Wife, I’ve Been Reborn (GL) - Chapter 22
Chapter 22
Mu Nan’s Rise and Xu Liangchen’s Calm
Time flew by. Xu Liangchen’s attention was fixed on early November, more precisely, the first weekend of November. The location was Song Yu’s house. She remembered that Song Yu would invite the entire class to his eighteenth birthday party, and on that day, Song Bei would be home. This week happened to be the first week of November.
On Friday, Song Yu indeed announced the party in class. Although he was usually a troublemaker, his relationship with his classmates was quite good, and he was also rather loyal. So, as soon as they heard he was having a birthday party, many classmates eagerly signed up. Song Yu was tallying the names, but he hesitated when he got to Mu Nan. He still remembered the incident last time when that boy from Class One confessed and caused a stir, and he wondered if Xu Liangchen had taken it to heart.
Mu Nan grabbed the form. “Oh, so many classmates are going.” Song Yu’s face held a hint of smugness. “Of course! You’re looking at me, the young master, I only need to call, and a hundred will answer!” Mu Nan chuckled and pointed at him. “Shameless!” Song Yu nodded, looking serious. “Hurry up, are you going or not?” Mu Nan handed the form to Xu Liangchen and quietly asked, “Are you going?”
Xu Liangchen was about to speak when Song Yu scratched his head. “Hey, it’s fine if she doesn’t go. After all, top students are usually busy.” Two girls behind him scoffed. “Exactly. Top students’ time is for studying, not for hanging out with you delinquents.” Another girl laughed particularly loudly. Song Yu’s fair face looked a little displeased. Xu Liangchen stood up, looking at the two girls. “Excuse me, I think you’re mistaken.” “I quite enjoy hanging out with them.”
The girls were stunned by her words, and even Mu Nan looked up at her. Xu Liangchen’s lips were tightly pressed together, her phoenix eyes emotionless, as she calmly looked at the gossiping girls. The atmosphere was incredibly awkward for a moment. Song Yu was the first to speak, breaking the tense silence. He took the form from Mu Nan’s hand. “Then it’s settled. Both you and Xu Liangchen are coming!” With that, he rubbed his nose and walked away from Xu Liangchen. This Xu Liangchen gives him a feeling that’s too much like his second sister. Especially when those eyes looked at people. Damn, she’s really intimidating. When I have time, I definitely need to introduce her to my second sister!
Mu Nan saw Song Yu leave, then tugged at Xu Liangchen’s arm, pulling her back down to sit, and quietly asked, “What’s wrong with you?” Xu Liangchen spoke unhurriedly. “Nothing.” How could it be nothing? Holy cow, she was scared to death just now. She thought Xu Liangchen was going to confront those busybodies. But even if she did, she definitely wouldn’t be the one to lose. And usually, those girls didn’t spare any effort in badmouthing Xu Liangchen, saying things like she was poor and pretending to be noble, or that she was pretty and casually seduced others. Good heavens, does someone who looks like Xu Liangchen even need to seduce men?! Anyone would pounce on her in an instant. Mu Nan swallowed. As a woman, she also wanted to pounce! The girls saw Mu Nan sit down and resumed their noisy chatter. However, they couldn’t help but glance towards Xu Liangchen’s seat as they spoke. Mu Nan occasionally glanced at them, then turned to Xu Liangchen and said, “I heard people say you have a really good temper and never get angry.” Xu Liangchen smiled faintly upon hearing this. “Rumors stop with the wise.” Mu Nan rubbed her head and turned to look at her. Xu Liangchen took out a book and tapped her head with it. “Apparently, you’re not.” Mu Nan: …
…
A Confused Admirer and a Cold Truth
During the break before evening self-study, Mu Nan heard someone call out from the doorway, “Xu Liangchen, someone’s looking for you!” Xu Liangchen, who was sitting next to her, looked up towards the door. Mu Nan also followed her gaze. Xu Liangchen’s brows then subtly furrowed. Why is that boy from Class One here again? She reluctantly stood up. Mu Nan saw her about to leave and quickly grabbed her arm, looking up at her like a small dog, her eyes moist. “Xu Liangchen, you don’t like him, do you?” Xu Liangchen patted her head. “Don’t overthink.” Then she walked out.
Cheng Yu saw Xu Liangchen appear at the doorway. His face was slightly flushed, especially when their phoenix eyes met; his ears quietly turned red. Xu Liangchen stood for a long time without him speaking, then said, “Shall we step aside and talk?” Cheng Yu nodded vigorously, following behind Xu Liangchen.
As soon as they got to the rooftop, Cheng Yu couldn’t hold back his words and blurted out, “Xu Liangchen, what do you think of my suggestion last time?” The last suggestion was that after the love letter, Cheng Yu had someone deliver another letter to her, saying he wanted to be with her and asked her to reply. Xu Liangchen found it troublesome, threw the letter away, and didn’t think about it again. Now, being reminded, she felt a little embarrassed. Whether she agreed or not, she hadn’t shown any proper attitude. This was a bit disrespectful to Cheng Yu. Thinking this, Xu Liangchen’s attitude softened slightly. Her voice was already light, and now it was even softer, sounding very gentle to Cheng Yu. “I’m sorry, I have someone I like.”
Cheng Yu’s flushed face became even redder, his gaze fixed on Xu Liangchen. The breeze rustled her hair, revealing her exquisite face. His voice was small. “I know…” His voice even carried a hint of shyness, like bashfulness. Xu Liangchen frowned upon hearing this. Does this kid not understand what I’m saying, or what? Why is he so shy? Or does he think the person I like is… himself? Thinking of this possibility, Xu Liangchen quickly clarified. “The person I like isn’t you.” Cheng Yu’s previously flushed face immediately turned pale, his body swayed, a little incredulous. “How is that possible? You don’t like me? I’ve checked…”
Xu Liangchen suddenly looked up, staring directly at him, her phoenix eyes cold, her voice dropping several degrees. “You investigated me?” Cheng Yu quickly waved his hands. “No, I didn’t mean to, it was Zhao Shi…” His words seemed to get stuck in his throat. He lowered his head, biting his roots. “I’m sorry!” With that, he turned and scurried away.
Xu Liangchen clenched her hands behind her back. Zhao Shi, Zhao Shi, always Zhao Shi. She had seen Zhao Shi much quieter this past month, and she had been wondering if her plans needed to be delayed. It seemed unnecessary now. Some people are more impatient than her. Xu Liangchen exhaled and walked to the edge of the rooftop. From a gap in the railing, she took out a pack of cigarettes and a lighter. She had left the unfinished pack there last time. She didn’t expect to need it again. The lighter clicked, and in the sparks of light, she lit the cigarette, taking a deep drag. Suddenly, a voice came from behind her.
“Do you smoke a lot?”
