- Chapter 7 - Naked, hazy, intoxicated, wisps of smoke...
Pei Daowan instinctively wanted to refuse, but the savory aroma of clear broth noodles wafted from the bowl, causing the words on her lips to freeze. She hadn’t eaten all day, and Yu Jinzhao’s offering had unexpectedly stirred her appetite.
There was another reason too. When she looked at Yu Jinzhao, she miraculously sensed a faint, cautious, and subtly expectant look in her eyes. Pei Daowan couldn’t bring herself to refuse.
Seeing Pei Daowan’s hesitation, Yu Jinzhao suddenly realized this was a perfect opportunity to improve their rapport. Without another word, she placed the bowl on the table.
“Eat this first. It’s no trouble at all—I’ll be quick.”
With that, she turned and reentered the kitchen, closing the door behind her to block Pei Daowan’s view as she began preparing another bowl for herself.
Pei Daowan gazed at the noodles with a pensive expression. It was a simple, homely dish, but the fried egg was remarkably well-cooked, its shape perfectly round. This couldn’t be her first time making it.
Suddenly, Pei Daowan felt a flicker of curiosity about Yu Jinzhao’s past. What had she done before coming here?
“Tell me, what did Yu Jinzhao do before?”
The System was flattered, as its Host rarely asked it anything proactively, usually ignoring it altogether. It immediately spilled all of Yu Jinzhao’s secrets like a bag of beans.
“Yu Jinzhao was an exemplary student from childhood, sailing smoothly through school all the way to university. Though her family wasn’t wealthy, they were comfortably middle-class.”
“She studied business administration and, after graduating, first worked as a management trainee at a renowned listed company before starting her own business. Her personal capabilities are quite impressive.”
“And then?”
Seeing its Host’s rare spark of curiosity, the System eagerly recounted everything it knew about Yu Jinzhao until the kitchen door slid open again, interrupting their conversation.
Yu Jinzhao’s eyes immediately fell on the bowl of noodles, still untouched in the exact spot where she had left it. A wave of embarrassment washed over her, making her want to crawl into a crack in the floor.
Pei Daowan was equally startled. She hadn’t expected Yu Jinzhao to return so quickly, nor had she anticipated listening to the System’s lengthy explanation without interrupting.
“Sorry, I was lost in thought just now. I’ll eat now.”
Before Yu Jinzhao, Pei Daowan felt the urge to flee for the first time. She couldn’t meet Yu Jinzhao’s gaze, suddenly afraid that her own hidden emotions might vanish.
She grabbed the bowl of noodles faster than Yu Jinzhao and turned to leave without even a word of thanks. She attributed this momentary lapse in composure to the fact that “Yu Jinzhao is genuinely a good person.”
She didn’t want to hurt a good person.
Watching Pei Daowan leave with the noodles, Yu Jinzhao remained motionless for a long moment before letting out a long sigh.
Her mission was to help Pei Daowan overthrow the Yu Family, establish her own career, and experience the beauty of the human world.
In essence, it was a rescue narrative, but the mindset of “saving” someone felt arrogant, like a superior showing pity for an inferior.
Yu Jinzhao shook her head, banishing such inappropriate thoughts. She began eating the noodles she had just cooked, watching the stars gradually emerge outside the window.
After finishing her meal, Yu Jinzhao was about to wash the dishes when Pei Daowan returned with her empty bowl. The noodles had been eaten clean, leaving only a little broth.
In an instant, Yu Jinzhao felt her mood lift considerably. The uncertainty about the future and the subtle anxieties she’d been harboring were temporarily suppressed.
A faint smile curved her lips, and her voice carried a hint of excitement as she said, “Leave the bowls here. I’ll take care of them.”
Pei Daowan gently shook her head. After all, Yu Jinzhao had already cooked the meal; it felt unfair to make her wash the dishes too.
