Wife, I’ve Been Reborn (GL) - Chapter 24
Chapter 24
Confrontation on the Rooftop
On Saturday, Zhao Shi appeared. During morning self-study, Mu Nan pulled Chen Jiao to find him. Zhao Shi had no idea what was going on. Mu Nan, with Chen Jiao, approached Zhao Shi on the rooftop. She glanced around, saw no other students, and said to Chen Jiao, “You two talk? I’ll stand guard.” Chen Jiao nodded, giving her a grateful look. Mu Nan reassuringly patted her hand, signaling her to remain calm. Then she turned and glared fiercely at Zhao Shi, saying unhappily, “You two talk properly.” With that, she walked straight to the rooftop door and closed it. Soon after, sounds came from the door.
Mu Nan leaned against the iron door, her body still stiff. If it weren’t for Chen Jiao, she would never have had anything to do with Zhao Shi again in her life. After the KTV incident, he had sought her out to apologize, but she refused. What was there to apologize for? If it weren’t for Xu Liangchen, her life would have been ruined. What good would any number of apologies do? Afterwards, Chen Jiao also asked Mu Nan out a few times, saying Zhao Shi wanted to make amends. Each time, she would drag Xu Liangchen along. After two such attempts, Chen Jiao stopped inviting her out.
Zhao Shi seemed unfazed by Mu Nan’s hostile glare. It wasn’t until Mu Nan closed the door that he walked gently to Chen Jiao’s side, a faint smile on his face. “What’s wrong?” Chen Jiao’s eyes were slightly red. She whispered in his ear, “Zhao Shi, I’m pregnant.” Zhao Shi’s brows immediately furrowed. The gentle smile in his eyes vanished, replaced by coldness. “Really?” “When did this happen?” Chen Jiao’s face turned beet red with anxiety, wishing she could scream at him, “Can something like this be fake?!” Yet, the more anxious she became, the more speechless she was, only able to stare with unwilling eyes. “Zhao Shi!” “Do you think I’m joking?!” Looking at the girl who was usually gentle with him, now full of indignation, her face flushed! With a hint of despair, her eyes filled with tears. Zhao Shi knew she wasn’t lying.
He grabbed her shoulders and lowered his head, looking her in the eye. “Jiaojiao, listen to me. We can’t keep it now. You’ll get an abortion, okay?” Chen Jiao shook her head frantically, collapsing into a squat. “I don’t know, I don’t know!” Tears streamed down her cheeks. Zhao Shi’s eyes flashed with disgust, but he still gently comforted her. “Don’t cry, don’t cry. How about this, tomorrow, when we have a holiday, we’ll meet and talk, okay?” His voice seemed to have a calming effect. Chen Jiao composed herself and looked back at him. “Will you abandon me?” Zhao Shi’s eyes became even gentler. “No, I won’t.” Chen Jiao nodded, as if she had taken a reassurance pill after hearing this. She slowly stood up and walked towards the stairwell. Zhao Shi followed behind her, deliberately keeping his distance, his eyes filled with detachment, indifference, and a hint of disdain.
…
Zhao Shi’s Schemes and Mu Nan’s Concerns
Mu Nan heard the knock on the door and quickly opened it to let Chen Jiao in. She didn’t even spare a glance at Zhao Shi behind her. She didn’t even want to look at him now. Zhao Shi, on the other hand, stared intently at Mu Nan. Several incidents in a row had been interrupted by Xu Liangchen, which made him feel a bit frustrated. The information he had found was useless. Later, he heard from Huang Mao that Xu Liangchen might be connected to Song Bei, and it was possible that Song Bei had suppressed the information he couldn’t find. He didn’t believe it. If she really had a connection with Song Bei, how could she have ended up as an escort? Huang Mao warned him to be careful. If she wasn’t connected, he would be the first to not let her off the hook!
Zhao Shi’s eyes seemed to spew sparks as he looked at Mu Nan. If it weren’t for her, he would never have touched Chen Jiao, and this whole mess wouldn’t have happened! It was all because of her! That day, he had only intended to take Chen Jiao home. He hadn’t planned on touching her; he really wasn’t interested in someone so “pure.” However, he ran into Jiang Hao outside, and Jiang Hao happened to know Xu Liangchen. Afraid that Jiang Hao would say something wrong in front of Chen Jiao, he quickly took Chen Jiao away. He didn’t expect her to be so drunk that she couldn’t walk, so he had to carry her to a nearby hotel. What happened next was natural; he didn’t believe any man would spit out the fat meat delivered to his mouth. It was just that Chen Jiao was pregnant now, and if this got out, he couldn’t escape responsibility. He had to deal with Chen Jiao as soon as possible.
Zhao Shi returned to the classroom, still feeling uncomfortable. Xu Liangchen was an eyesore no matter how he looked at her. If it weren’t for her, how could so many things have happened! Xu Liangchen seemed not to notice his gaze. Her eyes fell on Mu Nan, who had just entered. Mu Nan helped Chen Jiao sit down and then turned to walk towards her. Because she had just helped Chen Jiao, her clothes were a bit disheveled. She was wearing a shirt, and a slight movement revealed the fair skin at her waist. Xu Liangchen stared at that spot, somewhat displeased.
