Why Suffer for This Distress (GL) - Chapter 21
He Jingmo looked at Wei Ning with a little confusion. They had talked for so long, and no matter what the topic, she had never seen such a big change in his expression. Now, what was with this wide-open mouth and staring eyes?
“Wei Ning?” He Jingmo called out his name, leaning forward to follow his gaze. Wei Ning was startled, quickly smiled, and said, “Sorry, I zoned out.” He was visibly flustered and confused, and a suspicious blush appeared on his handsome cheeks. He Jingmo was puzzled, as she hadn’t seen anything. Knowing Wei Ning didn’t want to elaborate, He Jingmo stirred the coffee in her hand and remained silent. She wouldn’t spend much effort on anyone other than Su Xiyan. Since he didn’t want to speak, there was no need for her to press.
He Jingmo lowered her head, staring at her phone in a daze, her mind filled with Su Xiyan’s face. Perhaps it was telepathy; the next second, her phone rang. He Jingmo snatched it up without even looking.
“Hello.” He Jingmo’s voice was filled with irrepressible joy. In contrast, Su Xiyan’s voice was like she had swallowed gunpowder, impatient mixed with irritable: “Hey, where are you? How’s that old man?” This “gunpowder” effect didn’t work. Instead, it smoothed out the chaos in He Jingmo’s heart, bringing her an inexplicable sense of relief. A smile appeared on He Jingmo’s face, and her voice became lighthearted.
“Did you finish showering?”
“Don’t change the subject because you’re feeling guilty! How’s the chat going? Be careful, the more seemingly respectable people are, the darker their hearts can be. You’re not a child anymore, don’t let anyone take advantage of you.”
Su Xiyan’s series of dark speculations spewed out like machine-gun fire, without pausing for breath. The voice transmitted through the phone was loud and ear-splitting. He Jingmo helplessly moved the phone slightly away from her ear, not wanting to face more intense protest from the person on the other end.
“Are you too lazy to even answer my calls now? Why are you holding the phone so far away?!”
Startled, He Jingmo gripped her phone and stood up, looking around. Just then, Su Xiyan, who had been suppressing her frustration for a long time, couldn’t hold back anymore. She stood up, gritted her teeth, glanced at her, and slowly walked over.
The resonant footsteps that almost seemed to crush the tiles, the fierce expression like carrying a machine gun onto a battlefield, coupled with Su Xiyan’s rather stylish black dress, made her look like a returning avenger. He Jingmo looked at her unblinkingly, her mood vastly improved. Su Xiyan walked to her side with a stern face. Ignoring Wei Ning’s presence, she grabbed He Jingmo’s hand, squeezed it hard, and looked at He Jingmo with a forced smile, “Oh, what a coincidence.”
He Jingmo stifled a laugh and nodded, “Yes, quite a coincidence.”
“Since it’s such a coincidence, why don’t we join you?” Su Xiyan’s face became even uglier. Wei Ning’s decent appearance was a heavy blow to her. This scene was clearly different from what she had imagined. Why didn’t the old man have wrinkles, loose teeth, and a bald head? Who was this smooth skin, perfect white teeth, and thick hair for?
“Heh, no need. CEO Su, you go about your business.” He Jingmo refused Su Xiyan’s invitation with a laugh, her heart blooming with joy. Su Xiyan’s face was livid. She stared at her for a while. Seeing no sign of her relenting, she gritted her teeth and shifted her attack, turning to Wei Ning, “Do you mind if I join you?”
This was direct. Wei Ning snapped out of his daze, smiled a little flusteredly, and nodded, “Of course.”
Su Xiyan gave a demure, light smile, smoothed her long hair behind her ear, and looked at him, “There are only two chairs here. Are you not going to get up and expect me to sit on the floor?”
She delivered a direct, silent slap. Wei Ning’s face flushed as he stood up, somewhat at a loss, completely different from the calm demeanor he had when chatting with He Jingmo earlier. He Jingmo on the side was red-faced, trying to suppress her laughter. Su Xiyan unceremoniously pulled Wei Ning’s chair, sat down close to He Jingmo, picked up He Jingmo’s coffee, and looked at Wei Ning with a very false apology, “Heh, I’m so sorry to interrupt your date.”
He Jingmo rolled her eyes. How could she not see any awkwardness from Su Xiyan? Wei Ning stood awkwardly on the side. Fortunately, the waiter was perceptive and brought another chair.
“What would you like to drink, Miss Su?”
Wei Ning sat down, his expression back to normal. Su Xiyan raised an eyebrow at him, shook the cup in her hand, and looked disdainful, as if to say, Are you blind?
He Jingmo, however, was stunned for a moment, looking at Wei Ning, slightly frowning. Miss Su? He knows Xiyan?
“I’ll have another latte.” Wei Ning smiled and ordered another cup, his eyes fixed on Su Xiyan. This was completely different from the pure appreciation he had shown for He Jingmo. His dark pupils were full of surprise and amazement. He Jingmo watched the two of them calmly, the smile on her face gradually fading.
