You Are My Omega (GL) - Chapter 16
When Xu Shijiu got home and locked herself in her room, Lin Xinyi still had no idea what she had meant by her words. She could not understand what Xu Shijiu had been trying to express.
“Jiejie, what is wrong with Xu Shijiu?” Lin Xinyi was genuinely confused. Xu Shijiu’s mood could shift so suddenly, sometimes warm and bright, other times cold and distant. It was impossible to predict her behavior.
The sudden change in her attitude just now felt especially strange.
“Maybe she was jealous?” Xu Manyue answered uncertainly. Shijiu did have a strong possessive streak. Since Lin Xinyi was her fiancé, her Omega, she probably did not like seeing her around other Alphas, especially not someone like…
Especially not a top-tier Alpha.
From a status perspective, a top Alpha and a top Omega were a perfect match. Of course Shijiu would feel jealous.
But Xu Manyue still was not sure. She did not know whether Xu Shijiu had truly accepted Lin Xinyi in her heart.
Even though Father Xu had announced their engagement without asking, and the news had already spread, if Shijiu herself had not fully accepted it, then none of it really mattered.
Xu Manyue understood this clearly.
“Jealous?” Lin Xinyi looked even more shocked and immediately denied it. “That is impossible.”
“Maybe she was just tired from school today.” Xu Manyue smiled. “Go to your room and organize your schoolbag. You do not need to do any more housework starting today. If I see you doing chores again, I will not let you off easily.”
“Alright.” Lin Xinyi agreed quietly. She turned to leave, but then suddenly stopped and turned back around, hesitating for a moment. “Jiejie…”
“What is it?” Xu Manyue was curious about her hesitation.
“Will Sister Liu be coming by again anytime soon?” Lin Xinyi asked carefully, summoning her courage.
“You want to talk to Yanyan?” Xu Manyue was surprised to hear her mention Liu Lingyan.
Now that Lin Xinyi brought her up, Xu Manyue realized it had been over a month since they last saw each other. They had only been chatting over video and phone calls. Even during their susceptibility and heat periods, they had relied on inhibitors.
She missed her deeply.
“I want to ask her something. Could you give me her contact information?” Lin Xinyi asked gently, watching Xu Manyue’s expression closely. She was prepared to drop the subject at once if she saw any discomfort.
To her surprise, Xu Manyue did not hesitate and readily said, “Of course.”
Xu Manyue assumed Lin Xinyi wanted to ask Liu Lingyan about Omega-related matters. Although there was an aunt in the house who was an Omega, her age made it hard to discuss certain things. Even though there was still a large age gap between Liu Lingyan and Lin Xinyi, it was easier to talk to her than to an older adult. It would be less awkward and more comfortable.
Lin Xinyi received Liu Lingyan’s contact information but did not reach out right away. Instead, she stared at the number on her phone for a long moment, then placed the phone face down and began packing her schoolbag. She carefully wrote her name on each textbook.
Earlier at school, after the teacher handed out the books, there had been some time given to write names on them. But Lin Xinyi had spent that time helping Xu Shijiu label hers, completely forgetting about her own books.
Now, stroke by stroke, she wrote Xu Shijiu’s name on every book. Lin Xinyi was unsure whether what she was doing was right or whether Xu Shijiu would be upset by it. But by the time she realized what she had done, it was already finished.
She still remembered how Lin Zhiling, the girl sitting in front of her, turned around and caught a glimpse of her writing Xu Shijiu’s name. There was a brief, knowing smile on her face.
Far from being annoyed, Xu Shijiu had been surprised and pleased when she opened her books and saw her name written in such graceful handwriting. The heaviness she had felt earlier melted away like a spring breeze.
In terms of Alpha rank, Xu Shijiu was no match for Mo Jinlan. Even physically, she could not compare to her. But Lin Xinyi was hers.
She was her fiancée. Her Omega.
Xu Shijiu gently brushed her fingers across the name written on the page. Her emotions were hard to put into words.
At first, she had resisted Lin Xinyi. But over time, little by little, Lin Xinyi had moved closer and closer to her.
But was Lin Xinyi truly someone she could trust with her heart?
Xu Shijiu did not know.
She had not always been so guarded or suspicious. She had once been open. But after being deeply hurt, she had become afraid.
The pain from letting her guard down and then being betrayed had been unbearable. That kind of pain, that kind of heartbreak, was too much.
She could not go through that kind of pain again. Her heart could not survive another wound.
Unaware of all the thoughts swirling in Xu Shijiu’s mind, Lin Xinyi had carefully written her name in each book without knowing how much it would affect her.
Thankfully, Xu Shijiu still went to school the next day. Although she left not long after arriving, just like before, the time she spent on campus had clearly increased.
The days passed, calm and steady. Before long, half the semester had gone by, and the midterm exams were approaching.
