Wife, I’ve Been Reborn (GL) - Chapter 28
Chapter 28
The next day was overcast, and the temperature dropped sharply. The weather, which was originally around twenty degrees Celsius, suddenly plummeted to four or five degrees. The cool wind that blew across one’s face stung like a knife.
Mu Nan put on her cotton jacket and a face mask.
This weather was a bit of winter and a bit of summer.
It was killing her.
Mu Nan rarely walked to school with Xu Liangchen. She usually walked with Chen Jiao, and today was no exception, as she also wanted to know what was going on with Chen Jiao.
Chen Jiao walked out of her house with a pale face. When she saw Mu Nan, she looked even more panicked, but she was trying to stay calm.
Mu Nan took two steps forward and looked at her. “What’s wrong? What did you and Zhao Shi talk about yesterday?”
Chen Jiao shook her head and didn’t say anything.
Yesterday morning, she and Zhao Shi went to the hospital to get an abortion, but the doctor refused to perform the surgery without a parent present because the procedure was risky, and no one could take on that responsibility.
Chen Jiao felt a little desperate. If her parents found out about this, they would surely kill her.
Helpless, she had no choice but to ask Zhao Shi for help. Zhao Shi was also very anxious.
He didn’t dare to tell his parents about this either.
He had already fallen out with them for transferring to No. 3 Middle School without their permission. Now that this had happened, they would surely flay him.
And the baby was absolutely not an option.
Zhao Shi could only ask Blondie for help.
Blondie finally pointed him in the right direction: go to a small clinic. They wouldn’t require a signature, but in return, they would need more money.
And money was not something Zhao Shi was short on.
Chen Jiao, with no other options, could only follow Zhao Shi to the small clinic. After a series of bl00d tests and examinations, the doctor told them the earliest they could perform the surgery would be on Thursday, after the check-up results came back.
Chen Jiao suddenly started crying. The school’s physical exam was on Tuesday, and she couldn’t have the surgery until Thursday.
This was literally going to be the death of her!
Zhao Shi comforted her, telling her not to worry and that he had a plan. He promised that the school would not find out about her pregnancy.
Chen Jiao was both skeptical and hopeful. She listened to Zhao Shi’s plan.
At first, she disagreed, but she couldn’t resist Zhao Shi’s persistence. He finally hit her with a last resort, saying this was the only way, and if she didn’t agree, he would go back and tell her parents and let them decide what to do.
Chen Jiao panicked instantly, not knowing what to do.
Zhao Shi continued to persuade her, telling her that the school’s physical exam was scheduled at such a time because someone had reported them. But it was too much of a coincidence that someone would report her so soon after she found out she was pregnant.
Chen Jiao naturally didn’t make the connection.
Zhao Shi delivered a heavy blow, saying that he saw Mu Nan enter the homeroom teacher’s office.
Chen Jiao didn’t believe Mu Nan would do such a thing, but Zhao Shi’s arguments were so convincing, and she was in such a terrible situation that she could hardly think straight.
Zhao Shi told her that if she wanted to see if Mu Nan really considered her a friend, she should do as he said.
If Mu Nan didn’t do it, she could just apologize to her after the abortion was over.
Chen Jiao was undecided, but she was more terrified of the school and her parents finding out.
If someone had to walk the tightrope, she didn’t want it to be her.
Mu Nan, who had been observing Chen Jiao’s expression, spoke up. “Jiaojiao, I think it would be best if we told your aunt and uncle about this.”
Chen Jiao shook her head violently. “No! Don’t tell them!”
Her emotions were high, and her voice was sharp. Passersby looked over. Mu Nan grabbed her arm. “Okay, okay, don’t get so agitated. Let’s talk about it slowly.”
Chen Jiao was still in an emotional state, but she turned to look at Mu Nan. “Nannan, are you my best friend?”
Mu Nan frowned. “Of course I am.”
Chen Jiao bit her lip, hesitating. “Do you remember in fifth grade when I jumped into the river to save you and almost drowned? When you woke up, you told me you owed me a favor.”
Mu Nan didn’t say anything. Of course, she remembered that.
Not only that, but in the second year of junior high, she and her classmates went to a neighboring city to play, got separated from them, and wandered around the unfamiliar city all afternoon. In the end, it was Chen Jiao who took a two-hour car ride to bring her back.
She naturally remembered all the good things Chen Jiao had done for her.
But now that she brought it up, a bad feeling suddenly rose in Mu Nan’s heart.
“Nannan?”
Mu Nan looked at Chen Jiao, her eyes a little cold. “What do you want to do?”
Chen Jiao lowered her head. “I don’t know…”
She didn’t dare to say it because in Zhao Shi’s plan…
…Mu Nan was a part of it.
The person who had to walk the tightrope was Mu Nan.
Mu Nan sighed helplessly and placed her hands on her shoulders. “Jiaojiao, I know it’s hard for you to talk to your parents about this. How about I help you tell them?”
Chen Jiao’s emotions were no longer so agitated. It seemed she had made a decision. She looked at Mu Nan. “Don’t tell them, please. At least not before Tuesday.”
She stared at Mu Nan without blinking until she nodded, and then she finally relaxed.
