- Chapter 3 - A Fateful Encounter
Shortly after being discharged from the hospital, Kuno received a call from Nagata. They hadn’t seen each other since leaving the hospital, and Nagata invited him to meet up.
When Kuno arrived at the café they’d agreed on — Café Original — he saw Nagata through the glass. Nagata spotted Kuno too and raised a hand in greeting. Sitting across from him was a woman Kuno didn’t recognize. Following Nagata’s gaze, the woman turned toward Kuno, and when their eyes met, she gave a polite nod.
Kuno entered the shop, ordered, “One iced caramel macchiato, please,” and after receiving it at the counter, carried it over to their table and set it down. He took the seat next to Nagata.
Kuno glanced at the woman. “And this is?” he asked.
“Nice to meet you. I’m Mitsutomo Haruka,” she said, introducing herself.
“Nice to meet you. I’m Kuno Chisato,” Kuno replied, returning the greeting. He removed the lid from his iced caramel macchiato and stirred it slowly with the straw.
Kuno didn’t understand why Haruka was sitting with them and looked questioningly at Nagata.
Nagata scratched his head and said, “Well, actually…” “When I told a friend about what happened — that strange experience — they introduced me to a reporter who wanted to do an interview.” He gave a sheepish smile. “My friend asked if I could at least let her hear the story directly… I thought of calling to ask, but…”
Kuno sighed. “You had me wondering if this was going to turn into some kind of sales pitch or something.”
Ignoring that, Haruka leaned forward. “Let’s start with this — what caused you to be hospitalized?”
Kuno thought, She’s a little impatient, isn’t she… but began to explain.
He told her how he’d had an accident while diving, how he’d suffered no external injuries but had fallen into a coma. In his dream, he’d rescued a young Nagata from a burning building. He didn’t know if that dream had anything to do with it, but both he and Nagata had regained consciousness on the same day.
After learning to walk again, he had met Nagata by the vending machine in the waiting area — and was shocked to find they had shared the same dream. Even after leaving the hospital, he’d often thought about it, though that meeting had been their first time ever seeing each other.
After listening to everything, Haruka spoke. “When exactly did the accident happen?” she asked.
Kuno answered, “I think… it was August last year.”
Nagata nodded. “Mine was in August too… I didn’t think I had any connection with you, Kuno, but what a coincidence. Maybe we’ve got some other thing in common.”
“Do you remember the exact date?” Haruka asked.
“If I recall right, it was the thirty-first,” Kuno replied.
Nagata reacted playfully. “Ah, too bad. If it had been the same day, I might’ve said it was fate.”
“‘Fate,’ huh? Even small-town hosts don’t say stuff like that anymore,” Kuno laughed, teasing him.
Nagata smiled wryly. “Mine was a little earlier. I fell down a flight of stairs and was taken to the hospital — I think it was on the twenty-eighth.”
Haruka’s face grew serious. “Actually, my father… he’s been unconscious since a gas leak accident on August twenty-eighth last year.”
“The same day as your accident, Osada-san…? That’s too much to be just coincidence,” Kuno said quietly.
Nagata tried to lighten the mood. “Then maybe it really is fate,” he joked, but his words fell flat, and a strange tension hung in the air.
