Young Miss from the Feng Family - FJXM Chapter 20
“Me? A country bumpkin from the countryside? Whose interests could I possibly threaten?”
“The political landscape in the capital is complex. You’ll understand once you’ve been here long enough.” the Prime Minister replied, his tone serious.
“Oh, I get it. So it’s my bad luck to be caught up in your mess.” Gu Jiu Ge mused sarcastically, clearly thinking that the attempt on her life was likely orchestrated by one of the Prime Minister’s many enemies.
The Prime Minister didn’t respond, and Gu Jiu Ge fell silent as well.
Training at the War King’s Manor… The rigorous training there was known to be brutal, with very few who could endure it. The real question was whether those who went would even come back alive.
No wonder the Prime Minister was willing to bestow the title of heir on her, even at the expense of his precious son.
“Prime Minister, you’d better think carefully. Once you give me the title of heir, as long as I don’t die, your beloved son will never have a chance at it.”
With that, she didn’t wait for a reply and got up to leave.
She had said what needed to be said; the rest was for the Prime Minister to figure out.
“You unfilial son!” the Prime Minister shouted after her, but the frustration in his voice was evident.
“Master, why be so angry? As long as he agrees to go to the War King’s Manor, haven’t we achieved our goal?” a voice soothed from the side.
“With that frail body of his, there’s no guarantee he’ll survive the War King’s training. How could he possibly compete for the heir’s position?”
Back at Tinglan Pavilion…
“The War King’s Manor… What is the War King up to? To openly summon the heirs of noble families for training, and the Emperor just allows it? Could there be some deeper plot at work?” Gu Jiu Ge wondered aloud. Her knowledge of the War King was limited, mostly that he had left the capital at the age of five and returned as a revered hero. No one knew exactly what trials he had faced to become the War King.
Unable to unravel the mystery, she decided to let things play out as they would. “Whatever comes, I’ll handle it as it happens.”
“After all, we came here for the War King. Eventually, everything will become clear.”
With three days left before the training began, Gu Jiu Ge decided it was time to investigate who had ordered the attack on the real Gu Jiu Ge.
It quickly became apparent that no one in the Prime Minister’s Manor welcomed her return.
The Prime Minister had his reasons for bringing her back, so she could rule him out. Madam Gu and Gu Qingqing were more likely suspects. However, after digging deeper, Gu Jiu Ge discovered that while these two had indeed been involved in some minor schemes, they hadn’t been the ones to send the assassins.
So who could it be?
Could it be someone outside the Prime Minister’s Manor?
Who would view a disregarded, supposedly useless person raised in the countryside as a threat? Was it truly, as the Prime Minister suggested, a matter of the capital’s political struggles?
“Xiaowei, how is your investigation on Gu Qingshan going?”
“Young Master, there’s very little information on Gu Qingshan. The most I could find was that he left home at a young age to become a disciple somewhere. After that, all traces of him vanish.” Xiaowei reported, her tone tinged with frustration at her lack of success.
This Gu Qingshan was indeed shrouded in mystery.
Gu Jiu Ge pondered for a long time but couldn’t piece together who else might have a reason to want her, someone who had been practically invisible, out of the way.
Meanwhile, at the War King’s Manor…
“The eldest son of the Gu family has returned?” Leng Tian Ao, dressed in simple attire, held a brush in his hand, painting something on a piece of paper.
Ye Ying, his loyal shadow, knew all too well that his master was once again painting that same figure. Although the master never drew the person’s face, it was clear that this person was deeply imprinted in his heart.
“Yes, Master.” Ye Ying confirmed.
“Returned, has he? Interesting.” Leng Tian Ao mused, though his face remained expressionless, his focus entirely on the painting.
“Master, do you want us to…?” Ye Ying made a cutting motion across his throat.
“No need. Some things must be done slowly, without haste. You may go.” Leng Tian Ao replied calmly.
