- Chapter 9 - Pei Daowan's Brow Furrows, Showing Displeasure...
Pei Daowan frowned slightly, a flicker of displeasure crossing her face.
Yet, during the meal, Yu Jinzhao couldn’t resist stealing glances at Pei Daowan. The reason was simple: Yu Jinzhao found Pei Daowan’s manner of eating utterly captivating.
Pei Daowan didn’t savor each bite slowly, nor did she eat quickly. In fact, she finished her meal slightly faster than Yu Jinzhao. Yet her movements were remarkably graceful and pleasing to the eye.
Unable to find a suitable comparison, Yu Jinzhao recalled watching spiders feeding on nature documentaries. While comparing Pei Daowan to a spider felt inappropriate, upon closer observation, she realized that spiders truly eat with remarkable elegance. They proceed calmly, methodically, with everything under control.
First, they immobilize their prey with silk, then paralyze it with venom. Finally, they bring the prey to their mouths and consume its fluids, leaving behind only an empty husk. The entire process is swift and precise.
Unlike other predators that tear at their food, leaving a messy scene, spiders never display impatience or greed when faced with prey.
At that moment, Pei Daowan resembled a spider—her movements were swift yet exuded an effortless grace. In contrast, Yu Jinzhao tended to eat rather hastily, a habit she knew was unbecoming. Having received strict upbringing since childhood, she rarely displayed this behavior in public, reserving it for moments when she was alone.
Even when eating, Yu Jinzhao maintained a refined appearance. Anyone watching her would remark on her impeccable manners. Yet she knew this wasn’t her true self; it was a cultivated facade, deliberately slowed down with each meal.
For her, elegance required deliberate slowness. But now, she felt like she had discovered a new continent. Eating at a quicker pace didn’t necessarily look unseemly; instead, it felt natural, as if this was how it should be.
Noticing Yu Jinzhao’s occasional furtive glances, Pei Daowan found herself amused. Why is she being so cautious, like a hamster? Is she full just from watching me eat?!
It was fortunate the System couldn’t read their thoughts at that moment. Otherwise, it would have sighed, You two really have a knack for metaphors. It’s just a meal! One’s being compared to a spider, the other to a hamster.
“I’m finished eating,” Pei Daowan said, slightly ahead of Yu Jinzhao. She fixed her gaze steadily on Yu Jinzhao, who couldn’t help but feel her cheeks flush again.
“Then you should rest. I’ll take care of the dishes later.”
Rest after eating? Are you feeding me like a pig?!
“It’s fine. You finish eating first. I want to discuss something with you afterward.”
This was the first time Pei Daowan had used the word “discuss,” instantly raising Yu Jinzhao’s anticipation. Abandoning all pretense of elegance, Yu Jinzhao wolfed down the remaining food in a few bites and hurried to wash the dishes.
Soon, Yu Jinzhao had tidied everything up and sat stiffly across from Pei Daowan, watching her quietly.
“Do we need to prepare anything for the trip back tomorrow?”
So that’s what she wanted to talk about. For some reason, Yu Jinzhao felt a fleeting pang of disappointment when she heard the topic, though she couldn’t quite explain why.
“Nothing at all. Just our presence will suffice.”
Logically, as the younger generation, Yu Jinzhao should bring some gifts. However, she harbored no affection for Yu Xincheng and, by extension, the rest of the Yu Family—a case of “hating the crow for its nest.” Naturally, she had no desire to bring anything.
“Alright, then I won’t bring anything.”
Pei Daowan didn’t dwell on the matter. After all, she hadn’t really wanted to bring anything in the first place; her offer had been merely a symbolic gesture of politeness.
Glancing at the time, she saw it was just past seven—still early, perfect for a stroll. She extended an invitation:
“I need to buy some clothes. Would you like to come with me?”
Hearing this, Yu Jinzhao’s earlier disappointment vanished instantly. She looked up, meeting Pei Daowan’s gaze with complete sincerity. Pei Daowan couldn’t detect any hidden motives in her eyes.
