Chapter 50: “You Have a Girlfriend—Miss Chen’s Girl? Who Would Dare Touch You?”
Shen Mengke stayed at the hospital with Shu Yun until the afternoon after lunch, only leaving once it was getting late. As soon as she walked out of the hospital, she received a call from Xu Shinian.
Shen Mengke hesitated. She really didn’t want to answer.
She knew she and Xu Shinian weren’t on the same wavelength. They never really clicked.
But then, Xu Shinian bombarded her with a bunch of photos. Unable to resist, Shen Mengke clicked them open—and immediately, her hands trembled.
The photos were of no one else but her idol, Yuan Yushan.
There were nearly ten photos in total. Yuan Yushan was captured from all angles—chatting, clinking glasses, looking down at her phone, and even smiling directly at the camera.
Those eyes, looking straight through the lens, made Shen Mengke’s heart race uncontrollably.
Just as the call was about to time out, Shen Mengke finally picked up.
Before she could even speak, lively background music came through the phone—it sounded like a party.
“Mengke, did you see the photos? I wasn’t lying, I really got Yuan Yushan to come. I sent you the address. Come over!”
“Ah, I…” She had actually promised to go see Chen Yanxing’s mom with her tonight.
But before she could even make a decision, Xu Shinian let out a displeased tsk. Shen Mengke heard someone talking on the other end before Xu Shinian continued, “Didn’t you always dream of meeting Yuan Yushan? This is your chance. And it’s all industry people—remember Ava? She’s here too. She wrote a new song and is planning the MV. I highly recommended you to her.”
“Don’t hesitate. Yuan Yushan’s got a big name—it wasn’t easy getting her to come. She might leave soon and then you’ll miss your shot.”
Xu Shinian’s words were hard to refuse.
“I sent you the address. Hurry up.”
After hanging up, Shen Mengke sighed, sent a message to Chen Yanxing, and took a cab to the address Xu Shinian provided.
It was a villa in the suburbs. Shen Mengke saw luxury cars parked outside and heard deafening music before she even stepped inside.
Once she identified herself, the doorman led her in.
It was a large outdoor party—pool, BBQ, beer. The moment Shen Mengke stepped in, she was dazzled by the colorful streamers waving in the air.
Xu Shinian soon came out to greet her. “Mengke!”
She seemed genuinely happy, jogging over. “That was quick. Have you eaten?”
Shen Mengke shook her head—she had planned to eat with Chen Yanxing.
“I figured you hadn’t. Come on in.” Xu Shinian pulled her inside.
The indoor scene was just as wild—singing, dancing, drinking… a full-blown party. Shen Mengke was overwhelmed. Other than the backstage of some awards shows, she had never seen so many industry people in a private setting.
“Come, I’ll introduce you to Yuan Yushan,” Xu Shinian whispered. “She’s got a big ego and it took so much effort to get her here. How will you thank me?”
As they walked deeper into the house, Shen Mengke smiled. “Xu-jie, even if I wanted to thank you, what could I offer you?”
Xu Shinian was richer, more famous—this industry was brutally realistic. Relationships were built on either money or resources. Shen Mengke had neither.
Xu Shinian winked. “Then… how about offering yourself?”
Shen Mengke was startled, staring at her in shock. “Xu-jie, you…”
Xu Shinian burst out laughing. “Just kidding! I know you have a girlfriend. Miss Chen’s woman? Who’d dare make a move on you? Let’s go.”
For some reason, Shen Mengke felt a bit uncomfortable hearing that.
Miss Chen’s girlfriend. In the end, she still relied on Chen Yanxing.
“Yuan-jie!”
Shen Mengke quickly spotted Yuan Yushan, who was talking to someone.
Xu Shinian called out, then pulled Shen Mengke over. “Yuan-jie, here she is.”
Suddenly meeting her idol face-to-face, Shen Mengke’s heart nearly leapt out of her chest. Yuan Yushan was even more stunning in person, and she smiled warmly as she extended a hand.
“Shen Mengke, right? Shinian’s been going on about you—says you’re a big fan of mine?”
Shen Mengke nodded eagerly, taking her hand. “Yes! I really admire you.”
Yuan Yushan smiled. “With such a pretty fan, I’m the lucky one. Let’s add each other on WeChat?”
Yuan Yushan offered to exchange WeChat—Shen Mengke was too excited to speak. It felt like she was seventeen again, watching classmates obsess over idols, never understanding why. Now she had become one of them.
As she pulled out her phone, she noticed a message from Chen Yanxing—just remembering she had messaged her earlier outside the hospital, but hadn’t gotten a reply.
Still, with Yuan Yushan in front of her, she instinctively ignored Chen Yanxing and happily added her idol.
“Yuan-jie, Mengke hasn’t eaten yet—let’s eat and chat?” Xu Shinian winked at her.
