Chapter 20: Writing the Concubine Letter for Him
As expected, Zhao Yan’er didn’t follow Yu Junshu’s orders and directly came to Lan Qingxi, seeking to become his concubine.
This situation was completely different from the past life, and the development of events had taken a very interesting turn.
Lan Qingxi knew it was because of the different attitude she displayed after returning to the mansion this time.
In her past life, she had been humble, constantly trying to win Yu Junshu’s favor. She was in a daze for days, giving Yu Junshu plenty of time to woo Zhao Yan’er.
Now, it was Yu Junshu trying to win her over, hoping she would assist him in front of Song Linyuan. His focus had shifted to her, and he was neglecting Zhao Yan’er.
Zhao Yan’er, being ambitious and sensitive, quickly noticed Yu Junshu’s changing attitude and couldn’t sit still.
Zhao Yan’er might never understand just how much she had lost by coming to confront Lan Qingxi today.
After listening to Lan Qingxi’s explanation, Li Qiu suddenly realized, “So, this way, Miss, you can gain a reputation for being magnanimous in the capital.”
Lan Qingxi replied calmly, “Not necessarily, but it might at least earn me some sympathy.”
With Song Linyuan’s support, her reputation wouldn’t fall too far.
In the eyes of others, she was probably someone who had suffered greatly at the hands of the Marquis’s family.
Li Qiu said softly, “I still feel it’s unfair to you, Miss.”
Lan Qingxi smiled gently, “It doesn’t matter. We’ll take things slowly. Zhao Yan’er making her move today is actually to my great advantage.”
“If we still can’t leave the Marquis’s household, then we must position ourselves in the most advantageous way possible.”
She had no feelings left for Yu Junshu, so such matters no longer hurt her.
What she wanted was to maximize her benefits and make those who had wronged her in her past life pay dearly!
In the evening, as soon as Yu Junshu returned to the mansion, Zhao Yan’er, with her face swollen like a pig’s head, hurried to greet him.
Seeing her like this, Yu Junshu was shocked and asked, “What happened to you?”
Then he turned and scolded the maid Ying’er, who was serving Zhao Yan’er. “How could you take care of Miss Zhao so poorly?”
When Zhao Yan’er had first entered the mansion, she hadn’t brought any maids with her, so Ying’er was assigned by Yu Junshu to attend to her.
Frightened, Ying’er immediately knelt on the ground and said, “Please forgive me, Young Master!”
Zhao Yan’er had heard about the importance of personal maids in large households and saw this as the perfect opportunity to win Ying’er over.
She stepped in front of Ying’er and said, “Brother Jun, it’s not Ying’er’s fault. It’s because I was reckless and angered Sister-in-law.”
Yu Junshu frowned, his voice stern, “You went to see Qingxi? Who told you to do that?”
Seeing his reaction, Zhao Yan’er grew even more certain that Yu Junshu was deeply in love with Lan Qingxi, which only made her more jealous.
With red-rimmed eyes, she explained, “I didn’t seek her out on purpose. I was just taking a walk in the garden and happened to bump into Sister-in-law, so I spoke a few words with her.”
Yu Junshu had been with Zhao Yan’er for years, so how could he not know what kind of person she was?
This “chance encounter” was undoubtedly her deliberately cornering Lan Qingxi.
With a dark expression, he asked, “What did you say to her?”
Zhao Yan’er, scared by his tone, tried to downplay the situation and recounted the events of the morning.
She focused on expressing her deep love for him and portrayed Lan Qingxi as unreasonable and domineering, while painting herself as humble and willing to compromise.
But even though she tried to gloss over it, Yu Junshu’s frown deepened, and his expression grew darker.
“So, you forced Qingxi to agree to let you become my concubine?” he asked.
Zhao Yan’er looked at his gloomy face and felt a little panicked.
She hurriedly said, “How could I dare to force Sister-in-law? It’s just that I love you so much, Brother Jun, that I couldn’t help but express my feelings when I spoke with her.”
“For me, as long as I can be by your side, even without a proper title, I’m willing.”
Yu Junshu coldly replied, “Do you remember what I told you before? I brought you into the mansion to make you my future wife, not a concubine!”
Zhao Yan’er, teary-eyed, said, “Of course I remember those words. But I can’t compare to Sister-in-law in terms of looks or family background.”
“You love her so deeply, Brother Jun. Even when she makes mistakes, you always forgive her.”
Hearing this, Yu Junshu felt his head about to explode. He glared at her and asked, “What mistake did she make? Who has been feeding you this nonsense?”
His gaze fell on Ying’er, the maid. Terrified, Ying’er knelt and quickly explained, “Miss Zhao asked me about it. I didn’t dare not answer!”
Yu Junshu, unable to direct his anger toward Zhao Yan’er, turned all his fury onto Ying’er.
He said coldly, “Ying’er, for stirring up trouble and slandering your mistress, take her away and have her beaten to death.”
Ying’er turned pale and begged for mercy, “Young Master, please spare my life…”
But before she could finish, Yu Junshu’s guards covered her mouth and dragged her away.
Zhao Yan’er, having grown up in the countryside, had never witnessed such a scene. Her face went pale with fear.
For the first time, she realized that Yu Junshu wasn’t exactly the man she remembered.
Yu Junshu cursed her silently for being a fool. After this whole mess, she would now only be able to become his concubine, making it impossible for him to gain favor with Prince Chen.
However, he couldn’t express this in front of Zhao Yan’er.
He quickly switched back to his usual gentle and caring demeanor. “It’s my fault for choosing a maid who caused you trouble.”
“Go and rest now. I’ll find another maid to serve you later.”
Zhao Yan’er quickly agreed and hurried back to her quarters.
As Yu Junshu watched her walk away, her gait was rough and ungraceful, like a common country girl. There wasn’t a hint of the dignity of a marquis’s wife in her.
For the first time, he began to doubt whether bringing her into the mansion to make her his wife was the right decision.
He let out a long breath and decided to go soothe Lan Qingxi.
On the way to Zhao Yan’er’s room, she saw guards carrying a body wrapped in a mat, the cloth stained with fresh blood.
The mat didn’t fully cover the body, and she caught a glimpse of pants embroidered with the spring flower pattern she had seen on Ying’er’s trousers.
Her face turned white with fear, and she ran to her room, slammed the door shut, and leaned against it, panting.
For the first time, she had witnessed a living person die right in front of her in a matter of moments.
Her legs felt weak, and she collapsed to the ground.
When Yu Junshu arrived at Lan Qingxi’s room, she was sitting at her desk, writing something.
By now, night had fallen, and the room was illuminated by soft, warm light, casting a gentle and intelligent glow on her.
Having just seen the crude Zhao Yan’er, then looking at the elegant Lan Qingxi, the stark contrast between the two made him doubt his previous choices once again.
Yu Junshu walked over to her and asked, “What are you writing?”
Lan Qingxi calmly replied, “I’m writing the concubine letter for you, my lord.”
In noble families like theirs in the capital, it was customary for the main wife to write a letter when accepting a concubine.
