Why Not (Lily ABO) - Chapter 9
One could say it was expected, or perhaps she had sensed it all along.
“I’m sorry, Shi Xu, I have someone I like.”
“I haven’t told everyone because we’re not together yet.”
Fu Shuyun’s tone was flat; her expression didn’t change a bit after hearing the Alpha’s confession. When Shi Xu appeared at the classroom door and invited her to dinner, Fu Shuyun vaguely sensed what he was going to say. She believed she had made her feelings obvious enough, short of announcing that she had someone she liked and was pursuing them.
Since Shi Xu still chose to speak, she would naturally respect him, and then gently reject him. Spending so much time with Shi Jing recently, it had been a long time since anyone had confessed to her. If no one saw her, how could they confess?
As they entered the school gate, the two said goodbye to each other. Fu Shuyun extended her right hand to Shi Xu.
“Although we can’t be together, thank you anyway. I truly appreciate it.”
Thank you for letting me meet Shi Jing.
Fu Shuyun returned to her dorm. Yun Yan, who had just been video-chatting with her “puppy girlfriend,” immediately leaned in.
“Did you say yes? Are you officially off the single?”
“Don’t be mad at me for saying this, Yunyun.”
“I think he looks a lot like your sister.”
No kidding, of course he does, they’re siblings, same parents. Fu Shuyun shook her head, indicating no. Yun Yan wasn’t surprised; it was normal to reject other confessions when you had someone you liked. Just as she was about to comfort her neglected “puppy,” Fu Shuyun’s voice rang out above her.
“Shi Jing.”
“Huh?”
“Sister’s name. She’s Shi Xu’s older sister.”
Huh??? What kind of plot is this? I want to be your boyfriend, but you want to be my sister-in-law? Yun Yan was stunned for a moment, unable to react. She only recovered her senses when she heard Fu Shuyun sighing repeatedly.
“Girl, you’re amazing!”
“Shi Xu confessed, aren’t you going to make a move quickly? You’ve been so close lately; why not take this opportunity to get together? Do you want to spend Singles’ Day alone again? I’m not keeping you company this year, my puppy wants to take me out to play~”
Seeing Fu Shuyun’s worried, distressed expression, as a good best friend, Yun Yan naturally had to cheer her on.
“Don’t overthink it, Yunyun, go for it!”
After hearing Yun Yan’s words, Fu Shuyun, who had been hesitant, immediately sent Shi Jing a WeChat message. They eventually arranged to meet two days later. That afternoon, after her classes, Fu Shuyun specifically went back to her dorm to shower before heading out. At the school gate, she saw Shi Jing talking to Shi Xu. She hesitated, wondering whether to approach; it felt awkward no matter what.
“Forget it,” she thought, “I’ll have to face it eventually. Shi Xu will find out sooner or later. As long as I’m not awkward, everyone else will be.” Fu Shuyun straightened her clothes, mentally prepared herself, and walked over to greet them.
“Sister, you’re here.”
As she spoke, she reached for Shi Jing’s hand. Shi Jing didn’t refuse; her hand naturally intertwined with Fu Shuyun’s. She continued to speak softly to Shi Xu. At the moment their hands clasped, Shi Xu felt a sudden understanding, but he wasn’t entirely sure.
“Shi Xu, Senior just said that it’s his birthday tomorrow, and he wants us to go together, just us. Yun Yan will bring a junior, and Senior also wants to introduce his boyfriend, so he said everyone with a partner should bring them along.”
Fu Shuyun said this for Shi Jing’s benefit, forgetting that she had just rejected Shi Xu two days prior. Shi Xu, who had had two days to buffer the rejection, wasn’t as bothered now. But hearing Fu Shuyun’s words, the sting of rejection resurfaced. He said nothing, simply bid them farewell, and returned to his dorm.
“Sister, what were you two talking about just now?”
Shi Jing smiled. The traffic light turned red, and while waiting, she picked up an envelope from the back seat and handed it to Fu Shuyun. It contained tickets to a concert she had always wanted to attend.
“During National Day, Mom and Dad just complained that I hadn’t been home in a while.”
“I originally planned a road trip with the family for National Day, but then I had to go on a business trip. We’ll just have to wait until Lunar New Year.”
At A City’s largest hotpot restaurant, the two sat down and waited for their food. Fu Shuyun held the concert tickets in her hand and turned to look at Shi Jing.
The temperature had gradually cooled down. After entering the restaurant, Shi Jing took off her jacket. Her clean white shirt sleeves were rolled up, and her hair was tied back, revealing her fair neck.
“Sister.”
“Hmm? What’s wrong?”
Shi Jing found Fu Shuyun’s serious expression adorable. Was eating hotpot really such a serious matter? It seemed fine before? Her eyes met Fu Shuyun’s, then moved down to her well-defined nose, and finally to her rosy lips. She couldn’t help but marvel at how beautiful and captivating this young person was. Shi Xu truly had good taste, and she liked her too. However, Fu Shuyun’s next words made her start to doubt herself.
“Be my girlfriend. I like you, Shi Jing.”
The air suddenly fell silent. Fu Shuyun listened to her own pounding heart, waiting for Shi Jing’s reply. The wait was agonizingly long, so long she felt she was about to be rejected. In reality, Shi Jing was just waiting for the waiter to serve the food, a process that took only two or three minutes, while simultaneously pondering their relationship.
At first, she genuinely saw Fu Shuyun only as a younger sister. But now, looking back at their interactions, it was far from a sisterly distance; it was too intimate. No AO (Alpha/Omega) sisters should be that close, let alone with recent physical contact. She had always been sensitive to Omegas crossing the line and would immediately distance herself.
