You Are My Omega (GL) - Chapter 11
Lin Xinyi could clearly feel that something was different in the Xu household today. Normally, around this time, Xu Manyue would take Xu Shijiu to the hospital for her scheduled physical therapy.
That time slot had always been fixed. Ever since Lin Xinyi moved in, she had paid close attention to it. It wasn’t hard to confirm. But today, they didn’t go.
Even the doors to Xu Manyue and Xu Shijiu’s rooms stayed closed when it was time for breakfast, which was unusual.
While helping the housekeeper in the kitchen, Lin Xinyi quietly observed her expression. Just as she expected, the housekeeper looked weighed down and distracted.
“Auntie…” Lin Xinyi called out softly.
“Hmm?” The housekeeper snapped out of her thoughts at the sound of Lin Xinyi’s voice. She quickly flipped the egg in the pan, but it was already overcooked. With a sigh, she scraped it out and threw it in the trash.
If it had just been a little overdone, Lin Xinyi might have said to keep it. But the egg was completely black on one side and clearly inedible.
The housekeeper’s distraction only confirmed for Lin Xinyi that something was wrong. This wasn’t like her at all.
She cracked another egg into the pan, then turned and gave Lin Xinyi a gentle smile.
“What is it, Xiaoyi?”
“I was just wondering… is there something special about today?” Lin Xinyi asked carefully. She had debated whether to ask, but if she didn’t and accidentally said something insensitive later, it could make things worse.
“Today…” The housekeeper’s eyes went distant again. This time, she quickly returned to herself and looked at Lin Xinyi’s concerned face. She let out a quiet sigh, impressed by how observant the girl was.
“You might as well know.”
Lin Xinyi was a little surprised at how easily the housekeeper gave in.
“There’s no hiding it,” the housekeeper said, shaking her head. “You’ll find out sooner or later. When their father comes today and causes another scene, how could we hide it from you?”
She paused for a moment, then spoke gently.
“Today is the anniversary of the death of the girls’ mother.”
Everything clicked in Lin Xinyi’s mind. No wonder the atmosphere in the house felt so heavy.
“And Xiaoyi, when the master comes later, you should stay in your room and not come out,” the housekeeper added.
“Why?” Lin Xinyi asked. Was it because she was an outsider?
“It’s a long story,” the housekeeper replied. She sighed again, this time deeper, and didn’t say anything more.
Lin Xinyi didn’t know the details, but the housekeeper’s warning stayed with her. She decided that when their father came, she would quietly return to her room and not get involved in the family’s private matters.
She didn’t understand everything, but she was willing to respect their boundaries.
As breakfast cooled, Xu Manyue and Xu Shijiu finally came out, one after the other. Both of them looked pale and withdrawn.
Lin Xinyi watched as one sat staring into her bowl and the other stared blankly at her empty plate. She felt sympathy for them, but she also found it a little bit touching.
The sisters didn’t look alike at all, but right now, with their matching expressions, they seemed more similar than ever.
Lin Xinyi quietly stepped into the role of caretaker. She picked up a piece of almond cake and placed it into Xu Manyue’s bowl.
“Sister, you should eat more of this. Auntie said she learned how to make it just for you.”
“Thank you,” Xu Manyue said, still looking down. She didn’t raise her head because she didn’t want Lin Xinyi to see how swollen her eyes were. She began eating quietly.
Time really passed quickly. Another year had gone by, and this day had come again.
This painful, unforgettable day.
“Xu Shijiu, try this.” Lin Xinyi added two more pieces of cake and a few dumplings to her plate.
Xu Shijiu ate without saying anything.
But Xu Manyue noticed her sister’s state and suddenly felt something shift inside her.
“Xiaoyi, why did you give Xiaojiu so much and only gave me one piece?” She tried to joke, pulling the corners of her mouth into a smile, but gave up halfway.
“Huh?” Lin Xinyi hadn’t expected her to speak and paused in surprise. “Because Xu Shijiu is too skinny.”
It was true. She was far too thin.
When she had helped her change clothes earlier, Lin Xinyi had felt how bony she was, even through her clothing. She had lifted her with almost no effort at all.
“You really care,” Xu Manyue said quietly.
“Sister, you’re being childish,” Xu Shijiu muttered, rolling her eyes. Was it really necessary to make a big deal over a single breakfast?
Still…
Thanks to her sister’s teasing, Xu Shijiu found herself pulled out of her sadness. Looking at the food piled on her plate, she felt a bit of warmth return to her heart.
Later, when their father arrived, Xu Manyue took Lin Xinyi back to her room and firmly told her to stay there, no matter what she heard.
Lin Xinyi nodded and obediently locked the door behind her.
But she still wondered to herself.
Why didn’t they visit their mother’s grave?
On Lin Xinyi’s very first day at the Xu household, she noticed that the relationship between the Xu sisters and their father was not just bad—it was terrible.
