Chapter 26: Just Asking if Your Face Hurts or Not
Madam Zheng said coldly, “You don’t need to care about him. Just follow my instructions and get the money.”
Lan Qingxi looked at Madam Zheng with innocent eyes and said, “But Mother has always said that a woman should regard her husband as her heaven after marriage.”
“If Mother disregards the Marquis’s thoughts and opinions, does that mean I can also learn from Mother and stop caring about the affairs of the heir?”
Madam Zheng, furious, replied, “Of course not!”
Lan Qingxi then asked, “Why can Mother do it, but I can’t? Does that mean the logic in Mother’s words depends on who it’s directed at?”
Madam Zheng: “…”
She was rendered speechless, unable to come up with a rebuttal.
At that moment, she realized Lan Qingxi was using her own logic against her.
Madam Zheng slammed the table and said, “Who taught you to talk to me like this?”
Lan Qingxi looked confused. “What did I say? Aren’t these all Mother’s original words?”
Madam Zheng: “…”
The fact that they were her own words made her even angrier.
Clenching her teeth, she said, “The heir and the Marquis are different. You cannot measure the heir by the same standards.”
Lan Qingxi nodded. “You’re right, they are different. I’ve heard that after Mother married the Marquis, he took a concubine three years later.”
“But after I married the heir, he took a concubine within a month.”
The implication was clear: compared to the Marquis, Yu Junshu was even worse.
If the Marquis was a scoundrel, then Yu Junshu was the scoundrel of scoundrels.
Madam Zheng: “!!!!”
For the first time, she realized Lan Qingxi had such a sharp tongue.
Angrily, she said, “I’ve treated you like my own daughter, and this is how you talk back to me?”
Lan Qingxi asked in shock, “Mother, could you please tell me which sentence of mine was talking back? Point it out, and I’ll change!”
Her tone was nothing but polite, but it drove Madam Zheng’s blood pressure through the roof.
Madam Zheng realized that if this continued, she might embarrass herself in front of Lan Qingxi again.
Pointing at the door, she shouted, “Get out!”
Lan Qingxi promptly left.
As she stepped out of the door, she once again caught a whiff of that intoxicating scent.
The corners of her lips curled slightly. She knew all too well Madam Zheng’s methods—they boiled down to shamelessness.
Using Madam Zheng’s shamelessness against her own shamelessness usually worked wonders.
The poison she had administered to Madam Zheng would flare up every time Madam Zheng got angry, causing her body more harm each time.
At Madam Zheng’s current rate of anger, she probably didn’t have many years left to live.
And in the later stages, Madam Zheng’s life would be exceedingly painful.
Lan Qingxi could write Yu Junshu a letter granting him permission to take a concubine, but expecting her to pay for Zhao Yan’er to become his concubine?
Dream on!
When Yu Junshu returned in the evening and heard that Madam Zheng had fallen ill again, and then learned about the day’s events in the manor, he felt a massive headache coming on!
He couldn’t understand why Lan Qingxi, who had agreed to everything earlier, had suddenly changed her stance. He was truly at a loss.
Fuming, he went to find Lan Qingxi and demanded, “What do you mean by this?”
Lan Qingxi didn’t answer but asked in return, “Shouldn’t I be the one asking the heir what he means by this?”

Yu Junshu looked at her coldly and said, “I know you’re upset with me because of the situation with Song Linyuan.”
“But you also know that I had no choice in this matter.”
“I liked you for your gentleness in the past, but now you’re acting like this—it’s truly disappointing!”
He was already frustrated, and with the recent chaos piling up, his tone became increasingly harsh.
Lan Qingxi sneered. “If you’re so disappointed in me, then divorce me.”
Her mention of divorce jolted Yu Junshu back to his senses. He quickly said, “Qingxi, we are husband and wife!”
“I’ve told you many times, I will never divorce you. Can you stop bringing up divorce so casually?”
Lan Qingxi said indifferently, “When the heir allowed his aunt to demand my dowry to pay for your concubine, why didn’t you think about the fact that we are husband and wife?”
Yu Junshu took a deep breath and replied, “I never said you had to pay for it. I only meant to borrow the money from you! I will pay you back in the future.”
Lan Qingxi raised an eyebrow. “If you want me to provide the money, fine.”
She pulled out a document and handed it to Yu Junshu. “This is a list I copied from what your aunt wrote. Tell me, how will you repay it and by when?”
“Write me an IOU detailing everything, and then I’ll give you the money.”
Yu Junshu glanced at the list. It was nearly double the amount Zhao Yan’er had originally requested. He immediately realized what had happened.
His expression darkened as he changed his approach. “Qingxi, we’re husband and wife. Do we really need to calculate everything so precisely?”
Lan Qingxi laughed coldly. “We are husband and wife, but I am not your woman.”
“Your woman is Zhao Yan’er. I don’t care how much dignity you want to give her, but don’t expect me to pay for it.”
Yu Junshu looked at her. Her statement, “I am not your woman,” stabbed his male pride.
He glared at her and said, “How did you turn into someone like this? You were the one who agreed to let me take Yan’er as a concubine!”
Lan Qingxi snapped back, “Yes, I agreed to let you take Zhao Yan’er as a concubine. But don’t you know what you did?”
“She’s your cousin, an orphan with no parents. And yet, you slept with her…”
She paused briefly before continuing, “You told me yourself that you are a responsible man, so I wrote the concubine agreement for you.”
“But now it’s all my fault? If that’s the case, then I don’t care about this concubine matter anymore. Take her if you want—do whatever you like!”
At that moment, Zhao Yan’er rushed in, tears streaming down her face. She sobbed, “Jun-ge, I don’t need the bride price anymore!”
“I didn’t know it would put you in such a difficult position. I just want to be your woman, that’s all.”
Yu Junshu’s temples throbbed. All his efforts to grant her some dignity had been for nothing.
Lan Qingxi smirked at Yu Junshu. “Heir, look at this. Miss Yan’er loves you so deeply. How could you bear to disappoint her?”
Zhao Yan’er looked at Yu Junshu with wide, hopeful eyes.
Yu Junshu let out a long sigh and dragged Zhao Yan’er out of the room.
Once they were gone, all traces of anger vanished from Lan Qingxi’s face.
She gave a thumbs-up to her maid, Li Qiu. “You brought Zhao Yan’er in at just the right time.”
The moment Yu Junshu entered, Lan Qingxi had instructed Li Qiu to call Zhao Yan’er over.
Lan Qingxi had timed her conversation with Yu Junshu carefully, saying those words just as Zhao Yan’er arrived, ensuring the latter would become anxious.
Zhao Yan’er didn’t disappoint her. She said exactly what Lan Qingxi had anticipated.
Lan Qingxi understood Zhao Yan’er well. She was an ambitious woman who would never give up so easily.
Claiming she didn’t need a single coin to become Yu Junshu’s concubine might make it seem like she loved him deeply.
But in the future, when Prince Chen came looking for her, it would appear as though Yu Junshu had been bullying Zhao Yan’er.
Lan Qingxi eagerly looked forward to that day.
