Yamada Tatsuya, age 35, is a mid-level manager at a company. Though he earned his promotion to section chief, he’s not sure if it came too early or too late—and frankly, he regrets it. The role comes with a measly ¥10,000 bonus, but the emotional toll of being sandwiched between demanding bosses and needy subordinates makes it feel far from worth it.

He dreams of a slow life in the countryside, fishing and relaxing. But reality is harsh: long hours, endless complaints, and no energy left for hobbies. He’s single, childless, and increasingly disillusioned with his life.

One night, after another exhausting day, he stops by a convenience store for dinner. While waiting in line, a high school girl ahead of him panics—she’s forgotten her wallet and only has a bottle of water. Tatsuya, feeling oddly generous, pays the ¥100 for her. She’s deeply grateful and insists on repaying him someday.

Later that evening, Tatsuya gets a call from his father: his grandfather has passed away. The funeral is set for the next two days, and Tatsuya learns that his grandfather left him his house in the will.

After the funeral, Tatsuya visits the house to begin sorting through his grandfather’s belongings. It’s a well-kept, spacious home—far better than his current apartment. While exploring, he remembers the one room he was always forbidden to enter: his grandfather’s study.

Curiosity gets the better of him. He opens the door… and finds something impossible.

The room is far larger than it should be—clearly defying the laws of the house’s structure. And standing inside is a small girl with long black hair, dressed in a white hooded robe, holding a black cat.

“I’ve been waiting for you, Master Tatsuya,” she says.

She introduces herself as Ruri, a homunculus created by Tatsuya’s grandfather to assist him. She explains that his grandfather was a legendary mage in another world—and now, Tatsuya is meant to inherit that legacy.

Tatsuya is stunned. His mundane life has just collided with a magical secret—and the door to a new world has opened.
