Chapter 5 – The Police’s View
A few days later, still troubled by her father’s behavior before the trip, Mitsutomo Haruka went to the police station to ask for help.
Showing the business card she’d been given at the hospital, she said, “My name is Mitsutomo. I’d like to speak with Mr. Tanaka, please.”
She was guided to a reception room and waited for a while. Soon, a man she didn’t recognize came in.
“I’ll be speaking with you in place of Mr. Tanaka,” he said.
“When I think back,” Haruka began, “my father was acting differently the day before the trip, so I thought maybe—” But the man cut her off. “If this is about that case, the investigation already confirmed there were no problems at his workplace, no debts, no financial troubles. It’s been classified as an accident.”
“Wait, but—” Haruka tried to protest, confused, but the man stood up quickly and said, “The case has already been closed as an accident. Please leave now.”
Haruka pressed on, “Please, investigate properly!” But the man wouldn’t listen, and she was turned away at the door.
“What is this!?” she muttered in frustration, leaving the Totsuka Sakagami Police Station with no choice but to give up—for now.