“Really?” Yu Jinzhao stammered, caught off guard. She hadn’t expected Pei Daowan to invite her, especially since shopping trips felt like such personal outings. While she could manage with someone she wasn’t close to, it would inevitably feel awkward.
In contrast to Yu Jinzhao’s excitement, Pei Daowan remained composed. “Yes, I need to pick up a few things.”
“Great! Should we go now?”
“Mm, let’s go.”
With that, Pei Daowan led the way to the entryway, preparing to put on her coat. Yu Jinzhao’s eyes sparkled with delight as she followed closely behind, her steps light and eager.
As they reached the garage downstairs, Yu Jinzhao instinctively opened the passenger door, intending to let Pei Daowan get in first. Pei Daowan didn’t hesitate and slid into the seat.
Yu Jinzhao fastened her seatbelt, started the engine, and smoothly drove the car out of the garage. Pei Daowan observed her with a calm, unwavering gaze.
Her driving skills were polished, her movements fluid, and she handled the luxury car with effortless composure, showing no hint of unfamiliarity. It was clear that this Yu Jinzhao, in her own world, was someone of considerable wealth and status.
“Where do you want to go shopping?” Yu Jinzhao asked, turning her head after buckling up.
Pei Daowan paused, considering her options before deferring to Yu Jinzhao. “You decide. Anywhere is fine.”
Yu Jinzhao was slightly surprised. The female lead was being unusually agreeable tonight, a stark contrast to the capricious and calculating character described in the original novel.
“I went to a mall near the neighborhood a few days ago. They have a pretty good selection of everything. Let’s go there.”
Pei Daowan nodded lightly in acknowledgment, then turned to gaze out the window, offering no further conversation.
She was reflecting on the past few days. Although everything had started anew, that didn’t erase the injustices and grievances she had suffered before.
Another matter troubling her was Yu Jinzhao. She wasn’t sure how to handle Yu Jinzhao. Though she had initially intended to use her, seeing Yu Jinzhao as a living, breathing person had stirred other feelings within her.
Unlike Yu Xincheng, she still retained some semblance of conscience and moral boundaries.
During Pei Daowan’s reverie, the car had already come to a smooth stop in the underground mall. The slight jolt of the car’s halt snapped her back to reality.
Pei Daowan lowered her lashes, composed herself, and opened the car door first, stepping out without waiting for Yu Jinzhao.
After parking the car securely, Yu Jinzhao hurried after Pei Daowan, her expression light and cheerful, occasionally glancing at Pei Daowan with a faint smile.
Since they had already eaten, they didn’t hesitate and headed straight for their destination.
Pei Daowan likely came to the mall simply to find a dress for tomorrow’s banquet. Though Yu Xincheng was repulsive, she had other people she needed to see at the event.
She quickly spotted a dress she liked. Without consulting anyone, she told the sales clerk she’d take it, paid, and completed the purchase with seamless efficiency, leaving no room for hesitation.
Yu Jinzhao didn’t miss the sales clerk’s sidelong glances, whether intentional or not. After all, anyone could see they had entered together—an Alpha and an Omega—and their striking appearances made them stand out.
Yet the two seemed barely acquainted, exchanging few words. The Omega acted as if she didn’t know Yu Jinzhao at all, paying separately, while the Alpha showed no particular warmth.
Yu Jinzhao paid little attention to the clerk’s gaze. Her attention was now drawn to a wine-red evening gown.
The skirt cascaded in layered waves, its deep, muted crimson deepening to an almost ink-stained hem, exuding an understated luxury.
Although Pei Daowan hadn’t tried on the dress, Yu Jinzhao’s intuition told her it would look stunning on her.
Thinking this, Yu Jinzhao’s eyes sparkled with delight as she said cheerfully, “I think that wine-red gown is beautiful too.”
Hearing this, Pei Daowan didn’t turn around or even glance at the red dress. She simply replied coolly, “I don’t like it.”
In truth, Pei Daowan had noticed the red dress the moment she entered the store. It was undeniably eye-catching and beautiful, but…
She found it too beautiful. When something excessively beautiful appears before people, its inherent familiarity can be overlooked.
Wearing that red dress would make her undeniably stunning and draw all eyes, but even without it, she could still captivate hearts and souls.
