- Chapter 6 - That... Do You Want a Bowl Too?
“How dare you…”
Pei Fangming, stunned by the blow, finally reacted and lunged forward with his fists raised. Two Alphas who had long resented him immediately swarmed him, restrained him, and dragged him out the door.
Pei Daowan flexed her wrist slightly. She had used a bit too much force, making her hand ache. Next time, she should let someone else handle it.
For some reason, she suddenly thought of Yu Jinzhao. Based on her current observations, Yu Jinzhao seemed genuinely good-hearted—moral, responsible, and empathetic. Yet these virtuous qualities could become weapons against herself when dealing with scum. She had learned this the hard way in her previous life, and she wouldn’t let history repeat itself.
After dealing with Pei Fangming, Pei Daowan turned to face the crowd and settled into the central chair—the one she usually occupied. Resting her chin in her hand, she surveyed the room.
Excellent. Half the faces were unfamiliar, and those she had once favored were either absent or relegated to the edges of the room, clearly excluded from management.
Pei Yuanwu felt awkward, unsure whether to sit or stand. He had been sitting in the chair before Pei Daowan took it.
This was a blatant slap in the face, but he wasn’t as shameless as Pei Fangming. Besides, Pei Daowan still held the company’s true power; he only had proxy authority. He wiped his brow to hide his embarrassment.
“I’ve returned with no ulterior motives. I plan to transfer all my responsibilities and authority as Executive Vice President.”
Her words left everyone suspicious, unsure if this was mere courtesy or genuine intent. After all, she had shown no mercy when striking Pei Fangming earlier.
“President Pei! The company can’t function without you!” Liu Qingyi genuinely didn’t want Pei Daowan to leave. Partly for her own sake, but also because the company had descended into chaos under the father-son duo’s mismanagement. If she hadn’t already devoted years to the company, she would have resigned long ago.
Hearing Pei Daowan’s intention to leave extinguished her last glimmer of hope.
Pei Daowan cut off her next words. “As you all know, I’m married now. It’s no longer appropriate for me to remain at the company.”
Hearing this, Pei Yuanwu breathed a sigh of relief. Good, she’s not here to cause trouble, he thought, deciding not to make an issue of her taking his seat.
Liu Qingyi’s eyes rimmed with red. Why? Why must a married woman sacrifice her career for her family? Pei Daowan’s capabilities are no less than those of any so-called Alpha.
How else could she have expanded the company’s scale so rapidly in just a few years, elevating it to the ranks of Jiang City’s rising stars? It was precisely this success that caught the eye of Miss Yu, the eldest daughter of the Yu Family, at a banquet, leading to Pei Daowan’s loss of freedom. If this is the outcome, then it would have been better not to develop at all.
“Sister…”
Liu Qingyi had been personally mentored by Pei Daowan, shielded from the industry’s unspoken rules and power plays. Pei Daowan had protected her fiercely, allowing her to focus solely on her work.
After that, Liu Qingyi stopped listening to Pei Daowan’s words. She stormed out of the conference room, fearing she would lose control and do something rash if she stayed any longer.
Why do Alphas get to reap the rewards without lifting a finger? Why do they act with such self-righteousness? Why can’t they be the ones to sacrifice, instead of forcing someone as brilliant as Pei Daowan to give up everything?
A series of footsteps interrupted Liu Qingyi’s thoughts. She instinctively turned her head to find Pei Daowan standing behind her.
“Sister…” Liu Qingyi murmured, her face still streaked with sorrow, anger, and helplessness.
Pei Daowan could easily guess what the younger woman was thinking, even without looking at her expression. Liu Qingyi had been one of the few people from her previous life who had stayed by her side until the very end.
“Why are you hiding here crying all alone?”
“I’m not crying!” Liu Qingyi instinctively denied, but the thick nasal tone in her voice betrayed her.
“Even you think I’m doomed if I marry Yu Jinzhao?”
“No! No!” Liu Qingyi vehemently protested, afraid she would be misunderstood if she hesitated.
“I never thought you’d be doomed by marrying her! It’s Yu Jinzhao’s honor to marry you. I’m just angry that such a beautiful flower is being stuck in cow dung. Yu Jinzhao doesn’t deserve you.”
Hearing this, Pei Daowan couldn’t help but chuckle. She suddenly realized that Yu Jinzhao was actually quite attractive. Marrying her might not be such a bad deal after all.
She deliberately teased, “Yu Jinzhao is quite attractive, her family is incredibly wealthy, and she’s the Yu Family’s only Alpha heir. By any measure, it seems I wouldn’t be losing out.”
“That’s not true at all. I know what you truly want isn’t any of those things.”
Hearing this, Pei Daowan’s gaze deepened, becoming slightly intimidating from the side. Yet Liu Qingyi showed no fear, meeting her eyes directly.
“Though I don’t know exactly what you desire, I know it’s definitely not these superficial things. Sometimes I can’t help but wonder, if we weren’t Omegas, wouldn’t there be so many more possibilities?”
“Identity has nothing to do with it. If you want something, strive for it. On the contrary, being an Omega is no disadvantage compared to being an Alpha. You must leverage your inherent strengths.”
Liu Qingyi looked at her, confused and uncertain. Pei Daowan felt a pang of frustration. The Liu Qingyi before her hadn’t yet grown into the capable woman she remembered. Back then, Liu Qingyi had already been able to stand on her own two feet. These words might be too much for her to grasp right now.
