herself, ignoring her companion.
Yu Jinzhao felt her soul drifting. Her peripheral vision caught Pei Daowan’s profile, intensifying the surreal sensation.
She didn’t want to gloat, as it would make her seem petty, but she was genuinely thrilled. Pei Daowan cared about her more than she had imagined.
Pei Daowan drove straight to the office. She had been swamped lately with miscellaneous tasks: selecting a location for the new company, hiring staff, and managing project investments.
The time she had taken to bring Yu Jinzhao to the doctor was hard-earned, the result of several days of overtime.
Arriving at the office, Pei Daowan didn’t want Yu Jinzhao to come upstairs. She still felt embarrassed and didn’t want to face her.
“We’re here. Take a taxi home.”
Yu Jinzhao glanced at the time. It was almost noon. She didn’t want to part ways with Pei Daowan yet.
“I’m a little hungry. Let’s grab lunch together before I go up.”
After a moment’s hesitation, Pei Daowan agreed. After all, Yu Jinzhao was the patient, and her wishes came first.
“What do you want to eat?”
“What’s around here? I want to try something you usually enjoy.”
Pei Daowan pursed her lips. She didn’t have any particular favorites; when she was busy, Qingyi often brought her meals. She honestly didn’t know what was good around here.
Seeing Pei Daowan’s hesitant expression, Yu Jinzhao smiled knowingly. She knew this girl paid absolutely no attention to the food options nearby.
Whether it was during her school days or later at work, Yu Jinzhao always scouted out the nearby restaurants first. On weekends, she’d gather with classmates or friends for a good meal.
“Hmph, hmph, hmph! Then let’s trust our luck. Based on my years of experience, that place looks promising.”
Pei Daowan followed her gaze to a ramen shop. The decor was simple and unremarkable.
As lunchtime approached, the place was already packed. From the outside, not a single empty seat was visible.
Pei Daowan couldn’t help but wonder if Yu Jinzhao was judging the place based solely on the crowd.
Though skeptical, Pei Daowan found a parking spot and accompanied Yu Jinzhao inside.
Since the restaurant was so close to their office, Pei Daowan couldn’t help but worry about running into colleagues.
The meal proceeded peacefully. Yu Jinzhao had good taste; the food was indeed quite good. In public settings, she always maintained impeccable social grace, avoiding any deliberate tantrums or childish behavior.
Ha! She’s using her social maneuvering skills from the business world against me.
If Yu Jinzhao could have read Pei Daowan’s thoughts, she would have cried out in protest. She knew how to behave differently in public versus at home.
She feared Pei Daowan might lose her temper and beat her in front of others. Of course, there was another reason she was too embarrassed to admit.
In public, Pei Daowan was truly intimidating. Her entire aura radiated “strangers keep out,” and her gaze carried a hint of menace.
This left Yu Jinzhao utterly subdued, too intimidated to misbehave. Pei Daowan’s sheer presence instantly made her behave.
