- Chapter 10 - Zhang Ya's Transformation
Right in front of Zhou An, Zhang Wei unzipped the pillow. Hidden inside the cotton stuffing was a bag of crushed instant noodles.
“This?” Zhou An was shocked. He hadn’t expected food to be hidden inside a pillow, and he had no idea how no one had discovered it.
“Just a coincidence!” Zhang Wei said with a grin.
Maybe the person who slept here last night didn’t use this pillow. After all, the dark color made it look a bit dirty.
“Even if it’s crushed, it’s better than nothing. Remember those dry snack noodles we had as kids? Just sprinkle on the seasoning…” Zhang Wei opened a packet, poured a little into his hand, and gestured for Zhou An to try.
Zhou An was feeling a bit hungry too. He took the packet, sprinkled in the salty seasoning, and started eating it messily.
Zhang Wei then opened the comforter and dumped out over a dozen flattened bread rolls, handing one to Zhou An.
He signaled Zhou An to keep quiet—they couldn’t let the people in the next room know there were two people still alive in this dorm.
If they found out, and Zhang Ya turned into a zombie, the others might come over.
“Who knows if they’ve been bitten?”
Zhang Wei checked the lock on dorm 512 and made sure it was bolted from the inside.
He could faintly hear Zhang Ya crying in the neighboring dorm.
“It hurts! Shaofeng, it hurts so much… I’m going to die! Where the hell is Zhang Wei, that bastard?!”
“Bro! Even now she’s calling you a bastard!”
“I was going to give her a quick death, but now she can suffer for all I care. And hey—don’t call me ‘bro’!”
Zhang Wei listened quietly to Zhang Ya’s cries while waiting for time to pass.
Zhou An was drenched in cold sweat.
It was almost noon. In no more than three hours, Zhang Ya would start mutating.
Zhang Wei actually felt safer now that he had switched dorms.
He also retrieved the watermelon knife he had stashed away.
With a weapon in hand, there were so many more things he could do.
“That old saying: with a blade in hand, I rule the world.” It might be an exaggeration, but the confidence the knife gave him was real.
Fighting zombies barehanded was completely different from fighting them with a weapon.
Right now, though, Zhang Wei didn’t need to do anything. He just needed to wait—wait for Zhang Ya to turn.
Once she mutated, it would be his game.
The supplies in that dorm would eventually be his again, even though there wasn’t much left.
The campus was in chaos. Screams echoed from time to time—clearly, people were still turning.
“Maybe some survivors were found after hiding.”
One by one, the survivors were being taken out. The cries were bone-chilling.
Xu Long and the others were starting to panic.
They were safe for now, but hearing the screams and zombie howls outside, and watching Zhang Ya’s wound fester and start to rot, made them uneasy.
Zhang Wei said to Zhou An, “Zhang Ya’s face must be turning dark by now, and her foot probably full of pus.”
“How do you know that?”
“I’m guessing.”
“The zombie virus spreads through the bloodstream and eventually reaches the brain. That’s when a person turns into a mindless monster—just like all those others outside.”
Zhou An was a friend, so Zhang Wei didn’t mind sharing some of his thoughts.
Before long, chaos broke out in the next room.
“Zhang Ya, are you okay?” That was Liu Feng, the buzz-cut guy, and second in strength only to Xu Long. He was the first to lose his cool.
“Vice class rep doesn’t seem fully conscious. Could she be turning?” Li Xiaoqian sounded terrified. She didn’t want to die here.
Unexpectedly, Zhang Ya still had the strength to curse. “You’re the one turning! I’m just in pain! Once Zhang Wei comes back with his phone, my dad will send a helicopter to take me to the hospital!”
Zhang Wei knew she was lying.
That said, her family was a little better off than his. Her dad was a small construction contractor and made a few hundred thousand yuan a year.
But in the apocalypse, getting a helicopter? That was a pipe dream.
Listening from next door, Zhang Wei realized Zhang Ya was lying through her teeth just to survive.
Still, he wouldn’t go expose her. Let them hold onto a bit of hope.
After all, hope in a zombie apocalypse was as precious as diamonds.
“Is her family really that rich? Even has a helicopter?” someone questioned.
Most people, including Qin Shaofeng, didn’t know much about Zhang Ya’s background.
“Well then, take us too! We’ll all ride the helicopter together!” Some of the classmates sounded excited.
Zhang Ya said no problem—she’d take everyone. Everyone except Zhang Wei.
“Zhang Wei’s probably dead by now anyway!” Zhang Cheng chimed in. He thought Zhang Wei had just thrown his life away.
That included Zhou An, who had just “gone out to die.”
Zhang Wei stayed completely still, quietly listening from behind the wall.
Soon, Zhang Ya’s condition worsened.
The intense pain made her scream like a night owl.
She writhed on the dorm floor.
Feeling bad, Xu Long pulled out a few thick quilts and wrapped her up to stop her from hurting herself.
“It hurts even more! Aahhh! Zhang Wei, you bastard! Bring back the phone and painkillers already!”
The girls in the dorm were starting to panic again.
Zhang Wei couldn’t see what they were doing, but he could imagine them flailing in fear.
Xu Long, still trying to keep control, said, “Don’t panic. Zhang Wei might not be dead!”
“Whether he brings the phone or not, if he comes back, we’ll play it by ear and take the knife from him first!”
“Zhang Cheng, take this mop handle. When Zhang Wei comes in, I’ll throw a blanket over him and you smash him on the head!”
Now that Zhou An had left, they had six guys and four girls—ten people total, not counting Zhang Ya and Qin Shaofeng.
Everyone else was freaking out.
Run, and you risk getting bitten by zombies outside.
Stay, and you risk Zhang Ya turning.
Qin Shaofeng still had the nerve to comfort her: “Hang in there, Zhang Ya. You’ll be fine.”
If Zhang Wei had been there, for his own safety, he would’ve made this suggestion:
Tie Zhang Ya up with towels or shoelaces.
Nobody would object to that.
Then stuff her mouth with a towel or socks. Even if she did turn, she wouldn’t be a threat.
Too bad they kicked Zhang Wei out.
As the saying goes: “Heaven may forgive a sin done by fate, but not one committed by your own hands.”
“Qin Shaofeng… it hurts so much… send someone to get the phone, quickly!” Zhang Ya was near death now, her mind slipping into confusion.
Send someone to get the phone?
But who would go?
Liu Feng didn’t even look—he just backed away. Even the ever-loyal Qin Shaofeng and Xu Long were hesitating.
Zhang Ya screamed in frustration, but no one was listening anymore.
She finally turned to Qin Shaofeng: “Qin Shaofeng, please… go… I’m dying… you’re so good at basketball—no one can block your shots…”
Xu Long stayed silent.
“You’ve got to be kidding! Basketball has rules! Zombies don’t!” Qin Shaofeng almost jumped in anger.
“And what if the air outside is poisonous? Even if I don’t run into a zombie, what if I breathe something in and mutate?”
Listening from next door, Zhang Wei blinked. This guy, Qin Shaofeng, was actually pretty smart.
He’d figured out that even without a bite, you could still turn.
Zhang Ya’s shouting gradually grew weaker…