…
Xu Liangchen’s Demands and a School-Wide Health Check
As soon as Mu Nan sat down, Xu Liangchen said, “Don’t wear shirts anymore.” Mu Nan looked confused. “Why?” Xu Liangchen lowered her head to read her book, feigning a light cough. “Too ugly.” … You’re the ugly one! Mu Nan muttered silently to herself, but she didn’t actually say it out loud. All she could think about now was Chen Jiao’s situation. When she had just returned, Chen Jiao said that Zhao Shi had asked her out to talk tomorrow. Mu Nan asked if she needed her to accompany her, but Chen Jiao shook her head, wanting to talk to Zhao Shi alone. Mu Nan agreed, telling her to notify her immediately if anything happened.
Chen Jiao didn’t respond to her until she sat down. Mu Nan was a little worried, constantly shifting in her seat. Xu Liangchen beside her finally couldn’t help but ask, “Can you sit still?” Mu Nan felt a little stifled by the reprimand. She lowered her head, looking unhappy. Seeing her like this, Xu Liangchen felt a pang of pity and said, “Tomorrow at 3 PM, I’ll pick you up from your house. Before that, don’t leave home.” Mu Nan hadn’t replied yet when Xu Liangchen shook her head. “Forget it, I’ll just go to your house tomorrow morning.” Mu Nan looked bewildered. “Why come so early?” “For tutoring.” Mu Nan’s face showed utter despair. Her attention, which had been entirely on Chen Jiao, shifted back a bit. “It’s a rare holiday, no tutoring…” “You don’t have to tutor.” “Then do test questions.” Mu Nan lowered her head mournfully, not saying a word. Xu Liangchen patted her head like a puppy, then looked at Chen Jiao and Zhao Shi. Her gaze met Zhao Shi’s head-on, and she calmly shifted her eyes. She silently said to herself. Unrepentant.
Chen Jiao’s gaze remained fixed on Zhao Shi. She always felt very uneasy, her face constantly pale, as if she might faint at any moment. During class, the homeroom teacher walked in, looking quite displeased. She first scanned the room, then her gaze settled on the female students. Her usual smiling expression was gone, replaced by something rather chilling. She opened her textbook but didn’t begin teaching, her tone heavy. “Next Tuesday, there will be a physical examination. Please be prepared.”
The classroom immediately buzzed with noise. They had already had a physical examination at the beginning of the school year. Why another one? And they had never heard of high school seniors needing two check-ups in one semester. Some were happy, some were worried. The happy ones were those who got another chance to relax; those two days of physical examination meant no classes, which was undoubtedly a mini-holiday for them as seniors. But some people were very worried. Like Chen Jiao. When she heard the news, her whole body trembled uncontrollably, her large eyes filled with tears. She lowered her head, and tears spread across her face. Apart from Mu Nan, who was watching her, no one noticed her emotional change. The homeroom teacher told them to be quiet, saying that the specific arrangements would be announced, then proceeded with the normal lesson.
…
Desperate Measures and a Disturbing Rumor
Mu Nan was very worried that Chen Jiao wouldn’t be able to control herself. Luckily, nothing happened all day. Chen Jiao was as quiet as a transparent person, just lying on her desk. Lifeless. Xu Liangchen knew what Mu Nan was worried about. During the break, she told Mu Nan, “Mu Nan, if Chen Jiao doesn’t tell her family soon, she’ll harm herself.” Mu Nan was also as anxious as an ant on a hot pan. How could she not know? She didn’t know why, but a physical examination was suddenly arranged. It really caught everyone off guard. Even if Chen Jiao managed to hide this for the next two days, it would definitely be discovered during the upcoming physical examination. It was truly nerve-wracking.
Just as Mu Nan was feeling mentally exhausted over this matter, she heard Xiao Xin behind her say, “Do you know why there’s a sudden physical examination?” Mu Nan immediately listened attentively. Xiao Xin said, “I’ll tell you, but you absolutely, absolutely can’t tell anyone. It seems they received a report saying someone in our school is pregnant!” The girl next to Xiao Xin looked shocked, her mouth open wide enough to fit an egg! Mu Nan wanted to retort but didn’t know what to say. Xu Liangchen beside her calmly said, “If it’s really a report, they would investigate secretly. Doing it so openly isn’t telling everyone that there’s something fishy going on in this school?” “If someone else is found to be pregnant,” “Would any parents dare to send their children to this school again?” Xiao Xin listened to this analysis and it seemed logical, but she had heard it from the director of student affairs, so she was a bit unsure who to believe for a moment. Mu Nan turned to Xiao Xin. “Unreliable gossip! Discard it!” Even the girl next to Xiao Xin looked at Xiao Xin with disdain, as if she were spreading false rumors. Xiao Xin frowned, also starting to doubt her source of information.
Mu Nan exhaled and quietly asked Xu Liangchen, “Xu Liangchen, what should we do now…?” Xu Liangchen casually opened her textbook. “It’s ‘you,’ not ‘we’.” “Also, these aren’t your concerns.” Mu Nan pouted, not speaking. How could she not be concerned? That was Chen Jiao.
