Chapter 5: Nanny Qu
After Lan Qingxi arrived at the Medicine King Temple, Nanny Qu spoke with the temple steward, who then led them to the Medicine King Hall.
In the hall, several people were kneeling in front of the Medicine Buddha, seeking blessings. They gave Lan Qingxi a cursory glance before returning to their prayers.
The steward performed a bow and said to Lan Qingxi, “Madam, your filial piety is truly moving.”
“Madam, if you kneel here for seven days, the Medicine Buddha’s blessings will be very effective. The Buddha’s light will protect the entire Hou residence from any illness.”
Lan Qingxi returned the bow and then, following the small monk’s guidance, knelt before the Buddha statue in the great hall.
The massive Medicine Buddha, with a compassionate and kind expression, seemed capable of alleviating all suffering and illness in the world.
Lan Qingxi had once sincerely prayed before the Buddha, asking for protection for herself and the Huo Residence. The final outcome, however, was that she had no place to be buried.
She no longer believed in Buddhism; she only believed in herself.
But with Nanny Qu and the steward watching, she quietly remained kneeling.
As she knelt, Li Qiu also knelt beside her.
Once Lan Qingxi was settled, the steward left. Nanny Qu, feeling bored, yawned and looked at her disdainfully.
To Nanny Qu, Lan Qingxi seemed truly foolish. She was here praying to the Medicine Buddha for Zheng’s sake, while Yu Junshu took this opportunity to bring Zhao Yan’er into the house.
Not to mention, Yu Junshu had other plans in the Medicine King Temple, making it nearly impossible for Lan Qingxi to escape.
By midnight, someone had fainted from kneeling too long. The monks were used to such occurrences and came to carry the person out.
Lan Qingxi calculated the time and decided the moment for action had arrived. She stood up.
Nanny Qu, who had been sleeping by the door, immediately snapped, “Where do you think you’re going? You’re not done kneeling yet!”
Lan Qingxi’s face turned slightly red as she softly said, “Nanny, I need to use the restroom.”
Li Qiu stood up to assist her.
Nanny Qu couldn’t stop her, but with a look of disgust, she said, “Lazy people have too many bodily needs. Hurry up!”
Lan Qingxi lowered her head and obediently moved forward. Fearing she might run away, Nanny Qu followed her, yawning.
Nanny Qu glanced at the hourglass; it was almost time for the agreed-upon moment. After Lan Qingxi finished using the restroom, she could be sent away without drawing attention.
Li Qiu found Nanny Qu to be very unpleasant. Her mistress’s temper was so mild that the servants bullied her this way.
Lan Qingxi noticed Nanny Qu following her and, without surprise, used thirst as an excuse to have Li Qiu fetch a cup of tea from the front courtyard.
After Li Qiu left, Lan Qingxi picked up a stone.
In the dark of night, Nanny Qu, drowsy, didn’t see Lan Qingxi’s action.
Lan Qingxi entered the latrine and didn’t come out. Nanny Qu grew impatient and called out, but no one responded from inside.
Nanny Qu, grumbling, went in to check. “Taking so long in the restroom, did you fall in?”
In the next moment, a stone struck Nanny Qu on the back of her head. She turned around, stunned and disbelieving.
What she saw was like a ghost. The usually docile Lan Qingxi now stood in the shadows with a cold expression.
With the moonlight slanting at just the right angle, a thin beam illuminated Lan Qingxi’s delicate and beautiful face. Her eyes held no trace of docility but only murderous intent and mockery.
Nanny Qu instinctively felt danger but didn’t have time to react before being kicked into the latrine.
Not fully unconscious yet, she struggled to climb out. She tried to call for help but found she couldn’t make a sound.
Lan Qingxi calmly took out a match, lit it, and threw it into the latrine.
In an instant, the methane in the latrine ignited with a deafening explosion, sending filth flying everywhere.
Lan Qingxi ran far away, and the filthy things were blocked by the front courtyard wall, not a single drop splashing on her. She blinked lightly and then shouted in a panic: “Nanny Qu, what’s wrong? What happened? Help!”
At this time, it was midnight, and the shout startled everyone in the entire Medicine King Temple. The patrolling monks rushed over first and asked: “What happened?”
Lan Qingxi looked like she was trembling with fear: “I don’t know, I came out and saw my maid go in. I saw a black shadow flash by, and then it suddenly exploded inside… Nanny Qu, are you okay?”
Of course, no one inside would respond, and she looked like she was in a state of extreme shock, speaking incoherently. The monk wanted to look inside but was forced to retreat quickly as another explosion occurred.
In the distance, the sound of clashing swords could be heard, and it seemed like someone was fighting. The monk’s face turned ugly as he also shouted for help.
Lan Qingxi looked like a timid woman who had been frightened, screaming as she ran towards the wing room. She seemed to be in a panic, but this route was actually part of her plan. She wanted to see who the man was who had humiliated her after she was sent to the wing room.
She could never forget that night when she was kneeling in the Buddhist hall and fell asleep due to dizziness. When she woke up, she was in a man’s arms. The room was closed, and the moonlight couldn’t enter, so she couldn’t see the man’s face. That was also the night when she was almost raped to death by the man.
Because of this incident, Yu Junshu appeared to be very protective of her and even quarreled with Zheng Shi several times. This made her deeply trust him and willing to do anything for him.
As she turned the corner, she bumped into someone and smelled a familiar masculine scent. She apologized subconsciously: “Sorry…”
But the next moment, she heard a slightly mocking voice: “Not enough to throw yourself into my arms during the day, and now you’re sending yourself over at night?”
Lan Qingxi heard Song Linyuan’s voice and felt her brain buzzing. She looked up and saw his eyes with a hint of mockery.
Because they were too close, she could feel the heat from his body, which awakened the memories she didn’t want to recall: the man who pressed her down that night was also hot and burning like this.
She asked subconsciously: “Lord Song, do you have a scar on your back?”
She regretted asking as soon as she spoke, realizing she had asked a silly question due to her emotions.
Song Linyuan’s narrow eyes slightly narrowed: “You’re so concerned about me, why don’t you come and touch it yourself to see if I have a scar?”
After speaking, he pressed her heavily against the courtyard wall, his hot breath spraying onto her face, exuding extreme danger.
Lan Qingxi could clearly feel that his state was completely different from when they first met: when he pressed her down, she only felt his cruelty. But now, she could clearly feel his malicious intentions, as if he wanted to swallow her whole, just like that night…
