- Chapter 11 - Secret Societies
The next morning, Kuno woke up early. While drinking his coffee, he opened the newspaper.
In the job listings section, one strange message caught his eye: “A great change will soon come to the world. Our brethren, gather at the Keimei Society.”
Kuno frowned. “Huh? Do people recruit for religions through newspaper ads now?” he wondered.
After finishing the paper, he thought, “I should at least look up where Sigma Soft Services is.” He pressed the power button on his computer.
When the computer started up, he double-clicked the Internet Explorer icon, opened the search engine, and typed “Σ Soft Services.” He quickly found the company’s homepage. On the company profile page, he checked the address and saved it in the map app on his phone.
Then another thought crossed his mind. “Since I’m at it, maybe I’ll look up the Yatagarasu too.” He typed “Yatagarasu” into the search bar and clicked the first result that came up.
The page read: “Due to differences in beliefs, the Keimei Society separated from the Yatagarasu…”
“Keimei Society? Isn’t that the same name I just saw in the newspaper?” Kuno recalled the ad from earlier.
He kept reading. “It is also said to have close ties with the Freemasons…”
“Whoa, the Freemasons… I remember hearing about them in The Da Vinci Code,” Kuno thought.
“Come to think of it, I’ve read something similar before…”
Then it hit him. “That’s right, it was in a gossip magazine or something—an article about Sigma’s U.S. headquarters. I remember people talking about it at work. It said something about the Freemasons being involved in founding the company. I thought of The Da Vinci Code back then too. Maybe the rumor about needing to be part of Yatagarasu to get promoted isn’t so far-fetched after all…”
As Kuno sat in front of his computer, lost in thought, his phone alarm suddenly went off.
He turned it off and stretched. “Guess it’s about time to get ready,” he said, standing up and heading for the bathroom.
After taking a shower, he dried his hair with a towel, grabbed the remote, and switched on the TV.
This time, a breaking news report flashed on the screen: an intruder had broken into the Temple Association.
Kuno frowned. “Didn’t I just see a report about a suspicious person getting into the Pentagon the other day? I hope nothing like 9/11 happens again…”