“In short, don’t cry over spilled milk. What’s done is done. Face it with composure.”
After a moment’s pause, Pei Daowan decided to say a few good words about Yu Jinzhao. After all, the Yu Jinzhao of today was a completely different person from the one she used to know.
“Besides, Yu Jinzhao isn’t as bad as the rumors make her out to be. Look, I’m perfectly fine, aren’t I?”
“But I heard…”
Pei Daowan cut her off. “You said it yourself—you only heard rumors. You haven’t actually met the real Yu Jinzhao, so don’t jump to conclusions.”
Hearing this, Liu Qingyi felt a pang of jealousy. It was rare for Pei Daowan to speak so favorably of someone, especially a notorious playboy like Yu Jinzhao.
“As fellow Omegas, I understand your concerns. But competition isn’t exclusive to Alphas. Omegas can compete too. Never let your secondary gender define you.”
Liu Qingyi looked thoughtful, understanding that Pei Daowan hadn’t lost much through her marriage. Seeing her today, she was still the same familiar figure.
“Alright, enough about that. I wanted to extend an olive branch. Would you consider leaving the Pei Group and joining me?”
“Yu Jinzhao won’t be involved, will she?”
Pei Daowan found it somewhat amusing. Just how terrible is Yu Jinzhao’s reputation? she wondered, that a young woman who’s never even met her would react with such aversion?
“Neither the Pei Family nor the Yu Family will be involved,” Pei Daowan assured her.
Liu Qingyi was flattered and surprised. She had been working under Pei Daowan since graduation, and over the years, she had relied on her guidance and support countless times.
Without asking about the task or the compensation, Liu Qingyi simply agreed.
Pei Daowan smiled gently. Those who stood by me in my previous life will naturally be well-provided for in this one.
“It might take some time—a month at the shortest, three months at the longest.”
The exact duration would depend on Yu Jinzhao’s effectiveness. After all, Yu Xincheng was a true old fox who would never tolerate his Omega daughter being exposed to the public eye.
“Understood. No matter how long it takes, I’ll wait.”
Pei Daowan nodded, then glanced at the sky. It was nearly time to return home.
At that moment, she subconsciously dismissed the real reason she needed to go back. After all, the current Yu Jinzhao wouldn’t restrict her freedom.
After finishing up some minor tasks at the Pei Group, Pei Daowan arrived home late in the evening. Since she hadn’t yet hired a new butler, the entrance hall felt cold and empty, devoid of any presence.
Pei Daowan set down her keys, straightened her coat, changed her shoes, and instinctively scanned the surroundings, but Yu Jinzhao was nowhere to be seen.
Hasn’t she woken up yet?
The drug was potent. In her previous life, Pei Daowan had suffered greatly from its effects, leaving her with severe lingering consequences. This time, she had preemptively injected Yu Jinzhao with the drug.
Poor Yu Jinzhao, she thought. She was completely unaware and became a scapegoat. Yet Pei Daowan felt no remorse. Being alone in a room with an Alpha, even a kind one, was dangerous. Few could resist the allure of heat. Better to disable her entirely.
Despite these thoughts, Pei Daowan still planned to knock on the bedroom door to check on Yu Jinzhao. After all, Yu Jinzhao was the Yu Family’s only Alpha. If anything happened to her, Yu Xincheng would be the first to blame Pei Daowan.
Before she could ascend the stairs, she passed the kitchen and heard sounds coming from within. Pei Daowan instinctively stopped.
Just then, the kitchen door opened, and Yu Jinzhao emerged carrying a bowl of noodles. When she saw Pei Daowan, Yu Jinzhao looked flustered, as if she’d been caught sneaking a snack.
“I was a little hungry, so I thought I’d make something to eat,” Yu Jinzhao said apologetically. “I’m sorry, I didn’t know you were coming back. I only made one bowl.”
Pei Daowan found the situation somewhat amusing. They had barely exchanged a few words, yet Yu Jinzhao had already apologized countless times. This is her house, Pei Daowan thought. Why is she acting more reserved than I am?
Remembering the image the System had crafted of her for Yu Jinzhao, Pei Daowan subconsciously softened her demeanor, losing the domineering aura she usually carried at work.
“It’s alright. I was thoughtless not to hire a butler sooner. You must be starving.”
Yu Jinzhao had indeed been starving. It had been nearly three days since she’d collapsed after being drugged and taken to the hospital. During her stay, she’d only received intravenous fluids. After returning home, she’d slept continuously, not eating a single thing.
Hearing Pei Daowan’s words, Yu Jinzhao’s initial embarrassment quickly turned to shame. She felt like a tyrannical tyrant, capable of making the female lead feel guilty over such a trivial matter.
“No, no, it’s not your fault at all! You have no obligation to take care of me. I have hands and feet—I can cook for myself when I’m hungry. See? I’ve already made something.”
“Mm.”
Pei Daowan kept her head slightly bowed, making it impossible to tell if she had truly heard Yu Jinzhao’s words.
Having changed out of her high heels into house slippers, Pei Daowan now stood a bit shorter than Yu Jinzhao. With her head lowered, shadows cast across her eyes, obscuring her expression.
Yu Jinzhao stammered, trying to break the awkward silence, “Um, have you eaten? Would you like a bowl too?”
