Wife, I’ve Been Reborn (GL) - Chapter 8
Chapter 8
Late-Night Study and a Distraction
It was the old fuddy-duddy teacher on duty for evening self-study. He sat at the podium, wearing his glasses and grading assignments, occasionally glancing with his sharp eyes to see if they were making any small moves. Mu Nan had never attended evening self-study before; this was her first time, like a young bride in a sedan chair, and she couldn’t help but be excited. She frequently sat up straight, whispering to Xiao Xin behind her, even holding her book high to block the old fuddy-duddy’s view. The old fuddy-duddy’s eyes circled around her several times. His lips twitched, as if he was ready to tell her to stand up the moment she made any move. Overly active students always caught the teacher’s attention, and Mu Nan was a prime example.
Xu Liangchen looked up from her book, saw the old fuddy-duddy’s expression, and seriously told the person beside her, “You should be more discreet.” Mu Nan stopped passing the note. Her expression also became very serious, as if she was discussing some topic with Xu Liangchen. “What’s wrong?” Xu Liangchen shook her head, holding her book. “You’re disturbing me.”
Mu Nan’s mouth twitched. Disturbing her? She glanced at Xu Liangchen’s desk; a novel was clearly laid out. “Am I disturbing your reading?” Xu Liangchen looked at her with her phoenix eyes, her gaze deepening. “Otherwise?” “Or I could tell the teacher…” Mu Nan quickly grabbed Xu Liangchen’s arm. “Oh no, please don’t! My mistake, my mistake!” Xu Liangchen uncomfortably pulled away from her arm, her expression full of indifference.
Mu Nan was considerably reined in by Xu Liangchen’s threat. The range of her note-passing with Chen Jiao became smaller. She no longer dared to whisper to the person behind her, instead sprawling over her desk and taking out her math homework.
…
A Stubborn Learner and a “Prince Charming”
“Xu Liangchen.” She always drew out the last syllable of Xu Liangchen’s name; it was her unique way of calling people.
“Hmm?” Mu Nan saw Xu Liangchen respond and quickly presented her homework book. “I don’t know this one. Can you teach me?” She looked at her with pitiful eyes. Xu Liangchen tilted her head, looked at her for a long moment, and then replied, “No.”
“Stingy!” Mu Nan cursed under her breath. As soon as she took back her homework book, she saw Xu Liangchen’s homework being handed to her. She quickly took it with both hands. “Thank you for your immense favor!” Xu Liangchen couldn’t hide the smile in her eyes from what Mu Nan said, a curve always on her lips. She rarely smiled. When Mu Nan saw her smile, her heart skipped a beat, and she quickly looked away. Beauties really can bewitch people!
Mu Nan opened Xu Liangchen’s homework book. It not only had the answers but also neat explanations, the handwriting tidy and elegant, as if written by a calligrapher. Just like her, it was exquisitely beautiful. As she was admiring the double beauty, a small crumpled paper ball was thrown from the front, landing squarely on her open homework. She looked up and saw the old fuddy-duddy diligently writing, head down. And Zhao Shi, looking at her expectantly. Mu Nan refocused. She was puzzled. Was there something wrong with this Zhao Shi? How long had they known each each other, yet he kept seeking her out? Love at first sight shouldn’t be this fast! Moreover, she had never seen such proactive “love at first sight.” Why were the transfer students this time stranger than the last? Could they not just behave normally?!
She was creeped out by Zhao Shi’s gaze but still opened the note. A long message appeared before her. To summarize, it said he found her pure and unpretentious, unlike the “seductively cheap women” outside, and he really liked her. He also asked her to meet him outside school after class. Mu Nan’s mouth twitched again. Could this be considered a love letter?
Xu Liangchen tilted her head and saw Mu Nan staring blankly at the note. The chill in her phoenix eyes deepened, her gaze firmly fixed on Zhao Shi. She would not forget the harm that scoundrel had caused Mu Nan. If not for him, she wouldn’t have transferred from No. 1 High School to No. 3 High School. Xu Liangchen’s gaze shifted from the note to Mu Nan, much of her imposing aura fading, her eyes seeming gentle. But, transferring here also turned out well. From that perspective, she was quite grateful to that scoundrel.
Mu Nan thought for a while and replied, “Sorry, I can’t make it.”
Zhao Shi replied even more pitifully, “I’ll be waiting for you.”
Waiting for my sister, you mean! Did I even agree to this?!
Mu Nan thought back to her few interactions with Zhao Shi. When had she ever given him a wrong signal to make him think she should accept him? Just as she was engrossed in thought, the bell rang, interrupting her. She saw Zhao Shi stand up and quickly called out, “Zhao Shi!” Zhao Shi, surrounded by a group of classmates, smiled at her and mouthed, “Waiting for you!”
Waiting for my foot! Mu Nan saw too many classmates around and found it inconvenient to say anything, so she simply ran to Chen Jiao’s side.
…
The Revelation and a Familiar Journey
“Hey, tell me honestly, did Zhao Shi give you any benefits?” Chen Jiao was currently lost in a romance novel and looked up blankly at Mu Nan’s question. “What’s wrong?” Mu Nan told her about Zhao Shi. Chen Jiao’s expression flickered, looking a bit uncomfortable. “Actually… I think Zhao Shi is pretty good!” Mu Nan tilted her head, looking at Chen Jiao, who seemed hesitant to speak, feeling very puzzled. “You just met him, didn’t you?” Chen Jiao nodded. “Yes, we just met, but I really think he’s good!” Then she looked at Mu Nan. “Especially to you!”
Mu Nan was truly bewildered by this. Had she suffered from amnesia? And forgotten Zhao Shi? Impossible!
Chen Jiao saw Mu Nan’s complicated expression and no longer concealed anything, fully revealing what Zhao Shi had told her. After listening to Chen Jiao’s story, Mu Nan mumbled, “So, I’m that girl?” Chen Jiao nodded. “He spent over a year looking for you, how difficult is that!”
However, Mu Nan only found it incredible. How could she not remember such a thing? According to Chen Jiao’s version, it was during an incident in a park where Zhao Shi lost his student ID, and she found and returned it. Later, Zhao Shi frequently visited that park and even ran into her once or twice. Who knew, later he never encountered her again. Zhao Shi didn’t even have time to ask her name. Later, he accidentally learned she was a student at No. 3 High School. So, he transferred from No. 1 High School to No. 3 High School, despite his family’s objections. Mu Nan racked her brain, but she genuinely couldn’t remember this incident. She didn’t even know where the park Zhao Shi mentioned was.
Chen Jiao was still engrossed in the idea that Zhao Shi was a great lover, even telling Mu Nan to treat him well, and if she truly didn’t like him, to refuse gently. If a boy were like that to her, and so handsome too, damn, she’d pounce on him in a minute!
Mu Nan was too lazy to continue talking to Chen Jiao. She returned to her seat, still wondering if she had really met Zhao Shi. Okay, her memory wasn’t great. Maybe she really had met him. Then it was even more necessary to make things clear.
Xu Liangchen saw her expression and knew what she was thinking. Halfway through self-study, she asked, “Do you live in the East District?” Mu Nan looked into her phoenix eyes and nodded.
“It’s on my way. Let’s go back together after school.” With that, she lowered her head and continued reading, not bothering to wait for Mu Nan’s agreement. She used to feel like time was never enough, but now with plenty of time, she didn’t know how to pass it. She had read her book over and over many times. She was a fast reader, so after finishing, her mind would unconsciously start wandering to other things. Recently, she often wondered: If Mu Nan were to see the real her, what kind of expression would she have? Would she, like in the previous life… recognize her at first sight, regardless of gender?
