Chapter 46: Truly Satisfying
Madam Zheng felt quite displeased in her heart.
However, since she had just recently acted the part of a kind and loving mother-in-law in front of Lan Qingxi, she couldn’t ruin that image so soon.
So she said, “Since the Prime Minister wanted to see you, I naturally can’t stop you. But you should still be more careful — don’t let others see you.”
“As your mother-in-law, I can be broad-minded and understand the sacrifice you’ve made for the heir, but in the eyes of others, your actions appear improper — unchaste and unvirtuous.”
Before Lan Qingxi could respond, Fei Shuang spoke up coldly, “What a joke. It was you people who sent my lady to the Prime Minister, and now you blame her for it?”
“What do you mean by ‘you’re being generous’? And how dare you call her unchaste and unvirtuous? You have no shame at all!”
Madam Zheng glared at Fei Shuang. “Who are you? How dare you speak to me like that?”
Fei Shuang replied firmly, “From today onward, I belong to Miss Lan. As long as I’m here, no one will bully her.”
Lan Qingxi felt a jolt of familiarity at those words.
In her previous life, when she had brought Fei Shuang into the residence, Fei Shuang had said almost the exact same thing.
She had thought that since the timing and circumstances of Fei Shuang’s arrival were different this time, she would never hear those words again — but she did.
Her heart stirred with a strange mix of emotion.
Madam Zheng , meanwhile, automatically assumed Fei Shuang was a newly purchased maid.
A mere servant daring to behave so insolently in front of her — she could not tolerate that.
With a cold voice, she said, “A new maid acting this arrogantly? Clearly she hasn’t been properly trained.”
“Madam Zhang, come here and teach this girl what it means to serve as a maid.”
Madam Zhang obeyed, stepping forward and raising her hand to slap Fei Shuang.
Lan Qingxi quietly took a small step to the side.
The next moment, Fei Shuang punched Madam Zhang straight in the nose — bl00d spurted out instantly.
Madam Zhang was completely stunned. Madam Zheng was both shocked and furious. “How dare you!”
Fei Shuang sneered. “You call this daring? Then you really haven’t seen much of the world.”
As soon as she finished speaking, she kicked Madam Zhang hard. Madam Zhang flew backward, crashing into a chair and knocking it over.
The falling chair hit a nearby side table, tipping it over as well. The expensive vase on top shattered into pieces on the floor.
Lan Qingxi watched the all-too-familiar scene, her gaze flickering slightly, the corners of her lips curving upward in amusement.
Madam Zheng shouted angrily, “Are you rebelling?! Someone come — beat this maid to death!”
As soon as she spoke, several old servant women rushed in with wooden sticks, charging straight at Fei Shuang.
But Fei Shuang was one of the most skilled among Song Linyuan’s secret guards — how could a few untrained servants be a match for her?
With a kick, one woman was sent flying; with a swing of her arm, another was knocked to the floor. Within moments, all of them were lying groaning on the ground.
Madam Zheng stared in shock — she had never imagined that this delicate-looking maid would be so formidable!
She turned angrily toward Lan Qingxi. “You actually allow your maid to commit violence in front of me? Lan Qingxi, do you have no sense of filial duty at all?”
Lan Qingxi blinked and said innocently, “Mother, you really wrong me this time. You were the one who gave the order to strike first. Fei Shuang merely defended herself.”
“Besides, Fei Shuang isn’t my maid. She’s someone the Prime Minister personally assigned to attend to me — I have no authority over her.”
Madam Zheng: “…”
Madam Zheng: “!!!!!!”
Fei Shuang… is one of Song Linyuan’s people!
Madam Zheng was utterly shocked. “Why didn’t you say that earlier?”
Lan Qingxi looked perfectly innocent. “But Mother didn’t ask me just now!”
“The moment you saw Fei Shuang, you ordered people to strike. You didn’t even give me a chance to speak.”
In truth, she had had the chance to explain — but she deliberately didn’t.
Since Fei Shuang had entered the household, it was best for Madam Zheng to understand just how formidable she was.
Otherwise, Fei Shuang’s presence wouldn’t have the deterrent effect Song Linyuan had intended — and that would be a waste of his careful arrangement.
Madam Zheng felt her bl00d boiling. She was certain Lan Qingxi had done this on purpose to anger her — but she couldn’t afford to lose her temper now.
Forcing herself to calm down, she managed a strained smile. “As expected, the people from the Prime Minister’s residence are extraordinary.”
“I was merely joking with you earlier, miss. Please don’t take it to heart.”
Fei Shuang immediately stepped in front of Lan Qingxi and said loudly, “From now on, she’s under my protection. Whoever dares to bully her will have to deal with my fists first.”
Madam Zheng: “……”
She could feel her bl00d pressure rising again.
Taking three deep breaths, she finally said to Fei Shuang, “You’re quite mistaken, miss. Qingxi is my daughter-in-law — I only love and cherish her. How could I ever bully her?”
Fei Shuang arched an eyebrow, then turned to Lan Qingxi. “If there’s anyone you don’t like from now on, just call me. I’ll beat them up for you.”
“If I can’t knock them flat, I’ll admit defeat!”
Lan Qingxi’s lips twitched slightly, but she kept a calm expression. “Alright, I’ll count on you then, Fei Shuang.”
Then she turned to Madam Zheng and said politely, “If Mother has no other instructions, I’ll take my leave.”
Madam Zheng waved a hand. “Go, go. Make sure Miss Fei Shuang is settled in properly.”
Lan Qingxi could tell Madam Zheng was desperate to sweep them both out with a broom — she clearly couldn’t stand the sight of them anymore.
Lan Qingxi had clashed with Madam Zheng many times before. Because of her position, she often couldn’t act directly — even when she wanted to argue back, she had to choose her words carefully and never go too far.
But Fei Shuang was different. She had no such restrictions.
Lan Qingxi found Fei Shuang’s “if you can fight, don’t argue” attitude immensely satisfying.
As soon as they left, Madam Zheng snapped, “Go summon the heir!”
The fact that Song Linyuan had sent such a capable woman to Lan Qingxi couldn’t be a simple matter.
Madam Zheng was convinced that Lan Qingxi must have said something to him to earn such special treatment.
And that could only mean one thing — Song Linyuan genuinely cared about her.
He wouldn’t have gone to so much trouble otherwise.
That realization made Madam Zheng uneasy. Lan Qingxi was slipping out of their control. It would no longer be easy to manipulate her.
They would need to get hold of the Lan family’s weaknesses as soon as possible — only then could they keep Lan Qingxi obedient.
She sneered to herself, A man like Song Linyuan, going to such lengths for her?
“This vixen really knows how to handle men,” she spat through gritted teeth.
Meanwhile, Lan Qingxi returned to her quarters with Fei Shuang— and couldn’t help laughing out loud.
She gave Fei Shuang a big thumbs-up. “Well done!”
Fei Shuang had originally worried that starting a fight the moment she entered the Marquis’s household might frighten the delicate-looking Lan Qingxi.
If she scared her, she feared Song Linyuan might punish her.
But seeing Lan Qingxi’s reaction now, Fei Shuang relaxed. Clearly, she wasn’t as fragile as she appeared.
“This was nothing,” Fei Shuang said simply. “I only acted today to repay you for the flower cakes you treated me to. No need for praise.”
