- Chapter 42 – When the Present, Past and Future are Connected
Helios and the others had been struck by lightning and lost consciousness. When they came to, everything around them was silent.
Ares was the first to speak. “Are we… dead?”
Helios shook his head. “No… looks like we made it.”
They glanced around — the entire area was a scorched wasteland. Ares whistled low. “Hard to believe we survived this…”
Helios turned toward Tia. “You okay?”
Holding her head, Tia muttered, “The fact that my head still hurts must mean I’m alive…”
Then she looked up anxiously. “What about Mares? The children — are they safe?”
Helios paused for a moment, then said, “I can hear crying from the orphanage… sounds like they made it.”
Ares looked to the sky. “Think the lightning’s done falling?”
Helios and Tia followed his gaze.
At that moment, Zeus’s image appeared across the heavens.
Zeus’s voice thundered: “The sin of you humans — who have defiled this universe — is great.
I intended to wipe out your kind completely. However, it intrigues me that you have taught a god who knew not love… what love truly is.”
“As a reward, I shall grant you a second chance. But punishment must still be dealt — I strip you of Mars, of your powers, and of your Trinities.”
Helios called out, “God! What happened to Mars? Did anyone survive?”
Zeus replied, “These are the only ones who remain.”
In an instant, Selene appeared before them — along with a woman who resembled her, and the surviving children.
Selene looked around in confusion. “Where… are we?”
Helios, Tia, and Ares were gently lowered from the Phoenix to the ground.
Helios ran toward her. “You did it!”
Selene spotted him and cried, “You’re alive!” — throwing her arms around him.
Then she looked up at him. “But… why? How?”
Helios smiled softly. “I’ll explain later — but God… He forgave us.”
Zeus spoke once more: “I will grant you a gift.”
At his words, the charred landscape around them shimmered — transforming into a vast, green world overflowing with life. Then, the image of Zeus and the Phoenix faded from the sky.
Tia, who had been clutching her head, suddenly gasped. “It doesn’t hurt anymore!”
Ares blinked. “What doesn’t?”
“My head! It felt like it was splitting before — but the pain’s gone!”
Zeus had erased Tia’s power — and in doing so, had also removed the tumor that was its source.
Suddenly remembering, Tia cried, “Mares!” and rushed toward the orphanage.
Meanwhile, Ares was enthusiastically trying to charm Luna — Selene’s younger sister.
Helios sighed. “Hey, you’re scaring her off, Ares.”
Ares retorted, “What? You’ve got Selene, Mares has Tia—”
Just then, Mares appeared, being pushed in a wheelchair by Tia. “Yeah, and I’m the only one without a girlfriend. Feels kinda lonely, huh?”
Ares grinned sheepishly. “Sure does! The war’s over — might as well try falling in love, right?”
He took Luna’s hand and blurted, “P-please… be my friend!”
Watching him, Helios smiled — then turned to Selene. “Would you… go on a date with me?”
Tears welled in Selene’s eyes. “Yes.”
She smiled through them. “It took us a long time to get here, didn’t it?”