Mu Nan, however, was thinking that if Chen Jiao still didn’t come clean after Tuesday, she would have to do it herself, even if Chen Jiao ended up hating her. She couldn’t watch her shoulder this all by herself.
Chen Jiao simply couldn’t handle it.
When the two of them arrived at the classroom, Mu Nan saw a few students gathered around her seat. She pushed through the crowd and saw Song Yu handing a bouquet of flowers to Xu Liangchen. “Here, this is from my second sister.”
Xu Liangchen looked at the flowers, silently took them, and didn’t say a word.
The boys standing next to Song Yu couldn’t help but ask, “Song Yu, your second sister knows Xu Liangchen?”
“Yeah, yeah. Isn’t Xu Liangchen a good student? How does she know your second sister?”
What kind of talk is that? What do you mean a good student can’t know his second sister?
Is his second sister that scary?
Song Yu spread his hands.
He didn’t know what was going on either.
He was just a messenger, not the person himself.
And Xu Liangchen was the same. She didn’t seem surprised at all to receive the flowers. She was as inscrutable and mysterious as his second sister.
Mu Nan sat back in her seat, and the morning self-study bell rang, causing the students to scatter.
Xu Liangchen took out her book and placed the flowers in the desk.
Mu Nan’s heart sank a little when she saw her actions.
When Xu Liangchen first transferred here, she received countless love letters, chocolates, and small cakes, but she never kept a single one. She would place them on the windowsill, waiting for the people who sent them to take them back.
Of course, some people wouldn’t take them back, and they would be taken away by the student on duty.
She had never even looked at them once.
But now, she put this bouquet of flowers in her drawer.
Mu Nan knew that this meant Xu Liangchen had accepted them.
What did that mean?
A sudden wave of panic washed over Mu Nan. She didn’t even know what she was panicking about. She was in a daze until morning self-study was over.
Xu Liangchen went to the restroom after class. Xiaoxin poked her in the back, and Mu Nan turned around.
“Hey, did Xu Liangchen talk to you about Song Bei yesterday?”
Song Bei, Song Bei, Song Bei.
Mu Nan was so annoyed hearing those two words that she puffed out her cheeks and said, “No!”
Xiaoxin was about to ask something else when she saw Xu Liangchen walking into the classroom. She swallowed her words and turned her attention to something else.
Mu Nan was sullen and rested her head on her desk.
Her mind involuntarily went back to the question she had asked Xu Liangchen last night.
Do you have someone you like?
Yes.
What kind of person are they?
A very… special person.
She had hesitated before saying “a very special person.”
Does she like Song Bei?
When Xu Liangchen returned to her seat, she saw Mu Nan sulking like a puppy. She asked, “What’s wrong?”
Mu Nan shook her head. “Nothing.”
She then stopped talking to her.
She barely spoke to Xu Liangchen for the rest of the day. Xu Liangchen was a little confused about why she was angry, but she also had things to deal with and couldn’t focus too much on Mu Nan.
After class in the afternoon, Mu Nan went home for dinner. Xu Liangchen usually went with her, but today, she let her go back alone.
Mu Nan was already sulking, so she just snorted and left.
Not long after, Xu Liangchen appeared at the school gate with the flowers.
By now, it was dark. The evening breeze blew Xu Liangchen’s fine hair, revealing her delicate face.
Song Bei was sitting in her car. She saw Xu Liangchen come out and rolled down the window.
She said in a deep voice, “Over here.”
Xu Liangchen walked toward her. The car door was opened, and she got in.
Song Bei held up the file she had investigated. She had a smile on her face, but it didn’t reach her eyes and had a hint of coldness. “Very good, you came prepared, huh?”
This was a jab at what Xu Liangchen had said yesterday afternoon about being prepared.
Xu Liangchen knew that after Song Bei had read all her information, her “being prepared” comment was just a way to build her confidence, but in the end, she couldn’t hide it from Song Bei.
Xu Liangchen didn’t dawdle and went straight to the point. “Just say yes or no to the deal.”
Song Bei crossed her arms over her chest, still wearing the black professional suit, her expression sharp. “I thought my meaning this morning was very clear.”
This morning?
She had Song Yu bring the flower.
A third of a smile appeared in Xu Liangchen’s phoenix eyes. She reached out to Song Bei. “Pleasure working with you.”
Song Bei, however, didn’t extend her hand to shake it. Instead, she let her gaze fall on Xu Liangchen’s slender hand. “I’m not so curious about where Chen Xiao is right now. I’m more curious about how you know.”
With that, she lifted the file she was holding. “Don’t try to fool me.”
Xu Liangchen hesitated for a moment and then said slowly, “Chen Xiao has a cousin who used to be at No. 1 Middle School. He’s very fond of her.”
She wasn’t lying. Chen Xiao’s cousin really was at No. 1 Middle School, and she had found Chen Xiao through this lead.
And she herself had also been at No. 1 Middle School.
Hearing this, Song Bei’s sharp eyes narrowed slightly as she looked at Xu Liangchen’s profile. “Are you close?”
Xu Liangchen smiled faintly, turned to look at Song Bei, and the sharpness in her phoenix eyes was not a bit weaker than Song Bei’s.
“Not close.”
“Just acquaintances…”
