Chapter 12: Let’s Divorce!
When Lan Qingxi returned to her room and was about to close the door, Yu Junshu chased after her. He stuck his foot in the door and pleaded, “Qingxi, please listen to my explanation!”
Lan Qingxi looked at him with tearful eyes and said, “Taking a concubine just a month after marrying your wife—it’s rare even in the countryside, let alone in the capital.”
“You told me yesterday that you were deeply in love with me. But now I see that your so-called deep love isn’t much at all.”
“I’m more inclined to believe what Prime Minister Song said: that I was nothing more than a stepping stone for your promotion, someone you were willing to give away.”
Yu Junshu’s forehead twitched. It was only then that he realized Song Linyuan had told Lan Qingxi everything.
He instinctively denied it, “That’s not true!”
Lan Qingxi raised her voice, “If it’s not true, then what is? That woman has already entered the household, and you’re still lying to my face?”
Yu Junshu quickly made up a story, “She’s my distant cousin. Both her parents have passed away, and she has nowhere to go. I just brought her here to stay for a while. I’m not taking her as a concubine.”
Lan Qingxi let out a cold laugh. “If that’s the case, why did you arrange for her to live in Qiulan Courtyard, the best one after the main house?”
“I saw the way you held her earlier. You’ve studied the classics and should know that men and women are not to touch each other unless married.”
“I can’t trust you anymore. Given everything that’s happened, let’s get a divorce!”
After saying that, she slammed the door hard, catching Yu Junshu’s foot. He jumped in pain, and she took the chance to close the door.
Yu Junshu was both angry and hurt, the veins on his forehead throbbing.
He realized that bringing Zhao Yan’er into the household had reignited Lan Qingxi’s suspicions, just when he had finally managed to appease her. Admittedly, this wasn’t the right time to bring Zhao Yan’er in.
However, people from Prince Chen’s household were already looking for Zhao Yan’er, and if he didn’t bring her into the marquisate, it would have been too late.
Knowing he couldn’t leave things as they were, Yu Junshu knocked on the door again, saying, “Qingxi, Yan’er really is just my cousin.”
“I protected her because of the feud between our families—my mother and her family have always been at odds. They’ve taken their anger out on her.”
“I only felt sorry for her and wanted to give her a place to stay. There’s nothing more to it.”
Inside the room, after locking the door, Lan Qingxi sat down at the table, leaning back in her chair to rest.
She hadn’t slept all night and had already gone through an emotional ordeal that day, even contemplating death at one point. She was exhausted.
Seeing her sit down, Li Qiu quickly came over to massage her shoulders. Lan Qingxi yawned, watching as Yu Junshu continued his performance outside.
No matter what Yu Junshu said, she couldn’t be bothered to respond. Talking took too much energy.
Yu Junshu kept making excuses, trying to find all kinds of reasons to justify himself, professing that his love for Lan Qingxi was deeper than the sky and wider than the sea.
Lan Qingxi listened, her eyes full of sarcasm. This man was still exceptionally skilled at deceiving women.
Had she not already known what kind of person he was, she might have believed him.
She propped her head up with one hand, reminiscing about the events of their past life together. Yawning again, she decided to go to bed.
Yu Junshu continued his sweet talk, but when he got no response from her, he sighed and said, “Qingxi, my love for you is genuine.”
“I’ve said everything I can. I will absolutely not divorce you. Calm down, and I’ll come back to see you later.”
By the time he said this, Lan Qingxi had already fallen asleep.
When she woke up, it was evening, and the kitchen steward personally delivered her meal. “The Young Master ordered the kitchen to prepare all your favorite dishes, Madam.”
Lan Qingxi glanced at the meal: steamed bass, braised prawns, water chestnut meatballs, and spinach and silver fish soup.
These were all dishes from her hometown, all of her favorites.
In her previous life, seeing these would have made her incredibly happy. But now, she could only find them deeply ironic.
In the past, she had done everything to please him, yet he had never instructed the kitchen to prepare even one dish she loved.
And since Madam Zheng had an allergy to shrimp, the marquisate had never bought any. Today’s meal must have been specifically requested by Yu Junshu.
So, the louder the fuss she made, the more benefits she could secure for herself?
Lan Qingxi felt a bit hungry. The food wasn’t at fault; she wouldn’t waste it. She sat down to eat.
The steward commented, “The Young Master truly treats the Madam exceptionally well. I’ve never seen a man show such concern for his wife.”
Lan Qingxi understood that Yu Junshu could not divorce her at this moment, so to ensure a better life in the marquisate, she needed to navigate her feelings carefully.
She had to maintain an appropriate distance, keeping her attitude toward him measured and somewhat aloof.
She replied softly, “The Young Master is very thoughtful.”
Seeing her expression soften, the steward felt relieved that he could report back to Yu Junshu and withdrew.
Li Qiu whispered, “Miss, don’t be fooled. After leaving you, the Young Master must be settling Zhao Yan’er in.”
“He’s probably with her right now.”
Lan Qingxi responded calmly, “I know. It doesn’t matter where he is; what matters is that we can enjoy good food now.”
After marrying into the marquisate, her life hadn’t been terrible, but it hadn’t been good either.
The household servants served meals according to the main dishes, and as she had just married in, not controlling the kitchen, she didn’t lack for food, but it was hard to find meals she liked.
Li Qiu immediately understood her meaning and smiled, “You’re right, Miss!”
After leaving Lan Qingxi, the steward sought out Yu Junshu.
At this moment, Yu Junshu had just calmed Zhao Yan’er down and sighed with relief upon hearing that Lan Qingxi’s anger had mostly dissipated.
He was extremely tired today and was preparing to rest when Nanny Zhang came over. “Young Master, Madam Zheng is unwell again.”
Yu Junshu, feeling overwhelmed, realized he had to attend to Madam Zheng.
Just when he thought things were settling down, that evening, Dao Shisan arrived at the marquisate, saying Song Linyuan wanted to see Lan Qingxi.
Hearing this, Yu Junshu felt a headache coming on. He hadn’t fully placated Lan Qingxi yet, and now he had to send her to Song Linyuan. She would surely make a scene.
Song Linyuan was unpredictable; after having established a connection with him, Yu Junshu couldn’t afford to offend him.
He smiled at Dao Shisan, saying, “My wife has been unwell since yesterday; she probably can’t meet the Prime Minister right now.”
“Please tell the Prime Minister that I’ll bring her over in a few days.”
Dao Shisan looked at him sideways. “The Prime Minister sent me to pick someone up; I’ll take her as soon as I find her.”
“If the Young Master is inconvenient to bring the Madam, I’ll do it myself.”
Yu Junshu couldn’t allow that. He hurriedly said, “I wouldn’t dare trouble you, I’ll take care of it myself.”
Dao Shisan replied calmly, “Then make it quick. The Prime Minister expects me to bring the Madam within the hour.
“It’s already been nearly half an hour. It takes at least fifteen minutes to walk from the marquisate to the Prime Minister’s residence. If we miss the time, the Prime Minister might get angry.”
Yu Junshu felt a pang of anxiety but had no choice but to grit his teeth and go find Lan Qingxi, desperately trying to think of how to convince her.
