- Chapter 16 - Mysterious Advertisement
At that time, Haruka and the others were on the train. Inside the carriage, three girls around high school age were happily chatting together.
One of them, a short-haired girl, pointed at a hanging advertisement and said, “Hey, look! The same ad goes all the way down the train!”
Kuno instinctively followed her finger with his eyes. It’s true… those are the same words as the ad I saw in this morning’s newspaper job listings… he thought.
The short-haired girl said, “It says, ‘A great change is about to come to this world.’ Is this some kind of movie ad? Sounds kinda crazy, right?”
Then the long-haired girl sitting to her left frowned and said, “What are you talking about? Where do you even see that? It clearly says ‘Bargain Sale’!”
She turned to the third girl, a brown-haired one, and asked, “Doesn’t it totally look like a bargain ad to you?”
The brown-haired girl nodded and said to the short-haired one, “You must be half-asleep or something.”
The short-haired girl puffed up her cheeks. “Ehh~?”
The brown-haired one laughed. “No, seriously, you’re the crazy one!”
“Come on, you two are just teasing me again!” the short-haired girl protested.
“Yeah, yeah…” the brown-haired one said playfully as she ruffled her friend’s hair. Then the three of them quickly moved on to another topic, chatting and laughing again.
Kuno, however, frowned slightly. That short-haired girl wasn’t lying… So why do the other two see a different ad?
He turned to Haruka and asked, “Um… what kind of ad is that, exactly?”
Haruka looked up. “It clearly says, ‘Big Sparkling Sale’.”
Kuno replied quietly, “But to me, it says, ‘A great change is about to come to this world. Our brethren, gather under the Keimei Society.’ I can’t see anything else.”
Haruka froze. “Wait… Keimei Society? That’s—”
“Yes,” Kuno said firmly.
“The Keimei Society that may have kidnapped your father. It looks like this ad changes depending on who’s looking at it. I think it’s a message—a way to gather certain people who can see it.”
Haruka’s face paled a little. “A great change is about to come to this world’… What’s really happening out there… that we don’t know about?”
