Whoever Falls in Love First is the Dog - Chapter 47
Chapter 47
“If I had never found out, I would’ve been grateful to you for the rest of my life. But now, I just feel like a dish… one that turned up a fly at the bottom.”
“Shen Mengke, do you want it?”
Chen Yanxing suddenly stopped walking and looked up to ask her.
Shen Mengke couldn’t help but let out a soft humph. She took a deep breath, reached out to grab Chen Yanxing’s hair, and said between gasps, “Chen Yanxing… you’re terrible…”
Chen Yanxing chuckled lightly and leaned in to kiss her, a deep, lingering kiss, damp and passionate.
In that cramped little space, in such a simple setting, Chen Yanxing brought Shen Mengke to climax.
Her breath hitched and wouldn’t steady. With teary eyes, she looked at Chen Yanxing—anger and frustration mixed with the residual heat of desire, making the atmosphere even more charged.
Just as Chen Yanxing had said, Shen Mengke did sleep well.
By the time she opened her eyes again, it was already dusk.
The curtains in the bedroom were thick, completely blocking the light from outside.
Shen Mengke got out of bed and walked to the window. When she pulled the curtain open and saw the scene outside, so different from the morning, she felt momentarily dazed.
The sun had already dipped below the horizon, but a faint afterglow still lit a corner of the sky—like an overturned jar of paint. Even after the heavy colors were wiped away, the paper still retained some pigment.
Gradually, even that bit of color faded. Inside and outside the room, darkness settled.
Her eyes began to sting slightly. She turned away and was instantly plunged into pitch black. She stretched her hand forward, blindly walking a few steps until she adjusted to the darkness, which was even deeper than outside.
She groped along the wall and turned on the light. The sudden brightness made her instinctively shut her eyes, needing a moment to readjust.
Her phone rang just then. Shen Mengke walked over and picked it up from the bedside, only then realizing—the double bed was much larger than the one she had at home.
She looked around. This wasn’t her room.
Her memory rushed back—the argument last night, the sunrise this morning, and… what happened in the car.
She subconsciously gripped her phone tighter, accidentally pressing a button and hanging up the call.
The room fell silent. Looking around at the lavish furnishings, Shen Mengke felt unsettled.
She wasn’t stupid. All that stuff about Xingchen and Ren Zhou—this was clearly a place Chen Yanxing had arranged for her. But after what happened with Shu Yun, she really didn’t want to accept favors from others anymore. The debt was too hard to repay.
Barely a few seconds passed before the phone rang again. It was Chen Yanxing.
Shen Mengke answered. Her voice filled the room. “You’re awake?”
“Mm.”
“I figured you’d be up around now. You’ve been sleeping for ten hours.”
Shen Mengke glanced at the time. 8 p.m. She frowned slightly. She wanted to argue, but honestly, she couldn’t even remember when she fell asleep.
“What do you want?” she asked.
“Nothing. I just didn’t want you sleeping too long and no one around to check on you.”
Shen Mengke clicked her tongue, about to retort, when Chen Yanxing added, “I’m at the hospital right now, so I can’t come over. Do you want something to eat? I can have someone bring it to you.”
“Why are you at the hospital?”
“Uh… my mom. She had leg surgery today.”
“Oh. No need to send food. I’ll go out and eat.”
“Where? I’ll have someone pick you up.”
Hearing this, Shen Mengke laughed. “So this is what it’s like after you’ve been formally acknowledged by your biological family, huh? Pretty generous, Miss Xia?”
Chen Yanxing went silent for a second. Shen Mengke imagined her frowning and burst out laughing. “No need to pick me up. I’m not a kid. I won’t die without you.”
“Alright. Just be careful. The password is your birthday.”
Shen Mengke paused before realizing she meant the front door password.
“Oh. I’m hanging up.”
“Okay.”
Why was Chen Yanxing being so good to her?
Shen Mengke couldn’t figure it out. Nor did she want to. On the couch in the bedroom, she spotted several shopping bags—new clothes. Probably prepared by Chen Yanxing.
After a quick shower and change of clothes, she headed out.
Taxis weren’t allowed into this neighborhood, so she walked to the gate. Sure enough, there was a taxi waiting outside.
“To Huayuan.”
She was going back to pack. Accepting help from Chen Yanxing was still better than owing Shu Yun—especially since things between them had soured.
It was time to settle all the unresolved matters from the past.
But to her surprise, as soon as she opened the door, light from the living room spilled out onto her.
Still wearing her shoes, Shen Mengke stepped straight in—and saw Shu Yun sitting in the living room.
“So it was you,” she said.
Shu Yun raised an eyebrow. “You guessed?”
“The lights were on. No one else would walk in here so casually.”
She didn’t hold back at all, but Shu Yun merely smiled without replying.
She watched as Shen Mengke walked upstairs, following behind.
