Wife, I’ve Been Reborn (GL) - Chapter 42
Chapter 42
Xu Liangchen did not sleep a wink all night, but Song Bei had a good night’s sleep. While she was asleep, Xu Liangchen placed her arms and legs properly. Although the hospital bed was small, there was still some distance between them.
When the sky was just starting to get light, Song Bei woke up. She found her own posture and Xu Liangchen’s wary expression a bit amusing. She rubbed her fringe and got up, ready to go to the bathroom to wash up.
By the time she came out again, Xu Liangchen was already awake, sitting upright on the edge of the bed.
Song Bei was a little unhappy. “Why are you up? Your wound isn’t healed yet.”
After a night of rest, Xu Liangchen felt much better. Although the wound still hurt a little, it wasn’t as bad as it was last night, and her strength had recovered by more than half. She stepped out of bed in her slippers.
Song Bei took two steps forward. “What are you doing?”
Xu Liangchen retorted unhappily, “Going to the toilet. What, does Second Miss Song want to follow?”
A smile appeared in Song Bei’s eyes. She held Xu Liangchen’s arms with both hands. “If you don’t mind…”
Xu Liangchen pushed Song Bei’s arms away, staggered to the bathroom, and the door slammed shut with a bang. Song Bei touched the tip of her nose, a faint smile on her face.
When she came out again, the doctor was already waiting on the side to take her temperature. Xu Liangchen was lying in bed. She saw Song Bei leave for half an hour and come back with a lot of breakfast. She glanced at it, turned her head away without much appetite.
Song Bei helped her sit up. “Is this how you treat your savior?”
Xu Liangchen knew that if Song Bei hadn’t suddenly appeared last night, she wouldn’t be here in peace and quiet right now. The better outcome would have been those men throwing her there, and the worse one…
She wasn’t oblivious to what could have happened, and Song Bei had saved her from all that harm.
It was impossible not to feel grateful.
Otherwise, with her personality, she would have kicked her off the bed as soon as she had a little strength.
Xu Liangchen calmed herself down, her voice soft. “Thank you.”
Song Bei shook her head in disapproval. “That’s not very sincere.”
“What do you want?”
Song Bei crossed her arms over her chest, scrutinizing her carefully. Her tone was nonchalant. “How about you give yourself to me?”
Xu Liangchen was furious at her rascal-like behavior. She bit her lip. “Song Bei! Don’t push your luck!”
Song Bei leaned back in her chair and placed the breakfast on the small table in front of Xu Liangchen. “I’m just teasing you.”
“Eat.”
Xu Liangchen opened the lid of the rice porridge, stirred it with a spoon, and listened to Song Bei. “I’ve had Song Yu ask for leave for you at school. Your stitches will be removed in three days. The doctor will tell you what to pay attention to later.”
“Your mom will come to take care of you in a while.”
Song Bei’s instructions were meticulous. Xu Liangchen frowned as she listened and casually asked, “Do you have something to do?”
Song Bei touched her fringe. “What? Do you want me to stay with you?”
Xu Liangchen didn’t say anything. Of course, that wasn’t what she meant. This Song Bei’s ability to misinterpret people was a step above hers.
Song Bei saw that she wasn’t talking and then explained, “I have to go abroad for a while. I’ll be back in about three to five days. I’ll come find you when I get back.”
This time, Xu Liangchen didn’t push Song Bei’s hand away. Instead, she said a little irritably, “When you come back, I’ll take you to meet someone.”
She thought it was time to let Mu Nan and Song Bei meet.
Song Bei didn’t ask who she was going to meet this time. She just nodded obediently. “Okay. Then when I get back, I’ll also take you to meet someone.”
The room was very quiet. Song Bei saw that Xu Liangchen didn’t have much of an appetite, so she didn’t force her. After she finished eating and tidied up, she left, and she didn’t come back.
At a little past nine in the morning, Ye Jin rushed to the hospital. She looked flustered and was carrying a bag full of clothes.
She had received a message last night saying that Chenchen had gone to a classmate’s house after running into some trouble. She thought Xu An had returned and run into Chenchen, and Chenchen was so scared that she hid at a classmate’s house. She had been relieved, but then she got another call this morning, telling her to come to the hospital to take care of her.
She didn’t care about work and rushed over after taking some time off.
She pushed the door open. Xu Liangchen was leaning against the head of the bed, looking at the scenery outside the hospital, her expression normal. Ye Jin’s heart eased a little, and she quickly walked over. “Chenchen, what’s wrong? What happened?”
Xu Liangchen turned her head at the sound. She saw that the bruises on Ye Jin’s face hadn’t healed yet, and she looked distressed and anxious. She quickly said, “It’s nothing. I just ran into a few hooligans yesterday.”
Ye Jin’s heart was pounding. She quickly looked her up and down, but she couldn’t see any injuries from the outside.
“Did anything… happen?”
Ye Jin’s question was subtle, and Xu Liangchen naturally understood. Ever since Xu An had caused Xu Liangchen to jump off the building, Ye Jin had always avoided these questions. Now, she was probably forced to ask.
Xu Liangchen shook her head. “No. I ran into a friend.”
She briefly explained the situation, and only then did Ye Jin truly let out a sigh of relief. She sat down on a chair, her tone melancholic. “Chenchen, I’m sorry.”
Xu Liangchen took Ye Jin’s hand. “It’s nothing. Don’t overthink it.”
When the doctor came to change Xu Liangchen’s dressing at noon, she asked Ye Jin to also go and have her facial wounds treated. The doctor glanced at Ye Jin and took her out.
Xu Liangchen stayed in the hospital for two days, and it was peaceful. She was waited on for food and drinks and rarely got out of bed. She would often stare at the scenery outside, wondering what Mu Nan was doing.
