- Chapter 22 - Assassination
Time passed, and Rikyu was invited by Nobunaga to attend a tea ceremony. Before the gathering began, he was summoned to Nobunaga’s private tea room. When he entered, there was no one else inside—only Nobunaga.
Nobunaga said, “It’s about this…” He brought out a wooden box wrapped in a purple cloth and placed it before Rikyu. Rikyu asked, “What is this?” He untied the wrapping and opened the lid of the box.
Nobunaga spoke solemnly. “I believe this is the Trinity, a relic passed down from my ancestors— the proof of leadership that had long been lost.”
When Rikyu lifted the object inside, a vivid image flashed through his mind— a gigantic bird soaring across the sky. In that instant, he knew this was the real Trinity.
Nobunaga declared, “If this is truly the genuine article, then I, Nobunaga, am the rightful leader!
With me at the head of the organization, unifying the realm will be no challenge at all!”
But Rikyu barely heard Nobunaga’s words. He was too overwhelmed by the power radiating from the artifact. When Nobunaga asked, “Well? What do you think?” Rikyu blinked and came back to himself.
“I cannot say for certain until I’ve studied it more closely,” he answered. Nobunaga frowned. “What’s wrong? You look pale.” Rikyu shook his head quickly. “No, it’s nothing… I will examine it at once.” Taking the box carefully into his arms, he left the castle in haste.
Rikyu hurried straight to the organization’s headquarters. Nobunaga, though born with strong abilities,
was not chosen as leader due to his dangerous ambitions. Even if he did become the head, the council could still keep him in check, Rikyu thought. But if he gains control of the Vermilion Bird said to obey the Trinity… then no one could stop him.
When Rikyu arrived before the council, he reported, “I was invited by Lord Nobunaga to a tea gathering.
There, he presented me with this—wrapped in a purple cloth. He believes it to be the mark of the leader.”
A senior member asked gravely, “So… is the item inside truly the Trinity of legend?” Rikyu bowed his head. “Most likely… yes.”
“This is bad,” another murmured. Rikyu agreed quietly, “Yes. Lord Nobunaga intends to use the Trinity as proof of his claim, and through the organization, seize control of the nation.”
“The matter of Nobunaga’s punishment,” said the elder,
“will be handled by the organization.”
“As for the contents of that box… there is no choice but to seal it away.” At those words, five of the most powerful members rose to their feet. “Leave the rest to us,” they told the others, then turned to Rikyu. “Gather around ten people—those without family or ties.”
Rikyu obeyed. The ten people he gathered dug a deep pit. At each of the four corners surrounding the box, one council member entered a large urn and was buried. A fifth was sealed directly above the box.
When the task was complete, the ten workers were erased by the organization— leaving behind fifteen lives as the price of the seal.
In the end, only Rikyu, who oversaw the ritual, knew the location of the sealed box.
Inside his mind, Kuno finally understood. Keifuku was right… The one who destroyed our home world,
and that other star as well—was me. And now… even Earth is being dragged toward ruin because of me.
The truth struck him like lightning, and in that moment, his consciousness was torn back to reality.
As he drifted between dream and waking, he heard a voice—one he remembered clearly. It was the same voice he had heard when Nagata and Mitsuchi had returned from their own visions.
This time, it spoke firmly: “Remember!”
Kuno’s fading thoughts echoed weakly. “Remember? What else is there for me to remember…? Something… even more important…?”