“You don’t have to answer me now, Sister. You can tell me after you’ve thought about it.”
Afraid of being rejected, Fu Shuyun spoke before Shi Jing could. She was afraid to hear words that would make her sad. As long as she wasn’t rejected, there was still a chance. If all else failed, she could always find an estrus period…
A warm touch on her face interrupted her thoughts. She looked up at Shi Jing, who was still that gentle sister, a smile on her face, her clear blue eyes looking at her intently.
“I can’t give you an answer right now. To be honest, before this, I always saw you as a younger sister. When Shi Xu was born, I cried because he was a boy, you know what I mean?”
“Give me some time. I don’t want to rashly say yes and then tell you later that I only see you as a sister.”
Although she didn’t say yes immediately, Fu Shuyun was very satisfied. She shouldn’t push too hard, right? Shi Jing drove Fu Shuyun to the school gate. Before getting out, Fu Shuyun unbuckled her seatbelt, leaned over, quickly kissed Shi Jing’s lips, and then, after saying “Goodbye, Sister,” she ran off.
So soft.
The next day at the senior’s birthday party, everyone expected Fu Shuyun to bring a partner, but she arrived alone.
“She told me yesterday that she needed to think about it before replying to my confession.”
Everyone was discussing which Alpha was so amazing that Fu Shuyun’s confession required consideration, probably unaware that the number of people who liked her could fill an entire classroom. After all, he wasn’t the main character, so the topic quickly shifted. Only Shi Xu remained silent. Fu Shuyun noticed but said nothing.
Shi Xu, feeling down, punished himself with three drinks and left early. As soon as he got out, he took a taxi directly to Shi Jing’s place. Opening the door, he saw Shi Jing sitting on the sofa watching TV. He was angry, but also calm.
“Sister, is Fu Shuyun in love with you?”
He got straight to the point. If Fu Shuyun loved Shi Jing, he would accept it wholeheartedly because his sister was truly outstanding. Once he knew the answer, he could genuinely let go of Fu Shuyun.
“Yes, she confessed to me yesterday.”
There was nothing to hide. She told Shi Xu everything about their situation. Shi Xu frowned, then propped his chin in his hand, and finally couldn’t help but speak.
“Sister, you’re incredible. Are you a Beta or something?”
“Forget it, I don’t care, but you have to treat her well. She’s my future sister-in-law.”
“Tomorrow, there’s a school club event. She’ll be participating. Are you coming?”
Seeing that Shi Xu wasn’t angry, she was a little surprised. He even invited her to a school event. She thought about it; there wouldn’t be much work on Friday, so she probably wouldn’t need to work overtime. It might even be okay to slip away a bit early, so she agreed. Shi Xu immediately sent two WeChat messages to his good friends: his sister was too dense; if he didn’t give her a push, he might never have a sister-in-law in this lifetime.
The next day, she dropped Shi Xu off at school. He had originally come back empty-handed, but now he had a suitcase. When she asked what was inside, he wouldn’t say, so Shi Jing didn’t press him.
At 5 PM, Shi Jing arrived at the A University school gate. Shi Xu was waiting for her by the fence, holding his student ID card. Using Shi Xu’s card, she entered the school without any trouble. She found Shi Xu, who immediately teased her, saying she didn’t look like someone who was almost 28 at all. Then he put a black baseball cap on her head.
A University did have club performances today, but they were in the evening. Shi Xu had arranged to meet her at 5 PM, and she couldn’t understand why.
As they walked, they attracted many gazes. Everyone wondered whose Alpha this was; her aura was too good. Some bold students even approached to strike up a conversation, but Shi Jing politely declined each time. Shi Xu led her to a tree by the lake. From this angle, they could perfectly see the lakeside pavilion, which also obscured the view of the pavilion itself.
“Don’t tell me your club event is here?”
“This is A University students’ favorite spot. Coming so early, isn’t it perfect to stroll around the school?”
Shi Xu inwardly rolled his eyes to the heavens. My dear sister, a lake, lush greenery, a pavilion—it’s a confession spot, okay? He glanced at his phone. The time was about right. He crossed his arms, leaned against a nearby tree, and prepared to watch the show.
Shi Jing, still wondering why this place was so popular, suddenly saw a familiar figure enter her sight. Fu Shuyun? Talking to a boy about something? She couldn’t hear clearly from this distance, but an inner voice kept telling her that Fu Shuyun was being confessed to, and if she accepted…
A long-lost emotion welled up in her heart. At this moment, she was absolutely certain: she liked Fu Shuyun. A possessive kind of liking, a desire to meld with her. The lily of the valley scent in the air suddenly became intense and aggressive—and a little sour. Seeing the outcome she desired, Shi Xu patted her, told her how to get to the pavilion, and left by himself.
Shi Jing quickly walked towards the pavilion, observing the progress there. It seemed to be over. Fu Shuyun had already left the pavilion and was walking out. They were about to meet.
But she was stopped halfway by a female Alpha. Just as the female Alpha finished confessing, Shi Jing appeared. The female Alpha said sorry, took Fu Shuyun’s hand, and walked away. The female Alpha, whose confession had been interrupted, was about to get angry but was stopped dead in her tracks by a single glare from Shi Jing, forgetting what she was about to do. She stood frozen, watching the person who appeared halfway take her confession target away. It was the first time Shi Jing had done something so rude, and her ears quietly reddened.
Fu Shuyun, whose hand was being held, blushed even more. Snatching someone away like that, Sister is so Alpha!