Shen Mengke gave her a grateful smile. Yuan Yushan nodded. “No wonder Shinian said she was waiting for someone to eat with. It was you.”
“Let’s go upstairs.”
The three headed upstairs. Inside, Shen Jingli and Ava were already tipsy. When they entered, both looked up in surprise.
Ava composed herself, lowering her feet from the chair. Shen Jingli squinted at Shen Mengke.
“Mengke, Ava specifically asked for you to star in her new MV. Right, Ava?”
“Ah… oh, yes! Yes!” Ava stumbled forward. “I thought you were perfect for my new song when I saw you last time. But Shinian said you’ve been busy, so I didn’t reach out.”
Shen Mengke glanced between Ava and Xu Shinian and smiled. “You’re too kind. I was worried you forgot about me.”
“Not at all! I’ll come find you later, okay? Don’t turn me down.”
“Of course not.”
Dinner was uneasy for Shen Mengke. She couldn’t understand why she was dining with these four: a rich heiress, a top actress, a genius songwriter, and the mysterious Shen Jingli. They didn’t seem like people from her world. Shen Jingli kept giving her ambiguous looks.
As the evening progressed, more alcohol flowed. Shen Mengke tried to refuse at first, but when Yuan Yushan offered her a drink, she couldn’t say no—soon, she was drinking more and more.
Eventually, the five at the table scattered. Yuan Yushan brought her downstairs alone, offering a small cake. “Here, to sober you up.”
Shen Mengke took it, smiling. “Thanks.”
Yuan Yushan leaned on the table, grinning. “You hold your liquor well.”
“It’s okay.”
“I’m gonna smoke. Want to walk with me?”
Surprised, Shen Mengke hadn’t expected someone like Yuan Yushan to smoke.
Still, she nodded. “Sure.”
She put down her cake.
Shen Mengke didn’t know who organized this party, but the crowd was growing—and not all were from the industry. Unfamiliar brand names popped up everywhere. Maybe it was the pounding music or the alcohol kicking in, but her head felt fuzzy, her thoughts sluggish.
Even outside, she didn’t feel much better.
They strolled through a small wooded area behind the villa. Yuan Yushan expertly lit a cigarette, took a drag, and exhaled smoke before turning to Shen Mengke. “Want one?”
Shen Mengke quickly shook her head. “I don’t smoke.”
Yuan Yushan smiled, leaning against a tree as the cigarette burned shorter with every puff.
Strangely, Shen Mengke found this side of Yuan Yushan incredibly alluring—a unique, womanly charm.
“Do you have a girlfriend?” Yuan Yushan asked suddenly.
“Ah…” Shen Mengke blinked, confused. She didn’t think Yuan Yushan paid attention to her personal life—otherwise Xu Shinian wouldn’t have had to introduce them.
Yuan Yushan chuckled. “Everyone Shinian invites likes girls. Everyone you met today.”
Shen Mengke didn’t know whether to be shocked or relieved. She could barely find one lesbian in her daily life—where did all these women come from?
“Do you?” Yuan Yushan asked again.
Shen Mengke shook her head. “No.”
Yuan Yushan smiled and chatted with her about acting, work, hobbies…
Shen Mengke grew more animated—this was a once-in-a-lifetime chance to chat with her idol so closely.
When the cigarette was nearly done, the conversation ended. Yuan Yushan tossed the butt on the ground, crushed it out with her foot, then picked it up and threw it in a bin. “Shall we head back?”
“Mm.”
Some things you’ve never seen are just beyond your world. When Shen Mengke saw Yuan Yushan drinking with others, arms draped around both women and men, she was too stunned to speak.
She wandered inside and out, eventually understanding more and more.
The sun had set. Night had fallen.
The yard lights came on, but the party had only just begun.
The music surged again, and everyone spilled outside.
The temperature had dropped. Some people jumped into the pool, some sat by the edge drinking and chatting, and some disappeared with girls into the woods.
Shen Mengke sat dazed in a corner—she wasn’t fully sober. She’d had too much.
At some point, Yuan Yushan reappeared with two bottles of beer and a cigarette—not the same one as before.
She set the beers down on a low table and leaned toward Shen Mengke. The mix of smoke and alcohol made her frown instinctively.
“Drunk?” Yuan Yushan asked.
Shen Mengke smiled faintly. “A bit.”
Yuan Yushan offered her a cigarette. “Try it. Helps clear your head.”
“I don’t…”
Before she could finish, the cigarette was shoved into her hand.
“Give it a try. This is some good stuff—not addictive.”
Something in Shen Mengke’s mind exploded. She stared at Yuan Yushan in disbelief. “Yuan-jie, this… what is this?”
“A cigarette. Good stuff.” Yuan Yushan said with a smile, taking a puff and blowing the smoke in Shen Mengke’s face—a strangely sweet scent that instantly made her dizzy.
She heard Yuan Yushan laugh and say softly: “Silly girl.”