“Where were you last night? I saw you leave with that person.”
“Went stargazing.”
But there hadn’t been any stars at all last night.
Shu Yun stopped at the foot of the stairs, looking up at Shen Mengke’s back.
She was already so far away that Shu Yun had to crane her neck to see her clearly.
She stood there silently for a moment, then followed her upstairs. When she entered the room, she saw Shen Mengke packing her suitcase.
She frowned. “What are you doing?”
“Giving the house back to you.”
Shen Mengke didn’t stop moving as she spoke. She folded her clothes and packed them piece by piece.
Shu Yun couldn’t hold back and grabbed her hand to stop her.
“Does it really have to end like this between us?”
Shen Mengke looked up and said, “Sis, I’m grateful for everything you’ve done for me, but I also hate the lies and the way you treated me. We both know deep down—JING wouldn’t have treated me that way without your say-so.”
“If I had never known, I would’ve thanked you for life. But now? I feel like a dish that turned up a fly at the end. Disgusting.”
With that, she flung Shu Yun’s hand away and continued packing.
Shu Yun stood there, watching as Shen Mengke walked past her again and again without even glancing at her. Her lips trembled, eyes reddening, her face pale.
Her heart suddenly skipped a beat. Her bl00d surged, but she couldn’t seem to take in enough air.
Shu Yun abruptly sat on the bed, bending over, clutching her chest.
It felt like her heart was wrapped in nerves being twisted tighter and tighter—painful, unbearable.
Shen Mengke’s figure blurred before her eyes. She instinctively reached out, only to graze the edge of her clothing. She couldn’t even get her name out before everything went black—Shu Yun fainted.
But she heard Shen Mengke’s panicked voice—calling her “sis.”
Shen Mengke was terrified. She had never seen Shu Yun like this—pale as a ghost, drenched in sweat, her brow furrowed in agony.
Her first instinct was to call Chen Yanxing, but just as the call connected, she hung up and called 120 instead.
Shen Mengke didn’t finish packing. She rode in the ambulance with Shu Yun. Chen Yanxing’s call came again.
She had no idea how many times Chen Yanxing had called. But amid all the chaos of the emergency, she hadn’t picked up.
Chen Yanxing was also getting anxious. Shen Mengke had called but hung up immediately, and then stopped answering. Naturally, she feared the worst.
So she asked Shen Jingli to keep an eye on Xia Lingxuan, who was still in surgery, and rushed out to find Shen Mengke.
Just as she got in the car, another call finally connected. Shen Mengke quickly explained the situation, and at the mention of Shu Yun, Chen Yanxing frowned.
“Don’t worry. I’m on my way,” she said.
They arrived at the hospital almost at the same time. Chen Yanxing saw Shu Yun being wheeled off the ambulance—and Shen Mengke standing by, looking completely lost. She rushed forward.
As soon as she wrapped her arm around Shen Mengke, the girl visibly flinched before turning around. Seeing it was Chen Yanxing, she let out a long breath.
“I’ve already contacted Shu Yun’s parents. They should be here soon. But for now, we need to stay with her,” Shen Mengke said, looking toward Shu Yun.
They followed her into the emergency room, then were called away to handle payment.
Chen Yanxing didn’t let Shen Mengke do anything. She told her to wait outside the ER and ran around for her instead.
Shu Yun’s parents arrived soon after. Shen Mengke had only met them once, back in college—famous figures in Jiangcheng. She remembered seeing them at a lecture.
Back then, they were in their thirties—confident, accomplished, full of life. But now, they looked older—worn down.
Shen Mengke had a feeling it was because of Shu Yun, now lying in the ER.
Once a young rising star, Shu Yun had to give up her future when illness struck at her peak. She went abroad for treatment, and it had already been six years. Her parents must’ve gone through a lot.
Shen Mengke sighed inwardly, but when the couple approached, she stepped forward. “Uncle, Auntie, I’m Shen Mengke.”
Madam Shu looked at her, dazed. “It’s been a long time. You’ve changed so much.”
Shen Mengke was startled. “You still remember me?”
She nodded but clearly wasn’t in the mood to chat. Her gaze fixed on the glowing ER sign. “How’s Yun’er?”
Shen Mengke shook her head. “I don’t know. She suddenly collapsed. I…”
Just then, Chen Yanxing returned. Catching Shen Mengke’s helpless expression, she quickly walked over and took her hand. She whispered, “It’s not your fault.”
It’s not your fault…
Shen Mengke looked up at the closed ER doors. But only she knew—Shu Yun had collapsed because of her.
She knew about Shu Yun’s condition. She had steeled herself to say those harsh words. She only wanted to sever the past cleanly. But she had never meant to hurt her.
Just like she said before—she was grateful. Immensely grateful for all Shu Yun had done for her.
She wanted Shu Yun to be happy, safe, and well.
