- Chapter 8 - Long Hair Pulled to One Side, Secured with Just One...
For days, Yu Jinzhao and Pei Daowan barely saw each other, despite sharing the same roof. Pei Daowan was perpetually busy, working from dawn till dusk, sometimes not even returning home at night. Yu Jinzhao rarely crossed paths with her.
Compared to Pei Daowan’s relentless schedule, Yu Jinzhao lived the life of a leisurely idler. She slept until she naturally woke up, then went to the market to buy groceries and cook meals. In the afternoons, she might take a stroll outside or simply stay home.
The butler still hadn’t been hired, and Pei Daowan seemed to have forgotten about it, never mentioning it again. The night after their conversation, Yu Jinzhao gazed at the moon again, and it was indeed rounder and brighter, just as Pei Daowan had said.
Yet Yu Jinzhao watched with a sense of disappointment. The moon was beautiful, but it felt too distant, belonging to another realm entirely.
Her half-month honeymoon was coming to an end, with only tomorrow remaining. Once it was over, she would have to start working for the so-called Yu Clan. She didn’t mind working, but her heart was filled with uncertainty.
At that moment, she sat on the sofa in the living room, occasionally getting up to check the time and pacing back and forth, her anxiety palpable.
She had been waiting for Pei Daowan to return for nearly three days.
A few days earlier, Yu Xincheng had called her, telling her to bring Pei Daowan to the old mansion for a meal on the last day of their honeymoon, and to introduce her to some people while they were there.
Yu Jinzhao instinctively wanted to refuse, but Yu Xincheng gave her no chance, his tone laced with veiled warnings.
“I don’t approve of Omegas flaunting themselves, especially one who has married into the Yu Family. If you can’t control her, I’ll do it for you.”
His words were blunt and condescending, but Yu Jinzhao had no leverage to refuse. Everything she possessed had been given to her by the Yu Family. Though she didn’t value it, her position still served a purpose, and she couldn’t afford to lose it. Without it, she wouldn’t know how to help Pei Daowan.
She had to return. This world wasn’t hers; she felt no sense of belonging. So, she needed to maintain her Yu Jinzhao identity.
But…
She didn’t know if she could wait for Pei Daowan today. Tomorrow was the last day.
She wanted to contact Pei Daowan, but after searching through her phone, she couldn’t find her contact information. She didn’t know where else to look. Calling out to the System yielded no response, only deepening her anxiety.
With a heart full of trepidation, Yu Jinzhao waited until evening. She had accomplished nothing all day. If Pei Daowan didn’t arrive, she would have to go to the old mansion alone tomorrow.
There was also a secret she couldn’t bring herself to voice: she was afraid. Not of Yu Xincheng, but of the unknown.
In this world, Pei Daowan was her only ally. She had come here because of her, yet after days of no progress, Yu Jinzhao couldn’t help but grow anxious.
In the past, she had always approached tasks methodically, unraveling each thread with meticulous care. Few things ever escaped her control, which is why she had always been the “model child” others envied—she could always arrange everything with perfect order.
But since arriving here, everything had slipped beyond her grasp. In this unfamiliar world, she had to smooth away her sharp edges, groping her way forward step by step. Pei Daowan was her only source of confidence.
Just as Yu Jinzhao was about to doze off, the sound of the hall key turning exploded in her ears like a thunderclap.
She sat bolt upright, her body tense, her gaze fixed on the door.
Creak!
The sound was faint, yet Yu Jinzhao held her breath, afraid of disturbing something.
Only when the person behind the door slowly revealed their full figure did Yu Jinzhao subtly exhale in relief, her entire body relaxing.
Pei Daowan hadn’t expected Yu Jinzhao to be in the living room, staring directly at her. She’d assumed Yu Jinzhao wouldn’t be home at this hour, as she hadn’t been there when Pei Daowan had returned at this time before.
“Um… you’re back.”
Pei Daowan placed her keys and bag on the entryway table, nodding in acknowledgment of Yu Jinzhao’s words.
As she changed her shoes, she noticed Yu Jinzhao still staring intently at her. Pei Daowan felt a faint sense of unease; Yu Jinzhao rarely looked at her like this.
“Is something wrong?”
“A few days ago, Yu Xin… Father called me. He wants us to visit the old family estate tomorrow.”
The word “Father” sounded so strained, someone overhearing might think Yu Jinzhao was being strangled as she spoke.
Pei Daowan nodded to show she understood. After all, this was also why she had returned home.
Yu Xincheng hadn’t just called Yu Jinzhao; he’d called Pei Daowan as well. That old fox deserves to die, she thought. Even though I’ve been so careful, he still managed to sniff out a hint of something. He’s so persistent.
Yu Jinzhao paused for a moment, then suddenly said, “Actually, it’s fine if we don’t go. I can just say…”
“It’s fine. I should head back anyway. Coincidentally, I don’t have anything planned for tomorrow either.”
Pei Daowan seemed indifferent to the idea of visiting the old mansion, accepting it with remarkable composure. This left Yu Jinzhao feeling rather uneasy.
She wanted to say something, but lacking any legitimate reason or standing, she could only awkwardly ask, “Have you eaten yet?”
At this, Pei Daowan seemed to smile faintly, so fleetingly that Yu Jinzhao almost thought it was her imagination.
“I just got back. Not yet.”
Yu Jinzhao suddenly felt a surge of happiness and couldn’t resist taking a step forward. “Then let me cook for you. What would you like?”