At first, no one had forced Xu Shijiu to attend class. They wanted her to take it one step at a time. But now that midterms were here, they could no longer let her continue like this.
Xu Manyue and Lin Xinyi were both worried about her academic performance, while the one they were so concerned about did not care at all. She was completely indifferent to the upcoming exams and her grades.
“The midterm exams are coming up,” the teacher said during class. “I hope some students will take class more seriously. Even if you fail, I will still encourage you and have the class help you improve, so please do your best…”
The teacher’s speech continued until the bell finally rang. Before leaving, she deliberately glanced at the seat in the corner.
But the person who really needed to hear those words, Xu Shijiu, had not been listening at all. She kept her head down, resisting quietly. Meanwhile, Lin Xinyi, the top student in class, happened to meet the teacher’s eyes.
The teacher’s look had been obvious. Everyone saw it. Combined with Xu Shijiu’s usual behavior, everyone in the class clearly understood who the message had been meant for.
Lin Xinyi had already thought about this and couldn’t help but frown. She knew that Xu Shijiu really did need to adjust her attitude, but the way the teacher had handled it in class made her feel uncomfortable. The teacher had not clearly called anyone out, yet had obviously hinted at something. That kind of indirect pressure didn’t sit well with her.
Xu Shijiu didn’t notice any of it. She was already used to being the center of attention. She placed her neatly packed and completely unopened schoolbag onto her lap and began to move her wheelchair toward the door.
When it came to rehabilitation, Xu Shijiu had already lost most of her hope. However, during her session yesterday, while the doctor was inserting acupuncture needles, she suddenly felt a faint pain in her leg. That pain was actually good news for her.
But she hadn’t told anyone about it. First, because when she tried hitting her leg afterward, she still felt nothing. Second, because she didn’t want to disappoint her sister.
This wasn’t the first time something like that had happened. Every time she thought she felt something, it turned out to be a false alarm. Her sister always took it harder than she did and ended up even more upset.
So Xu Shijiu had learned to be cautious. She decided not to say anything right away during her therapy sessions.
Today’s therapy session was scheduled for after school.
Her sister always arranged it that way with the doctor, but Xu Shijiu never stayed at school until then.
Just as she was about to leave, she heard a voice behind her.
“Xu Shijiu.”
Lin Xinyi suddenly grabbed the handle of her wheelchair.
Worried about hurting her, Xu Shijiu stopped and instinctively looked up. “Hmm?”
“Can you stay and finish your classes today, please?” Lin Xinyi’s voice was gentle, and her tone carried a hint of pleading.
“Why?” Xu Shijiu looked puzzled. Lin Xinyi had never tried to stop her before. Why now?
“Midterms are coming up. You really shouldn’t keep missing class. You need to listen to the lectures.” Lin Xinyi spoke with quiet urgency and automatically lowered her voice so that the other students wouldn’t hear.
Maybe Xu Shijiu didn’t care, but Lin Xinyi didn’t want her to be embarrassed in front of the class.
“Midterms?” Xu Shijiu blinked, clearly confused.
“Yes. The teacher mentioned it earlier.” Lin Xinyi could tell right away from her reaction that she hadn’t been paying attention at all.
Xu Shijiu went quiet. Her eyes dropped slightly, filled with a distant sense of confusion and disbelief. So half the semester had already passed without her noticing.
“Xu Shijiu, please just listen to me this once. Stay and attend your classes today, alright?” Lin Xinyi thought her silence meant she was refusing, so she added gently, “This afternoon, the teacher will be going over the most important topics for the midterm. You haven’t been paying attention in class, so you really need to hear this.”
Xu Shijiu slowly looked up. Through her fringe, she saw Lin Xinyi’s worried face, so earnest and sincere, and something about that expression made her heart ache.
For a moment, she didn’t want to answer right away.
“Your sister is so worried about your grades. Just this once, show her that you’re trying. Make her proud. Give her a little peace of mind, alright?” Lin Xinyi continued gently.
Last night, her sister had come to her after being called in again by the homeroom teacher. She had asked Lin Xinyi for help, hoping she could encourage Xu Shijiu to care more about the upcoming exams.
In truth, it wasn’t just about the exams. What they really wanted was for Xu Shijiu to have a more positive attitude.
Half the semester had already passed. Things couldn’t keep going like this.
“So you’re only here because my sister asked you to be?” Xu Shijiu asked in a flat voice that sounded strangely cold.
“Huh?” Lin Xinyi didn’t understand and quickly shook her head. “No, that’s not it.”
Xu Shijiu gave a faint scoff. She didn’t believe her and thought Lin Xinyi was just making excuses. But even so, she moved her wheelchair and returned to her seat.
Since Lin Xinyi had asked so sincerely, she decided to give her this one chance.