Yu Jinzhao showed no surprise at the rejection. She simply thought the dress was beautiful but didn’t quite suit her own style; otherwise, she would have bought it for herself.
“Then let’s look at something else?”
“There’s no need. I’ve already chosen what I want.”
Pei Daowan clearly had no interest in further browsing. Her purpose was clear: having found suitable clothes, there was no point in wasting time.
“Alright!”
Yu Jinzhao didn’t press the matter, resigned to playing the role of chauffeur. The drive back was silent, and they didn’t even exchange goodnights before retreating to their respective rooms.
Just the previous evening, the atmosphere at dinner had been quite pleasant.
The next morning, Yu Jinzhao set off early for the old mansion, driving at a leisurely pace. Even after leaving the city, she kept her speed around 40 kilometers per hour. The reason was simple: she wasn’t familiar with the route. Before leaving, she had meticulously studied the GPS navigation several times, repeatedly checking to ensure she wouldn’t make any wrong turns.
The mansion’s architectural style surprised Yu Jinzhao. It wasn’t the modern, minimalist villa she had imagined, but rather a quaint, classical Western-style house with a distinctive charm, and surprisingly modest grounds.
Yu Jinzhao wasn’t one to glean much information from her surroundings, but even she felt a sense of incongruity.
How could someone like Yu Xincheng possibly fit into this quaint little house?
With no time for further musing, Yu Jinzhao took a deep breath and parked the car.
“We’re here,” she announced.
Compared to Yu Jinzhao’s forced composure, Pei Daowan remained remarkably calm. This wasn’t her first encounter with Yu Xincheng. She knew all too well the old fox’s cunning tactics.
While others might use a combination of soft and hard tactics, Yu Jinzhao employed a strategy of smiling while concealing a dagger, simultaneously pursuing ruthless extermination.
As Pei Daowan drifted into thought, a pair of hands linked arms with her. In the early summer heat, neither woman wore thick clothing, and their skin inevitably brushed against each other.
Pei Daowan unconsciously frowned at the contact, but she didn’t pull away, merely enduring it with a stiff posture.
Yu Jinzhao, her entire focus fixed on Pei Daowan, naturally didn’t miss this subtle reaction. She couldn’t help but feel awkward, her voice turning dry.
“I’m sorry for putting you through this.”
Pei Daowan knew this wasn’t the time for petty displays of temper. In fact, the moment after her frown, her expression smoothed into its usual composure, even softening with a gentle smile.
Combined with the apricot-white dress she had deliberately chosen the night before, anyone who saw her would inevitably sigh, “What a perfect homemaker Omega!”
Pei Daowan returned the gesture, linking her arm through Yu Jinzhao’s forearm. She walked half a step behind Yu Jinzhao, but whether intentionally or not, Yu Jinzhao’s pace adjusted perfectly, keeping them aligned side by side.
As expected, Yu Xincheng sat regally in the head seat, not even raising an eyebrow when the two women entered.
As Yu Jinzhao led Pei Daowan into the room, the others instinctively wanted to offer polite greetings. After all, Yu Jinzhao was Yu Xincheng’s only Alpha heir, and to put it bluntly, after a century, the Yu Family would be hers to command.
Before anyone could rise, Yu Xincheng let out a deliberate cough. Though barely audible in the vast living room, every movement in the room froze for a moment.
Yu Jinzhao smiled silently. This was a power play, a way to put her in her place. Her recent behavior had been markedly different from before, especially after her marriage, as if she had suddenly grown wings.
Publicly humiliated, Yu Jinzhao showed no sign of noticing. She calmly helped Pei Daowan sit down, then nodded slightly to Yu Xincheng at the head of the table, acknowledging proper etiquette.
Though Yu Jinzhao was Yu Xincheng’s only Alpha heir, her seat was positioned far from his, more like that of a distant relative than a daughter.
In contrast, flanking Yu Xincheng were two nephews from a branch family, both Alphas but only A-Grade.
Pei Daowan, now playing the role of a dutiful wife, nodded politely to Yu Xincheng and took her seat beside Yu Jinzhao.