The words were out before she could stop herself, and Yu Jinzhao immediately regretted her impulsiveness. She had forgotten the impression the original owner had left on Pei Daowan, who had no idea the person before her was now someone else entirely. This was far too forward.
“What are you good at making?”
Just as Yu Jinzhao was about to retreat in embarrassment, Pei Daowan spoke, her tone subtly probing. Her lashes fluttered lightly, her gaze now serious, a stark contrast to the hazy, intoxicated look from the previous night.
“I can handle stir-fries and things like that,” Yu Jinzhao replied with a soft smile, a hint of anticipation in her eyes.
“Then let’s have stir-fry.”
“Any dietary restrictions?”
“I don’t like strong flavors, especially spicy food.”
“Me too,” Yu Jinzhao replied.
With that, she turned and fled to the kitchen as if escaping, her voice still carrying from afar: “Rest for a bit. It shouldn’t take more than an hour.”
Pei Daowan remained motionless, neither returning to her room nor moving from the sofa. The kitchen was well-insulated, allowing only faint sounds to penetrate. Pei Daowan couldn’t discern what Yu Jinzhao was doing, her expression thoughtful.
“What has Yu Jinzhao been doing these past few days?”
“Reporting to Host, Yu Jinzhao has done nothing of note. Sometimes she sleeps until she wakes naturally, other times she goes for early morning runs, always stopping by the market before returning to cook. In the afternoons, she occasionally goes out, but mostly stays home reading or napping.”
From this description, this Yu Jinzhao seemed remarkably low-maintenance.
“Oh, and during this time, Yu Jinzhao’s former friend asked her to go out, but she declined, choosing to stay home instead.”
“Former friend?”
Realizing its mistake, the System quickly corrected itself: “I meant the former Yu Jinzhao’s friend, Jiang Jie.”
The mention of Jiang Jie instantly chilled Pei Daowan’s gaze. She had almost forgotten about that scumbag. The two Alphas, united by their shared depravity, had exploited their physiological advantages to commit countless atrocities.
Even Yu Jinzhao herself hadn’t noticed that she had gradually separated the current Yu Jinzhao from her former self. Now, when she called out “Yu Jinzhao,” she was referring only to the present Yu Jinzhao.
After entering the kitchen, Yu Jinzhao hesitated, unsure of what to make. After all, she didn’t know what Pei Daowan liked to eat.
She opened the refrigerator, gazing at the freshly bought ingredients. Should she choose pork or beef?
“The female lead prefers beef,” the System suddenly spoke up after a long silence. Yu Jinzhao froze, startled, before realizing it was the System’s voice. She hadn’t heard it in nearly half a month.
“I’ve called for you many times before. Why haven’t you ever appeared?”
The System’s core tightened. That’s because I’m not your Host, it thought. Its current access to Yu Jinzhao’s mind was only granted by Pei Daowan’s permission; otherwise, it wouldn’t dare enter.
Just as the System was about to brush off the question with a vague excuse, it received instructions from Pei Daowan. It immediately replied according to her instructions:
“Because both of us exist solely for the sake of the female lead. I can only manifest when I’m near her; otherwise, I can’t appear.”
“So that’s how it is.”
Yu Jinzhao didn’t doubt the System’s explanation. After all, she had no choice but to trust it now.
As she cooked, Yu Jinzhao chatted casually with the System, not asking where Pei Daowan had been these past few days or how exactly she was supposed to complete her mission. Instead, she inquired about seemingly trivial details, like Pei Daowan’s likes and dislikes.
By the time their conversation trailed off, Yu Jinzhao had already finished cooking and brought out the dishes. Pei Daowan glanced at the time—just over half an hour. Impressively quick, she thought. Yu Jinzhao must have cooked a lot in the past.
“It’s flavored eggplant and tomato beef stew,” Yu Jinzhao announced, secretly observing Pei Daowan’s expression. Being slightly taller, she could clearly see the faint upward curve of Pei Daowan’s lips. Looks like the System was actually reliable after all.
Fortunately, the System couldn’t read Yu Jinzhao’s thoughts. Otherwise, it would have broken out in a cold sweat. Every word it had spoken had been carefully coached by Pei Daowan, and it hadn’t dared to deviate from the script.
“Go wash your hands and let’s eat.”
“Okay.”
Pei Daowan exuded a gentle aura, draped in an ankle-length raven-blue dress. Her long hair was swept to one side, loosely held in place by a simple, unadorned claw clip, lending her an air of serene elegance, like a pristine spring orchid.
For some inexplicable reason, Yu Jinzhao felt her cheeks flush. She averted her gaze, afraid to linger on the sight. Such a delicate creature should be cherished, not sullied by the world’s harsh realities!
Once again, she felt a surge of contempt for the original owner of this body. Aside from her decent taste in aesthetics, the woman had been utterly worthless.
Yu Jinzhao knew she had always been drawn to women, admiring their resilience and cherishing their tenderness. Now, a protective instinct rose within her. This beauty shouldn’t be tainted by anyone. This wasn’t about romantic love; it was about the fundamental duty to safeguard something exquisite.
Taking a deep breath, Yu Jinzhao used the moment while Pei Daowan went to wash her hands to compose herself. She wasn’t the original owner, nor was she this world’s Alpha. She suppressed the inappropriate thoughts that had surfaced.
Beautiful things shouldn’t be possessed; they should bloom, allowing everyone to witness their splendor. Her role was simply to fulfill her own responsibilities.