She had reflected on her behavior earlier that afternoon. She wasn’t the same person she used to be. Though seeing Yu Jinzhao’s long face still inevitably brought back memories of the past, she…
Her thoughts were interrupted. Yu Jinzhao had already taken the bowl with a smile, and Pei Daowan realized she had unconsciously released her grip.
“It’s no problem,” Yu Jinzhao said. “I haven’t cleaned the kitchen yet anyway. It’ll be quick.”
Seeing Yu Jinzhao’s firm resolve, Pei Daowan didn’t insist further. She murmured a soft thank you and turned to leave.
Yu Jinzhao’s spirits soared. She could sense that Pei Daowan’s mood wasn’t too bad—much calmer than when she had first seen her. This was a good sign. If she took things slowly, she could eventually overcome the negative impression left by the original owner of this body.
Back in the bedroom, Pei Daowan suddenly grew pensive. She addressed the System: “Continue! You mentioned Yu Jinzhao had someone she liked in college?”
“Oh, you mean that? Well, it wasn’t really ‘liking’ her. That girl was Yu Jinzhao’s junior, and they only interacted during the opening ceremony. They became friends afterward, but Yu Jinzhao graduated and moved to a different city, so they lost touch.”
Pei Daowan sneered. “And this is what you call ‘liking’ someone?”
The System felt wronged. I never said she liked her! You’re the one who said that! But it didn’t dare voice its thoughts, so it remained meek and submissive.
“Continue!”
Another hour passed. By now, the System had exhausted its knowledge. Any finer details would only be known to Yu Jinzhao herself.
The System felt a smug satisfaction. Yu Jinzhao seemed to have no significant flaws; her two mothers had raised her exceptionally well.
“See, Host? I told you Yu Jinzhao’s character is absolutely trustworthy. You can use her with complete confidence. She’s the only one I picked out of thousands!”
“Shut up!”
For some reason, Pei Daowan’s voice suddenly turned cold. She had been listening with mild interest earlier, but now her expression was icy and severe. The System, chastened, fell silent.
Yu Jinzhao had been lying in bed for a long time, unable to fall asleep. Perhaps she had slept too much during the day, or perhaps she simply wasn’t tired. She tossed and turned, her mind clear and alert, with not a trace of drowsiness.
Pei Daowan’s room was right next door. The original owner’s house was a small villa, with the living room, dining room, garage, and butler’s quarters on the first floor, and the owner’s living quarters on the second floor.
Yu Jinzhao was sleeping in the master bedroom, a vast space that made her feel utterly empty. She had never slept in such a large room before, especially not while trapped in this so-called “book,” which only deepened her sense of isolation.
Pei Daowan was sleeping in the adjacent secondary bedroom, which, despite its name, was still quite spacious, only slightly smaller than the master suite.
Yu Jinzhao couldn’t help but wonder if Pei Daowan was already asleep.
The System had only told her that her mission was to help Pei Daowan, but it hadn’t revealed what Pei Daowan truly wanted. Pei Daowan herself remained guarded and wary of Yu Jinzhao.
Yu Jinzhao hadn’t drawn the curtains, and the soft moonlight streamed into the room, casting an unspoken, ambiguous glow. She sighed softly, glanced at the time—it was already two in the morning.
She rummaged through the original owner’s phone, which resembled the old-fashioned flip phones from her previous world. It lacked any entertainment apps or engaging features. Yu Jinzhao scoured every corner of the device, finding nothing useful beyond the contacts list and a few text messages.
Since she couldn’t sleep anyway, Yu Jinzhao threw on a robe and got up. She decided to look at the moon, curious to see how this world’s moon differed from the one she knew.
As she stepped onto the balcony, she caught a faint whiff of cigarette smoke mingled with a cool, floral fragrance—a scent reminiscent of the one she’d detected before collapsing the other day.
The aroma was subtle, like fresh snow covering flower branches. The scent of snow and the fragrance of blossoms intertwined, rising in a delicate steam as the sunlight emerged, permeating Yu Jinzhao’s senses.
