- Chapter 31 - Acting as the Atmosphere Crew Guest
Three hours earlier.
Inside a private room at the Ping’an Hotel, the round rotating table was filled with all sorts of delicacies. Everyone was busy feasting, the only sounds being the clatter of chopsticks and waves of compliments.
But the atmosphere at the meal was a little strange—because of Su Xi and Wang Jiasong.
The two of them deliberately sat far apart. Wang Jiasong kept sneaking glances at Su Xi, but she never once looked his way. He grew so anxious he was practically scratching his ears. Seeing this, Xiao Bai quickly tried to comfort him: “She’s probably just shy with so many people around. Wait till you’re alone later, then you two can really talk.”
Jin Yu quietly leaned over to Su Xi: “Do you not really like Wang Jiasong?”
Su Xi frowned, biting lightly on her chopsticks. “Mm, he’s kind of annoying.”
Annoying how? She’d seen plenty of rich playboys before, most of them were libertines by nature. This Wang second young master in front of her was clearly an old hand at the game of love—who knew how many women he’d been with.
Earlier in the day she had gotten a bit swept up in the moment, but after cooling down that evening she decided to forget it! They weren’t on the same path at all. Su Xi made up her mind to keep her distance until he got the hint.
But for some reason, Wang Jiasong just kept glancing her way, making everyone notice the strange tension between them.
Feeling uncomfortable under his gaze, Su Xi excused herself to the restroom. Just as she stepped out, she saw Wang Jiasong blocking the hallway, lips curved in a smile, eyes glimmering. When he saw her come out, his grin widened.
Su Xi’s heart skipped, and she quickly turned her head away.
The hallway outside the restroom was narrow, only wide enough for one person to pass. Su Xi forced herself to stay calm as she walked forward. “Excuse me.”
Seeing her ignoring him, Wang Jiasong hurriedly stopped her. “What do you think of me? Want to give it a try?”
Su Xi’s face turned colder than it had been earlier that day. “No.”
He was still thinking about their earlier flirtation and couldn’t understand why she suddenly turned cold. “But earlier today, didn’t you also…”
“That was normal,” Su Xi cut him off. “What woman wouldn’t be shy in that situation? But that doesn’t mean anything. Are you done? I’m leaving.”
Again, Wang Jiasong blocked her way, his brows furrowed. “I don’t get it! You clearly feel something for me too!”
Su Xi’s temper flared. “Yes, I feel something—but that doesn’t mean I have to be with you! Besides, you’re the Wang family’s second young master. You can have any woman you want. What’s one less of me? There are plenty of women who like you!”
His expression softened. “Since there’s a spark, why not give it a try?”
Su Xi rolled her eyes. “Did you even hear the important part?”
She was naturally beautiful, and tonight’s outfit only made her more striking: a black shirt with cropped slim-fit jeans, high heels, and a long trench coat—cold and stunning. Even her eye-roll was gorgeous, making Wang Jiasong’s heart race.
He smirked and leaned closer, putting on an act. “I heard it—you like me, right? Don’t worry, I don’t care for those shallow girls. I like you—fiery and exciting!” As he spoke, he reached for her hand.
Smack! Su Xi slapped his hand away without hesitation.
“But I don’t like your type! Sure, you’re good-looking and have a nice body, I’ll admit I was tempted—but so what? Just because I think about it doesn’t mean I’ll act on it! I’ve seen too many rich young masters like you—changing girlfriends like clothes, tossing them some cash when you’re bored. Why should I date someone like you?”
“Who says I just toss money at them?”
“Isn’t that what you do?”
Wang Jiasong suddenly straightened up, speaking earnestly: “I swear I don’t. I take every relationship seriously.”
“Every relationship? How many are we talking about?” Su Xi sneered, then stomped his foot with her heel and turned to leave. Wang Jiasong hissed in pain and instinctively reached out—accidentally grabbing her wrist. In her heels, Su Xi lost balance. The two of them stumbled, about to fall, but Wang Jiasong twisted mid-step, cushioning her fall with his own body.
At that moment, a robot waitress in a cheongsam slid over. “Honored guests, I am Ping’an Hotel Service Unit 039. Do you require assistance?”
Looking at Su Xi braced against his chest, Wang Jiasong chuckled. “No need.”
Su Xi’s face burned red. “Let go!”
He grinned shamelessly. “No. You’ve been ignoring me all night.”
Her heart skipped again. Forcing herself to sound stern, she snapped, “The floor is filthy. Get up if you want to talk.”
