Chapter 10: Insulting the Beasts
The Marquis glared at Yu Junshu, “I am the head of this family. Do I need your permission to bring someone back?”
Yu Junshu had always known that his father was unreliable. Throughout his life, he had suffered quite a bit because of the Marquis’ actions.
Though intelligent, Yu Junshu was often forced to endure his father’s whims because the Marquis was his biological father.
Lowering his gaze, Yu Junshu said, “I wouldn’t dare.”
“You better not,” the Marquis said arrogantly, hands on his hips. “This here is Concubine Qin.”
Yu Junshu was taken aback. “Concubine Qin?”
The Marquis was notorious for his lustful nature. He already had several concubines in the residence, but none with the surname Qin.
Madam Zheng, however, was quite formidable. Despite the other concubines having been in the household for years, none had borne children.
Although they had been pregnant before, for various reasons, they all miscarried.
As a result, only Madam Zheng’s children survived.
Madam Zheng had given birth to a son and a daughter. The son was Yu Junshu, and the daughter, Yu Xinyue, was currently visiting relatives and was not in the residence.
The Marquis glanced at him and said, “That’s right. This is Concubine Qin. She hasn’t lived in the residence before.”
Yu Junshu quickly understood. Concubine Qin was his father’s mistress from outside the residence, and the young boy’s identity was now obvious.
His face darkened, and he coldly said, “Whether she can become concubine or not, I’m afraid that still requires Mother’s approval.”
The Marquis was somewhat afraid of Madam Zheng, but he still had his pride. He had already boasted in front of Concubine Qin, so there was no backing down now.
With a stern expression, he said, “If your mother dares not agree, I’ll… I’ll divorce her!”
After saying this, he led Concubine Qin and the young boy into Madam Zheng’s room.
Yu Junshu’s face turned extremely grim, and his heart burned with anger.
He had long known his father was irresponsible, but each time, he still managed to push Yu Junshu’s limits.
Just then, he heard Madam Zheng’s sharp voice ring out, “Yu Jibei, you scoundrel!”
Yu Jibei was the Marquis’ name.
The room was soon filled with chaos, with shouting and yelling echoing through the halls.
Yu Junshu clenched his fists, his face pale with frustration.
He knew that although his father was completely unreliable, he was still the head of the family.
Once the Marquis brought people into the household, there was no turning back.
As powerful as Madam Zheng was, in a society where women were expected to obey their husbands, even she had to compromise.
Yu Junshu took a deep breath. Avoiding the conflict between his parents, he turned and left to fetch Zhao Yan’er and bring her back to the residence.
After taking her medicine, Madam Zheng had been feeling a little better, but now, angered by the Marquis, her condition worsened, and she began vomiting and having diarrhea again.
Although the Marquis and Madam Zheng had been married for many years, their relationship wasn’t good. Seeing her in this state disgusted him.
Pinching his nose, he said, “It’s settled. In a few days, I’ll gather the elders to officially register Xiu’er’s name in the family genealogy.”
Without waiting for Madam Zheng to respond, he grabbed Concubine Qin and the boy by the hand and walked out.
At this point, Madam Zheng was so furious she couldn’t speak. Her eyes rolled back, and she fainted on the spot.
The room erupted into chaos again.
The Marquis couldn’t care less about Madam Zheng and quickened his pace with Concubine Qin in tow.
Once outside,Concubine Qin softly said, “My lord, are we really leaving like this?”
The Marquis said indifferently, “Don’t worry about her. That woman is tough as nails.”
“She has people attending to her, and we aren’t doctors. We can’t even help if we stay.”
Concubine Qin timidly responded, “But…”
“No buts,” the Marquis interrupted her. “I’ve ordered someone to prepare a courtyard for you. Take Xiu’er and go rest for now.”
Over the years, his resentment toward Madam Zheng had grown deep. Any remnants of affection between them had long faded, leaving only hatred.
Not only did he not care for her anymore, he wished she would die soon, so she’d stop controlling him.
Concubine Qin softly replied, and her bright eyes shone with admiration as she gazed at the Marquis. “My lord, you’re so kind to us.”
Compared to the fierce and domineering Madam Zheng, Concubine Qin was gentle and soft. Her adoring and reverent gaze made the Marquis feel deeply flattered.
Patting his chest, he said, “Don’t worry. As long as I’m here, no one in this marquisate can bully you!”
The admiration in Concubine Qin’s eyes grew stronger, and the Marquis puffed out his chest even more proudly.
Meanwhile, Li Qiu informed Lan Qingxi of everything she had heard about Madam Zheng, concluding with, “I never would’ve guessed that the Marquis kept a mistress outside.”
“That mistress’s son is already ten years old, only three years younger than the heir!”
Lan Qingxi smiled slightly at this. “Indeed, the heir will no longer be the only son of the marquisate.”
In her previous life, Concubine Qin and her son had entered the household much later, nearly half a year after now. When they returned to the estate, they had immediately aggravated Madam Zheng, causing her to fall ill.
Despite Concubine Qin’s frail appearance, she was skilled in the art of household conflict, and with the Marquis backing her, Madam Zheng was furious but helpless.
At the time, Yu Junshu had often come to Lan Qingxi, lamenting his frustrations, and she had helped Madam Zheng deal with Concubine Qin. Concubine Qin had suffered numerous setbacks at her hands.
But when she was nearing death, Concubine Qin had been the only person in the household to bring her medicine and food.
Lan Qingxi still remembered the look in Concubine Qin’s eyes at the time. “We are both pitiable. Why make things harder for each other?”
It was because of this statement that, after being reborn, Lan Qingxi decided to cooperate with Concubine Qin this time.
They would not be enemies in this life.
The poison Lan Qingxi had given Madam Zheng was such that her illness would worsen every time she got angry. She could already imagine that Madam Zheng would no longer have any dignity in her future life.
After all, Concubine Qin had a knack for infuriating people, and Madam Zheng would likely spend the rest of her life buried in filth.
Lan Qingxi said to Li Qiu, “Since Concubine Qin has just entered the household, she’s unfamiliar with the people and customs here. Find an opportunity to give her this booklet.”
The booklet detailed the relationships, preferences, and personalities of the people in the marquisate, so that Concubine Qin could quickly integrate into the household without falling into traps or being deceived.
Although Li Qiu didn’t understand why Lan Qingxi was doing this, she obeyed without question.
As Li Qiu was about to leave, Lan Qingxi added, “Wait, there’s no need to rush this.”
“If I’m not mistaken, Madam Zheng will make her move in the next few days. Wait until Concubine Qin suffers a setback before handing it over.”
Since Concubine Qin was new to the marquisate, she didn’t yet know how treacherous the waters were. After she experienced some hardship, it would be easier to establish cooperation between them.
For now, Lan Qingxi needed to maintain a low profile.
At that moment, a commotion could be heard outside, mixed with the sound of a woman crying.
Lan Qingxi sent Li Qiu to investigate. After a short while, Li Qiu returned, eyes red with anger.
Lan Qingxi asked, “What happened?”