Mu Nan was actually doing nothing, just like her.
Two days ago, Song Yu had suddenly asked for leave for Xu Liangchen, saying she had some family matters. Then Xu Liangchen’s mom also came to the school, and then Xu Liangchen disappeared for two days.
She really didn’t want to think about whether Xu Liangchen was with Song Bei.
But the facts were right in front of her, and she couldn’t help but think about it.
The seat beside her was empty. It had only been two days, but she missed her so much. She wondered what she was doing, whether she was with Song Bei.
The more she missed the Xu Liangchen who was so good to her in the past, the more she wanted to know if she was currently with someone else, being so good to them, and why she wasn’t in school.
After class on Thursday, Mu Nan returned home and received a call from Chen Jiao. They made plans to have a farewell dinner on the weekend, and she told Mu Nan not to forget to bring Xu Liangchen.
Mu Nan no longer cared about their cold war. She hung up the phone and ran straight to Xu Liangchen’s doorstep.
The house was tightly shut, with no light coming out. Mu Nan knocked on the door for a long time, but there was no response. She sat down dejectedly in front of her house, and she sat there until the evening.
Xu Liangchen had her stitches removed very late. Ye Jin wanted her to stay for another night, but Xu Liangchen was inexplicably annoyed and shook her head. “Go pack our things. We’re going home soon.”
Ye Jin couldn’t argue with Xu Liangchen, so she had to nod and go pay the hospital fees. When she got to the cashier, the nurse told her that everything had been settled. Ye Jin was a little confused. She hadn’t paid anything since she arrived.
She quickly followed after the nurse and asked who had paid. The nurse gave her a name.
But she didn’t know the name.
Who was Song Bei?
Could it be the friend Chenchen mentioned?
Why would she be so good to Chenchen?
Ye Jin was a little confused, but she didn’t dare to go back and ask Xu Liangchen. She was a little afraid of the current Chenchen, so she didn’t even dare to ask about these big things.
Xu Liangchen saw that she looked distraught when she came back and didn’t say anything. She just handed her the packed bags. “Let’s go.”
Ye Jin nodded and followed her.
When they were about to reach the front door, they saw someone sitting there. Xu Liangchen saw the person, quickly walked over, and pulled her up.
“What are you doing?”
Xu Liangchen’s tone was not good, suppressing her anger. Mu Nan was so oblivious to the dangers of the world!
Was she going to wait in front of her house like this? If she hadn’t come back, was she planning on staying all night?
When Mu Nan saw Xu Liangchen come back, with Ye Jin following behind her, her tone was flustered. “I’m sorry… I just wanted to know what happened to you.”
Xu Liangchen saw that her face had been turned pale by the wind. No matter how much anger she had, she couldn’t express it. She took out her key, opened the door, and said in a cold voice, “Get inside!”
Mu Nan walked in, feeling a little wronged, her nose stinging.
Ye Jin also walked in and said to Mu Nan, “Classmate, are you cold? I’ll make you a bowl of noodles.”
Xu Liangchen didn’t say anything, and Mu Nan didn’t dare to respond, still keeping her head down. In the end, Xu Liangchen compromised. “Mom, you don’t have to bother. Mu Nan and I are going to talk in my room for a bit. You should go back and rest.”
It was just after eight o’clock, so it was still too early to rest, but Ye Jin didn’t argue with Xu Liangchen. She nodded. “Okay, I’ll go back to my room.”
Xu Liangchen hummed in response and pulled Mu Nan’s arm, leading her into her room.
As soon as they got into the room, Xu Liangchen took out the heater and aimed it at Mu Nan. Her tone was much calmer. “What’s wrong?”
Mu Nan’s voice was choked up. She looked at her with teary, blurry eyes. “Can’t I come find you even if nothing’s wrong?! Xu Liangchen, do you really hate me that much!?”
She had been in the cold wind for a while, so her voice was a little hoarse, her face was pale, and her eyes were red. She looked at her stubbornly like that.
Xu Liangchen suppressed her emotions and sat on the bed. “I don’t hate you. You were so… What if I didn’t come back tonight?”
The thought of not coming back for the past two nights and what if Mu Nan had been sitting in front of her door waiting for her made her feel very irritated, as if a hand was tightly gripping her heart, making it ache.
Mu Nan’s tone was sullen. “Where would you go if you didn’t come back? Are you going to see Song Bei?”
No one else knew about her injury, so Mu Nan naturally didn’t know.
Xu Liangchen didn’t say anything. She just threw a towel at her. “Wipe your face. I’ll take you home.”
Mu Nan bit her lip. The grievances she had just suppressed all came rushing back. She held the towel and cried uncontrollably, her shoulders shaking violently.
Xu Liangchen’s heart ached. She walked to her side and placed a hand on her shoulder. “There’s nothing going on between me and Song Bei. Don’t overthink it.”
Mu Nan couldn’t hear Xu Liangchen’s words at all. Her face was still buried in the towel.
Xu Liangchen had no choice but to bend down and pull the towel away. Mu Nan’s face, rubbed raw by the towel, was flushed. She said between sobs, “Xu Liangchen, please don’t like Song Bei, okay?”
She looked up. The light shone on her face. Although she looked distressed, she also looked a little delicate, especially with those wet eyes looking at her.
Xu Liangchen bit her lip. “I don’t like Song Bei.”
Mu Nan’s eyes lit up a little. “Then can we make up?”
This time, Xu Liangchen didn’t say anything. She turned and looked at Mu Nan again. “Mu Nan, I want to take you to meet someone.”
That person is the one who will truly bring you happiness.
I don’t have the ability to do that.