“Oh.” He obeyed—but still kept an arm around her waist, preventing her from rising.
Su Xi pinched his arm angrily. “Let go!”
This time he finally released her, getting up first. Seeing her struggle in her heels, he didn’t hesitate—one arm braced against the floor, the other sweeping her up in a princess carry.
Su Xi was startled by his sudden strength. Snapping back, she immediately struggled. “Put me down!”
“Not unless you agree to be my girlfriend.”
At 172cm, Su Xi had a large frame and wasn’t light, yet no matter how she struggled she couldn’t break free. She dug her nails into his arm, trying to force him to release her.
Just then, voices approached. Alarmed, Su Xi buried her face against his chest, terrified someone would recognize her.
A passing couple whispered: “Look at him—carrying his girlfriend so long without even getting tired. You can’t even carry me…”
Hearing this, Wang Jiasong shamelessly chimed in, “She’s not my girlfriend yet.”
The girl froze. “What?”
“This one in my arms isn’t my girlfriend yet. She hasn’t agreed.”
Seriously—was there any need to explain at a time like this? Furious, Su Xi dug both hands into his arm. He groaned in pain but still refused to let go.
As they neared the private room, Lu Ting’s hearty laughter drifted out. Su Xi finally caved. “Fine, fine, I agree! Put me down!”
“Ah, girlfriend.” The word made Su Xi’s knees go weak.
She warned him in a low voice: “Behave yourself inside!”
He beamed, victorious. “Okay, whatever you say.”
That indulgent tone made Su Xi’s ears burn.
Back inside the room, all laughter stopped—of course, everyone had been gossiping about them.
Under their burning stares, Su Xi quickly returned to her seat, while Wang Jiasong strolled in leisurely like a cat who’d just stolen cream.
Everyone’s gossip radar went wild. Pretending to eat, they pricked up their ears.
Xiao Bai awkwardly tried to break the silence. “Uh… you two were gone a while.”
Which only made it worse.
“Mm, yeah, a bit,” Wang Jiasong replied.
Sensing juicy drama, Xiao Bai pressed, waggling his brows. “So, Young Master Wang, what happened? Tell us!”
Wang Jiasong’s gaze stuck to Su Xi, his tone lazy. “Well…” He paused, as if waiting.
Sure enough, Su Xi shot him a sharp glare. His lips curled. “Nothing much, just talked a little.”
“What the…” Everyone’s ears drooped in disappointment.
A while later, Jin Yu grew irritated at the endless pings on her phone. Xiao Bai just wouldn’t quit—when he couldn’t get info from Wang Jiasong, he kept spamming her instead. Annoying.
Still, Jin Yu was curious too. Under the table, she nudged Su Xi. “So, you two made up?”
Not wanting to admit anything, Su Xi mumbled vaguely. “Mm.”
Then everyone’s phones buzzed nonstop.
This bunch—when they couldn’t gossip aloud, they switched to chatting online!
After dinner, Wang Jiasong leaned close to Su Xi’s ear. “Want to walk by the river, help digest?”
Before she could reply, Xiao Bai butted in, grinning. “Why so close? Whispering sweet nothings already?”
Wang Jiasong’s eyelid twitched. “Nothing like that. I just asked if she wanted to walk by the river.”
Su Xi quickly added, “Everyone should come along.”
Xiao Bai instantly agreed. “Yeah, yeah. You two alone might cause misunderstandings—better if we all go together!”
Damn this Xiao Bai—such a busybody! Wang Jiasong was about to object when Su Xi shot him a look, stopping him.
He sighed dramatically. “Am I that intolerable?” Taking advantage of a moment, he secretly pinched Su Xi’s pinky.
She muttered, “You promised to listen to me.”
Lu Ting excused himself, saying he was too old to join the youngsters. The short-haired girl and the big guy also declined, citing errands.
But not Xiao Bai—he was dead set on being a light bulb for this reluctant couple.
“Xiao Bai, can’t you read the room?” Jin Yu muttered.
Grabbing her arm, he dragged her toward the door, grimacing. “Nope! I already said it—we have to go with them!”
“Why can’t you just go alone? I’m not being a third wheel.” Jin Yu stood firm, unmoving.
After several failed attempts to pull her, Xiao Bai switched tactics. “We’re not third wheels—we’re wingmen! Look, they clearly like each other but are both so awkward. If we create chances for them—holding hands, maybe a kiss—then it’s a done deal!”
“That… makes sense,” Jin Yu admitted, then shook her head. “But I still don’t want to go.”
Xiao Bai nearly jumped. “Why not?”