Instinctively, Yu Jinzhao turned her head. Sure enough, on the adjacent balcony, she spotted a familiar figure.
The balconies of the master and guest bedrooms were connected, separated only by an openwork screen. Bathed in moonlight, the figure’s silhouette was hazy, yet Yu Jinzhao could still discern its full form.
Pei Daowan stood with her back to the moon, her features obscured in shadow. One slender hand rested on the sofa, a crimson glow flickering between her long, elegant fingers.
Drawn by the crimson glow, Yu Jinzhao involuntarily looked up. The pale, bluish smoke further blurred the woman’s features, making it difficult to see clearly.
Yu Jinzhao noticed her slightly curled lashes and downcast eyes, unfocused and drifting into the empty space. For some reason, Yu Jinzhao sensed an inexplicable aura of decadent allure.
She had seen others smoke before, both men and women. During her early days of entrepreneurship, she had met many people, including attractive men and women, and had witnessed them smoking. Yet none had ever captivated her gaze like this.
Reason told her that smoking was a bad habit, but emotion now held sway. The woman’s red lips pressed against the cigarette, her slender figure outlined by her clothes, revealing a large expanse of porcelain-white skin at her neck.
Exposed, hazy, intoxicated, and shrouded in blue smoke—it was like a richly colored oil painting.
Yu Jinzhao’s breath caught in her throat. Only belatedly did she realize how rude she was being. Not only was she an Alpha in this world and the other woman an Omega, but she had always been drawn to women.
Like her two mothers, she naturally felt a deep affinity for women. She was drawn to the intricate, hidden, and complex emotions that intertwined love and hatred between them.
She had no reservations about women peering into the depths of her soul. Yet, at this moment, she suddenly felt a strong urge to retreat, ashamed to expose her innermost self. She couldn’t help but take a step back.
Her movement startled Pei Daowan, who instinctively turned her head and met Yu Jinzhao’s flustered gaze.
Pei Daowan frowned instinctively. She hadn’t expected Yu Jinzhao to still be awake at this hour, let alone to have caught her in the act.
The moment Pei Daowan’s eyes met hers, Yu Jinzhao felt the dreamlike haze dissipate completely. A pang of regret washed over her—she had disturbed Pei Daowan’s tranquility.
“I’m sorry… I couldn’t sleep and just wanted to look at the moon. I didn’t mean to bother you.”
Pei Daowan’s frown deepened. Why did this woman always apologize the moment she spoke? Couldn’t she say anything else?
Sensing Pei Daowan’s resistance, Yu Jinzhao grew even more uneasy. Her cheeks flushed, realizing she seemed to always be intruding on her.
Seeing Pei Daowan stirred subtle, elusive emotions within Yu Jinzhao, emotions she struggled to process. Unlike her interactions with friends or family, where Yu Jinzhao could be remarkably considerate and warm, like a gentle spring breeze, her emotional intelligence seemed to vanish in Pei Daowan’s presence. Beyond apologizing, she genuinely didn’t know what to say, attributing these complex feelings to Pei Daowan being her mission target—it was only natural to develop such complicated thoughts.
“The moon is brightest on the sixteenth night, not the fifteenth. You can continue watching tomorrow,” Pei Daowan said, extinguishing her cigarette. The crimson ember plunged abruptly, extinguishing all lingering warmth, as she turned and retreated into her room.
Yu Jinzhao heard the click of the door lock followed by the soft rustle of curtains. Within moments, silence returned, leaving only the full moon outside the window and Yu Jinzhao alone, as if everything that had just transpired had been an illusion.
A faint sigh escaped Yu Jinzhao’s lips. Suddenly losing her interest in moon-gazing, she turned and returned to her room, leaving the curtains undrawn and the balcony door ajar. She drifted off to sleep bathed in the moonlight.