It was clear from the way Mr. Xu spoke. His words were filled with indifference, not only toward Xu Shijiu but toward the entire family. Lin Xinyi could not understand how things had become like this.
Lin Xinyi came from a single-parent family. Her mother had passed away when she was very young, and she was raised by her father. But she had never been a child lacking in love. She had never felt deprived of a father’s affection or even a mother’s love, because her father always told her that her mother had risked her life to bring her into this world.
To her, family was something truly precious.
And love was something every person longed for.
Suddenly, a series of loud crashes broke the silence. The noise was so intense that even if Lin Xinyi wanted to ignore it and focus on her book as Xu Manyue had instructed, it was simply impossible.
She set the book down, walked to the door, and held the handle tightly. She hesitated.
Should she go out or stay inside?
Her sister had told her not to go. Her aunt had told her the same. But now, with things so out of control, she was certain that Xu Shijiu had to be present at the memorial. Was Xu Shijiu safe?
Over the past few months, Lin Xinyi had come to understand that Xu Shijiu was someone who lacked a sense of security. She was often afraid and carried deep insecurities. And with her limited mobility, what if she got hurt in the chaos?
Lin Xinyi could not stop thinking about Xu Shijiu’s safety. That thought alone made her decide what she needed to do.
She opened the door quietly and followed the sound.
The moment she stepped out, she was hit by the strong scent of white orchid pheromones in the air. Her expression changed, and she quickly covered her nose and mouth with her hand.
Even though an Omega who was not in heat would not have any physical reaction to an Alpha’s pheromones, the oppressive feeling was still there.
The scent in the air was aggressive and wild.
As a highly sensitive top-tier Omega, Lin Xinyi felt incredibly uncomfortable. Nausea crept in, and her head began to throb painfully.
If she had not seen it for herself, Lin Xinyi would never have believed that the man currently destroying the room in such a frenzy, with a twisted expression on his face, was the same well-mannered and refined pianist she had met before.
He looked like a wild animal, grabbing anything he could and smashing it onto the floor. He shouted at Xu Shijiu and Xu Manyue. His words were rushed and slurred, making it hard to understand what he was saying. Still, there were some lines Lin Xinyi heard clearly.
“Xu Manyue, if it weren’t for you, she wouldn’t have died. She died because she was rushing home for your birthday. It’s your fault she is dead.”
“Xu Shijiu, why? Why wasn’t it you who died?”
Lin Xinyi was stunned. She could not believe a father would say such cruel and heartless things to his daughters. How could anyone speak with such malice? How cold must a father be to say something like that?
She immediately looked at Xu Shijiu and Xu Manyue.
The sisters stood near the table where the memorial photo was placed, watching their father closely and cautiously. On the surface, they seemed unaffected. But Lin Xinyi saw through it.
She saw the glimmer of tears in their eyes.
They cared. They were deeply hurt.
Her attention was drawn to Xu Shijiu, who had lowered her head after hearing those words. Lin Xinyi’s heart ached. She wondered if Xu Shijiu was crying quietly or trying to hold back her tears.
Why wasn’t it you who died?
How could anyone say such a thing?
How many times had Xu Shijiu heard those words before?
Lin Xinyi did not know. She only knew that her heart was hurting terribly.
“Father, say whatever you want to me, but not to Xiaojiu.” Xu Manyue stepped forward, cutting off her father’s cruel words.
“Xiaojiu was only seven years old at the time. Please, be reasonable.”
“Sister, be careful!” Xu Shijiu suddenly cried out. She had not expected her sister to try stopping him again after so many failed attempts. Watching Xu Manyue walk toward their father made her panic.
“Sister, he’s dangerous! Come back!”
At that moment, when Xu Shijiu looked up, Lin Xinyi saw her tear-streaked face.
Without thinking, Lin Xinyi ran straight toward her.
Xu Shijiu was desperate. She tried to push her wheelchair forward, but the room was in complete disarray. Objects were scattered everywhere, making it nearly impossible to move smoothly. Seeing her sister standing so close to their enraged father made her even more anxious.
Suddenly, the wheelchair hit an overturned table. Xu Shijiu and the chair both fell to the ground.
As she fell, Xu Shijiu saw pieces of broken glass from a teacup on the carpet. Her heart sank. She shut her eyes tightly.
“Xu Shijiu!”
Just before her eyes closed completely, she heard a familiar voice call her name. The next moment, she landed in someone’s arms. There was no pain.
Xu Shijiu quickly opened her eyes.
She saw Lin Xinyi lying beneath her, her face pale. Lin Xinyi had shielded her. Her white shirt was soaked with bl00d, and shards of glass were embedded in her left shoulder. Xu Shijiu’s eyes turned red again.
“Are you alright?”
Lin Xinyi asked gently, doing her best to endure the pain in her shoulder.
“I’m okay…”
Xu Shijiu stared in shock at the Omega who had thrown herself into danger to protect her. Her tears fell uncontrollably, like water pouring from a broken faucet.
