Writing Love Letters in the Enemy’s Toilet - A Vow of Eternal Love, Even After Rebirth (Transmigration) - Chapter 38 – Assassin
While the children were playing, a massive shadow swept across the ground. Looking up, they cried out in excitement, “It’s Suzaku!”
The crimson mecha descended gracefully before them, and Helios stepped out from within. The children immediately ran to him, laughing and shouting, “Helios! Helios is back!” as they clung to his legs and arms.
Among them, a little girl named Amanda noticed someone behind Helios and asked curiously, “Who’s that person?”
Helios smiled and introduced, “This is Mares, my friend.”
Amanda tilted her head. “Ohh~ Mares’ friend, huh~”
Then Booth tugged on Helios’s hand. “Welcome back! Sister’s waiting for you!”
Booth led him toward the orphanage. As they reached the entrance, he called out, “Sister! Helios is back! Helios came home!”
The door burst open, and Sister rushed out to embrace him. “Oh, Helios, welcome home!”
Helios smiled and gestured to his companion. “This is Mares — the one I told you about over the phone.”
Mares bowed politely. “Thank you for letting me stay here for a while.”
Nick, another of the children, asked, “How long are you staying, Helios?”
“Maybe two days,” Helios answered.
“Aww, that’s too short!” Nick pouted.
Helios chuckled. “But Mares will be here for a while! He’s the one who pilots the White Tiger!”
Booth’s eyes widened. “Really!? You’re the White Tiger pilot?”
Mares nodded. “That’s right. Though, I’m hurt right now, so I can’t ride it for a while.”
The moment he said that, all the children swarmed around him, their eyes sparkling.
“Whoa, tell us stories!”
“Yeah, yeah, hurry, hurry!”
Laughing, they pushed his wheelchair inside, peppering him with questions.
Though a bit flustered at first, Mares soon relaxed, answering their endless curiosity with patience and good humor. By bedtime, not a single child wanted to leave his side.
The next day, both Helios and Mares, exhausted from entertaining the kids, didn’t wake up until noon.
“You’re finally up,” Sister teased. “Lunch is almost ready.”
Helios stretched. “Where are the kids?”
“Outside playing,” she said. “Perfect timing — could you go call them in for lunch?”
“Got it,” he replied, stepping outside.
“Hey, everyone! Time to eat — come help set the table!” Helios called.
The children’s voices chorused back, “Okaaay!” as they began to gather.
But Helios frowned when he didn’t see Amanda or Kelly among them. He caught Nick by the arm as the boy was heading back inside. “Nick, did you see Kelly and Amanda?”
Nick shook his head. “Nope.”
Helios hurried back in. “Sister — Amanda and Kelly aren’t here.”
Sister’s face paled. “Maybe they went to pick flowers in the back hills? I told them not to — there are bears there!”
“I’ll go find them!” Helios shouted, rushing out.
In the forested hills behind the orphanage, Helios soon came upon a fallen bear — encased in ice. Drawing closer, he saw a crystalline rose embedded in its body.
“Who would do this…?” he murmured. “Poor thing… whoever it was must be a powerful ability user — and close by.”
He pressed on, heart pounding. Please… Kelly, Amanda… be safe!
At last, he reached the flower field. There — he spotted the two girls, and beside them, a young woman he didn’t recognize.
“Kelly! Amanda!” he called.
Kelly turned and ran to him, eyes wide. “There was a big bear! It was so scary! But that lady saved us!”
So she’s the one who froze the bear… Helios thought, taking Kelly’s hand as he approached the woman.
“Thank you for helping them,” he said politely.
Amanda smiled and introduced her. “This is Selene!”
Kelly nodded. “We were picking flowers together!”
Selene smiled softly. “I used to play with children their age back in my homeland.”
Helios thought, She doesn’t seem like a bad person… and asked gently, “About the bear — that was your doing, wasn’t it?”
“Yes,” Selene replied. “The ice rose will melt soon, and the bear will recover. Hopefully it’ll stay away from humans after that.”
“I see… You’re not from around here, are you?”
“No,” she said, looking distant. “I came from far away. My homeland, Niflheim, is covered in ice and darkness all year round… I wish the children there could play somewhere this beautiful.”
Helios blinked. “Far away…? Where exactly—”
Selene caught herself. “I’ve said too much.” Then she knelt to the children. “I need to talk to this man for a bit. You two should head home now.”
She conjured two small ice roses and handed them to Kelly and Amanda.
The girls giggled, then wove flower crowns, placing one on Selene and one on Helios.
“I love you, big sis!” Kelly beamed.
“Be nice to her, okay?” Amanda said mischievously, taking Helios’s hand and placing it over Selene’s.
Helios flushed. “You cheeky little—!”
Laughing, the two girls ran off toward the orphanage.
Suddenly, a vivid vision flooded Helios’s mind — children being taken away, a woman who looked just like Selene, and a land of endless ice.
He staggered. “You… where are you from? Those children — are they hostages? That woman — she looked just like you!”
Selene froze, eyes widening. “How do you know about my sister… and the children?”
Helios stared. “Your sister…?”
Her voice trembled. “My country… is on Mars. I came here… to defeat you.”
Helios stepped back. “I don’t want to fight you!”
Tears welled in her eyes. “Please… you must fight me! If I don’t, they’ll kill my sister, Luna — and the children!” She raised an ice-forged sword, holding it before her as she closed her eyes and charged.
Helios sidestepped, spinning behind her and locking her in his arms.
“Why aren’t you using your full power?” he demanded. “Someone of your skill—”
Then a wave of her consciousness crashed into him. Memories — despair, resolve, a final wish.
“You planned to die… from the start…” he whispered.
“Please… they’re watching,” she said weakly. “Kill me… now…”
But before he could answer, another vision burst through both their minds —
A hospital… a woman named Haruka reading a letter outside an operating room.
Inside — a dying man named Kuno.
Their emotions — their final words — I’ll find you in the next life.
Tears welled as the memories surged — love, regret, longing.
Helios whispered, “Mitsutomo…”
Selene gasped, “Kuno…”
They stared at each other in shock. Helios’s grip loosened, and Selene slipped free, leaping back.
“What… was that just now…?” Helios murmured.
Selene’s voice trembled. “Those memories… who were they?”
They stood frozen, gazes locked — until distant voices broke the moment.
“Helios! Helios!” Booth came running. “Sister says to bring your friend! She wants to thank her for saving Kelly!”
Kelly tugged Helios’s sleeve. “Where’s the big sister?”
Helios turned toward where Selene had stood — but she was gone.
“…She went home,” he said quietly.
Back at the orphanage, Nick frowned. “Helios, you’re acting weird.”
Mares nodded. “You okay? You look pale.”
Helios forced a smile. “Booth, you can have my dinner tonight.” Then he retreated to his room.
Alone, he sat on the bed, head in his hands.
That vision… what was it? My past life? Was I this Kuno… and she… Mitsutomo Haruka?
Did I really find her again — only for her to be my enemy? What am I supposed to do now…?
His thoughts spiraled until sleep overtook him.
That night, in his dreams, the memories returned in full — his past life, his bond with Haruka, and the love that had quietly blossomed between them.