“You two continue chatting. It’s fine, just pretend I’m air.” Su Xiyan waved her hand understandingly, signaling them to relax. Her posture and movements had a very authoritative air. The newly ordered latte was served. Wei Ning handed it to He Jingmo, who had an empty hand. Su Xiyan crossed her arm, stretched out her hand, and snatched it up, giving Wei Ning a very fake smile, “Heh. She’s not feeling well and can’t drink coffee. I’ll take it.”
He Jingmo still watched the two of them without a word, her brows slightly furrowed. Because Su Xiyan snatched the coffee with an almost grabbing motion, there was inevitably skin contact. Just the slight brush of fingertips made Wei Ning blush.
“If I can’t drink it, you can?” The suspicion in her heart was confirmed. He Jingmo looked at Su Xiyan coldly, feeling very upset. Su Xiyan thought it was because she had interrupted her date that she received such a cold look. She didn’t take it to heart at all, smiled charmingly, and looked at Wei Ning while answering He Jingmo, “Heh. You and I are not the same. Your body is so weak that even having children later will be a problem. And you still want to drink coffee?”
The words and the curse were quite vicious. He Jingmo glared at Su Xiyan. Although she had no intention of having children in this lifetime, why did those words sound so harsh and unpleasant coming from Su Xiyan’s mouth? Wei Ning smiled nonchalantly at their conversation, still staring intently at Su Xiyan, his eyes sparkling.
He Jingmo watched Wei Ning, her brows furrowed even tighter. She felt very irritated. Her good impression of Wei Ning was completely ruined. Now, there were only two words to describe her impression of this man: pervert.
“What were you two talking about just now? You looked so happy?” Su Xiyan didn’t care about He Jingmo’s mood. She was completely focused on finding out what they were talking about that made He Jingmo so happy. Wei Ning smiled and said, “We were talking about college.”
“College? Oh right, you went to the same university as us.” Su Xiyan’s words were so sour they were almost bubbling. They really have a connection. Wei Ning nodded. Changing the subject, he looked at Su Xiyan, “Yes, I know you.”
“Know me?” Su Xiyan looked at Wei Ning in surprise. Why did she have no memory of this old man? Wei Ning nodded, “Mhm. In the student council, I—”
“Su Xiyan.” He Jingmo interrupted Wei Ning, looking at Su Xiyan expressionlessly. Su Xiyan turned her head to look at her, “What is it?”
“I’m thirsty.” He Jingmo stared at her unblinkingly. Su Xiyan seemed to understand and nodded, waving at the waiter: “A bottle of mineral water, room temperature.”
“I want to drink black tea.”
He Jingmo was in a bad mood and needed something sweet to calm down. Su Xiyan rolled her eyes at her, “If you drink tea, you’ll be sleepless tonight. Don’t you know your own constitution?”
“You two live together?” Wei Ning picked up on something from their intimate conversation. Su Xiyan proudly nodded, “Yes, we’ve slept together for many years.”
Slept together… How could a difference of one word make it sound so sleazy, and how did a few months suddenly turn into many years?
He Jingmo was too tired to even criticize Su Xiyan anymore. She sipped the tasteless mineral water, lowered her head, and remained silent.
“What do you think of my Jingmo?” Su Xiyan finally felt a sense of urgency. She looked at Wei Ning unblinkingly. This was the question she cared about the most. The man in front of her was excellent and impeccable in all aspects. The more so, the more anxious Su Xiyan became, forgetting who had insisted that He Jingmo should find a good husband and marry.
“Jingmo is very good.”
Wei Ning’s answer was direct. He smiled and looked at He Jingmo. After talking with her today, he already regarded He Jingmo as a confidante, a sister. Even more unexpectedly, she had brought him luck. The person who had occupied his thoughts for so long had suddenly appeared like an angel. Wei Ning felt like he was in a dream.
“Very good?” Su Xiyan looked at Wei Ning with a sneer. Her narrow, beautiful eyes narrowed slightly, emitting an invisible cold light. Wei Ning looked at her, slightly startled, not knowing what he had said wrong.
“So, you want to continue chatting with her for a long time?”
Su Xiyan stared intently at Wei Ning. He Jingmo, on the other hand, was staring at her. Wei Ning was flustered by their unusual behavior, “N-No, I have someone I like. I—”
“You have someone you like?” Su Xiyan’s hand trembled, and she excitedly spilled coffee all over the table. Wei Ning wiped the table with a napkin while nodding, “Yes, I have someone I like. I’ve had a crush on her for a long time.”
“Hey, you should have said so earlier.” The heavy stone weighing on her heart was gone. Su Xiyan’s heart was bright and shining like the moon in the sky. Her mouth curved into a wide grin. In her complacency, she reached out and grandly patted Wei Ning’s shoulder, “Don’t worry. You’re so excellent. The girl you have a crush on will definitely belong to you.”
