Chapter 37: Their Dependence on Each Other
While Lan Qingxi was still pondering her next move, Qin Yiniang arrived.
She greeted with a smile, “What brings Auntie here?”
Qin Yiniang replied, “Yesterday I saw that Li Qiu was seriously injured, so I came to check on her.”
Lan Qingxi slowly stood up and said, “You’re kind, Auntie. Please follow me.”
The maids and servants in the yard glanced at the two of them. Qin Yiniang’s eyes darkened when she noticed the looks, but Lan Qingxi ignored them and led Qin Yiniang inside.
Once inside, Qin Yiniang remarked, “It seems a bit too quiet in your room.”
Lan Qingxi understood what she meant and replied calmly, “When I married into the Marquis’ residence, the Marquis’ wife only allowed me to bring one maid into the mansion.”
“Aside from Liqiu, the people in this yard are all assigned by the Marquis’ wife.”
Qin Yiniang looked at her, and after a faint smile, Lan Qingxi said, “No worries, in a few days, I will replace them all.”
Qin Yiniang expressed some concern, “I’m afraid it won’t be that easy to replace them.”
Lan Qingxi nodded. “Normally, it would be hard to replace them, but now that I have a solid reason and excuse, it won’t be difficult.”
Since her rebirth, Lan Qingxi had wanted to replace these people, but there had never been the right opportunity. The maids and servants had been too arrogant, sneaking into her room. After she had dealt with them, they no longer dared enter her space. However, despite this, they still watched from outside, making it inconvenient for her to speak and act.
This time, after Liqiu had been injured, it was evident that some of the people outside were involved. Replacing them had become inevitable.
Qin Yiniang’s eyes flickered and she quickly understood what Lan Qingxi meant. “If you need my help, Miss, please don’t hesitate to ask.”
Before Qin Yiniang entered the mansion, Lan Qingxi had once approached her for advice. After accepting her suggestion, Qin Yiniang had successfully entered the mansion.
To Qin Yiniang, while being the concubine of the Marquis was more relaxed, she had to consider Yu Junxiu’s future. Yu Junxiu, who was already 16 years old, had been studying hard and was doing well in his studies. He was preparing to take the imperial exams. No matter how bad the Marquis’ reputation in the capital was, being the illegitimate son of an unknown person was not the same as being the Marquis’ son.
For this reason, when Lan Qingxi approached her, she only thought for a moment before agreeing.
Qin Yiniang had thought that entering the Marquis’ residence would be met with a lot of resistance, but it turned out to be much smoother than expected. She realized that this must have been Lan Qingxi’s influence. Her timing in entering the mansion was just right.
Lan Qingxi nodded. “Now that Auntie and I are on the same side, I won’t be polite with you.”
Qin Yiniang smiled upon hearing this, “Miss, there’s no need to be polite.”
Lan Qingxi’s eyes curved slightly in a smile. “In the future, when there’s no one around, you can call me Qingxi instead of Miss.”
Her eyes were full of sarcasm as she continued, “What kind of ‘Miss’ am I?”
Qin Yiniang had heard some rumors about Lan Qingxi in recent days. She hesitated, unsure whether to speak up, but just then, Li Qiu woke up. Lan Qingxi hurried over to her and asked, “How are you feeling?”
Li Qiu’s pale face looked weak as she replied, “It hurts a bit.”
Lan Qingxi gently touched her head and said, “Your injury will take some time to heal. Rest well.”
Li Qiu’s eyes reddened. “Miss, I didn’t steal Madam’s jade ruyi.”
Lan Qingxi nodded. “I know, they framed you. Yesterday, I helped you get even with Zhang Mama.”
“The people who harmed you, I will make them experience everything you went through yesterday.”
Li Qiu smiled faintly. “Okay.”
Though she said this, she felt that it was an impossible task.
Lan Qingxi brought over a bowl of medicinal porridge. “Drink this first. It will help with your injury.”
“You need to recover quickly; I’m waiting for you to get better and serve me.”
Li Qiu, badly injured, had no appetite, but hearing this made her muster the strength to finish the porridge.
As she drank, the blanket slipped off, revealing her injured back. Though Lan Qingxi had already dressed the wounds, there was still bl00d seeping through, making it look gruesome.
Qin Yiniang, watching the interaction between the two, realized that they were truly dependent on each other.
She remembered how Lan Qingxi had hurt Nanny Zhang for Li Qiu’s sake the day before. It was clear that Lan Qingxi was protective of her.
Though Lan Qingxi appeared gentle and kind, when she took action, she was resolute and decisive.
Qin Yiniang felt that anyone willing to treat their maid so well, yet capable of becoming enraged when their maid was wronged, was someone to be respected.
Such a person, even with the ability to be ruthless, surely had a kind heart and a sense of bottom line in their actions.
While Lan Qingxi took care of Liqiu, Qin Yiniang assisted her.
Li Qiu finished the porridge and fell back into a deep sleep.
Lan Qingxi touched Li Qiu’s forehead, noting that she had a mild fever, but not a high one. Her pulse was steady, and there was no immediate danger.
After settling Li Qiu, Lan Qingxi turned to Qin Yiniang and said, “I have something to ask you to help with tomorrow.”
Qin Yiniang asked, “What is it?”
Lan Qingxi smiled. “It will make you feel wronged.”
Qin Yiniang was taken aback. “…”
A moment later, Lan Qingxi suddenly pushed Qin Yiniang out of the room and scolded, “Stop pretending here!”
“As my mother said, you’re not a good person!”
With that, she slammed the door shut.
The maids and servants in the yard all turned their gazes toward Qin Yiniang.
Qin Yiniang’s face darkened as she quickly walked out. Just as she reached the gate, Lan Qingxi opened the door again and told everyone, “From now on, Qin Yiniang is not allowed to enter my courtyard.”
Qin Yiniang raised an eyebrow, then quickly left.
One of the maids asked, “Miss, what happened?”
Lan Qingxi, feeling wronged, replied, “Yesterday, my mother said she wasn’t a good person, and I didn’t believe her.”
“Today, she came to visit Li Qiu, but instead claimed that Li Qiu’s injury was a plot by my mother.”
“She said my mother wants to take my dowry, so she has to get rid of Li Qiu first to make her move easier.”
The maids and servants soon understood the situation.
Before long, the story reached Madam Zheng’s ears.
Madam Zheng had been terribly upset yesterday and had vomited violently, suffering until midnight before recovering slightly. She now felt weaker than before.
Lately, her mysterious illnesses had been recurring, and her symptoms were becoming stranger. She suspected she had been poisoned, but the doctor found nothing.
She had a gut feeling that if she continued like this, she might die from anger after a few more incidents.
Nanny Zhang, who had been struck by Lan Qingxi the day before, had not recovered well, and her head was still buzzing.
As the maids from Lan Qingxi’s courtyard came to tell Madam Zheng that Qin Yiniang had been pushed out of Lan Qingxi’s room, Madam Zheng frowned slightly.