At that moment, Su Xi spoke. “Jin Yu, come with me?”
Xiao Bai smirked smugly, as if saying See?
Su Xi linked arms with Jin Yu and walked ahead, heels clicking steadily. Quietly, she confessed, “I agreed to be his girlfriend.”
Jin Yu smiled softly. “Isn’t that a good thing? Why look so troubled?”
Su Xi frowned. “I’m worried he’s just after the novelty.”
“Then break up.” Jin Yu said it matter-of-factly.
Su Xi sighed. “But I just agreed. If I break up right away, he’ll cling even harder.”
Jin Yu’s eyes lit up. “Then keep it secret for now. Call it a three-month trial run.”
Su Xi’s eyes brightened. “You mean like a probation period? Brilliant! You’re the best, Jin Yu!”
She waved it off. “No big deal.”
Just then, Wang Jiasong strolled over, his eyes gleaming in the night. “Want to go sing? I’m pretty good at it.”
Three minutes earlier
Looking helpless, Wang Jiasong beckoned Xiao Bai over. “Come here.”
Xiao Bai rushed over eagerly. “Yes, Young Master Wang?”
Staring at Su Xi’s silhouette ahead, Wang Jiasong muttered, “Be smart later. Find a way to separate her and Jin Yu. Got it?”
Xiao Bai winked. “No problem, leave it to me, brother!”
As they walked, they came across a KTV. Xiao Bai’s eyes gleamed. “Bro, how’s your singing?”
Wang Jiasong modestly replied, “The guys say I’m not bad.”
Xiao Bai schemed. “Then invite Sister Su Xi to sing. Dedicate her a love song. Show off a little!”
Wang Jiasong’s eyes lit up. He clapped Xiao Bai’s shoulder hard. “Genius! I knew I could count on you!”
The slap was so hard it nearly knocked Xiao Bai over. “Easy, easy…”
When the four entered the KTV, Wang Jiasong chose a love song. But after just one line, the others burst into uncontrollable laughter.
He blinked, confused. “What? Am I off-key?”
Jin Yu and Su Xi clutched their stomachs laughing, while Xiao Bai, pitying him, said gently, “Honestly, Young Master Wang… compared to your fists, your singing is a bit lacking.”
That was putting it kindly—he hadn’t hit a single correct note.
Frustrated, Wang Jiasong slumped on the sofa.
Catching Xiao Bai’s signal, Jin Yu grabbed a mic. The two of them started playing the part of “atmosphere crew,” giving space to the awkward pair.
Xiao Bai queued a syrupy love ballad, but since Jin Yu couldn’t sing it, he had to solo. He didn’t mind—solo it was.
After a while, Su Xi couldn’t stand it.
From across the room, she could feel Wang Jiasong’s burning gaze locked onto her like fire, threatening to scorch her whole. She picked up a mic, intending to sing with Xiao Bai, but he immediately shoved it into Wang Jiasong’s hands.
Ignoring him, Su Xi sang on her own. Her voice was clear and beautiful, full of feeling.
Even with her back to him, she felt his intense gaze boring into her, until she finally turned. Their eyes locked, clinging to each other.
At that moment, the song entered the duet part. Following her lead, Wang Jiasong managed to stay in tune. His deep voice mingled with her bright one, weaving the song into something tender and stirring.
Xiao Bai whispered to Jin Yu, “Told you it’d work. But seriously, their eye contact is disgusting.”
It really was like glue.
When the song ended, the atmosphere between them softened a little. Seizing the chance, Xiao Bai ordered a dozen cocktails.
They played truth or dare. Jin Yu and Xiao Bai conspired to rig the bottle so it kept landing on the couple. After several rounds, Wang Jiasong admitted he’d only been in two relationships. Su Xi was shocked—she’d had three.
Now it was his turn to get anxious, pestering her for details.
Even Jin Yu got dragged in eventually, forced to admit she’d dated once—but she didn’t say who.
After rounds of drinks, the night finally wound down. Among them, Su Xi and Xiao Bai stayed relatively sober. Naturally, Xiao Bai escorted Jin Yu, leaving Su Xi to deal with Wang Jiasong.
But crafty Xiao Bai also called Jin Mu over. As their coach, he had a duty to help teammates. As a brother, he had a duty to back up his bro.
Besides, Xiao Bai thought, maybe Jin Mu secretly liked Jin Yu too. Ha, I’m such a good brother.
Grinning to himself, he ordered a designated driver for his beat-up second-hand Volkswagen, then flopped onto the back seat, leaving the rest to fate.
