- Chapter 11 - Zhang Wei Takes Action
Qin Shaofeng and the others were terrified and began to distance themselves from Zhang Ya.
Zhang Ya regained a bit of consciousness and cried out in despair, “Shaofeng, why are you walking away? … Come back! It hurts, come back and hold me!”
Qin Shaofeng still didn’t respond.
Hold you? What if you bite me?
Zhang Wei was listening closely next door, ear pressed against the wall.
He just wanted to see how human nature would play out in this dorm.
But he hadn’t even had time to enjoy the show when Qin Shaofeng gritted his teeth and barked out, “Everyone, give me a hand. Throw Zhang Ya out!”
“Off the fifth floor?” someone asked.
“Are you stupid? Just throw her outside the door. If we lift her too high and she scratches someone, then what? That guy Zhang Wei was right—her foot injury came from a zombie.”
“Unbelievable. Weren’t they all lovey-dovey just a moment ago?” Zhou An chimed in.
“Yeah.”
Zhang Wei immediately sensed danger. If Zhang Ya was thrown out just like that, it would be as if nothing had happened.
And that meant his stash of supplies in the dorm would still be occupied by Qin Shaofeng and those bastards.
That was a major problem—it would seriously disrupt his future plans.
He wouldn’t survive the first seven days of the outbreak.
Because right now, he only had about ten buns, a few packs of instant noodles, two bowls of pickled mustard-flavored ramen, and a third of a water jug.
He and Zhou An wouldn’t starve to death, but there wasn’t enough to maintain peak physical condition either.
And during the early stages of a zombie outbreak, physical strength was everything if you wanted to survive.
This “initial phase” was when zombies hunted down every exposed human. Only after infecting and transforming the majority would the outbreak reach its peak.
By then, the remaining survivors hiding indoors would be surrounded.
Since zombies had a basic predatory instinct, they could smell the scent of the living.
So, no matter where you hid, unless it was an airtight space with no airflow, you could still be tracked and surrounded.
Even if you weren’t caught, you’d likely starve to death.
And a person who died of starvation would most likely mutate into a zombie too.
It was a vicious cycle.
Zhang Wei suspected that the virus already existed in the bodies of the living. The source of infection at the school was still unclear, but he believed many were probably asymptomatic carriers.
The virus probably wasn’t airborne. If it were, there wouldn’t be so much variation—it was likely spread through the water supply.
Imagine being a survivor trapped inside, with zombies roaming outside. What could you do?
No way out. No way forward. Just death.
Zhang Wei knew he couldn’t stay holed up in dorm 512. There just wasn’t enough food.
If he didn’t leave soon and ended up surrounded by zombies, he’d starve to death there.
And the only thing left behind would be another zombie in a school uniform.
Plus, there were too many people next door.
Even if Zhang Ya died, there wouldn’t be enough food to go around. He had to…
Without hesitation, Zhang Wei opened the door and stepped out.
Taking advantage of the zombie-free hallway, he gestured at Zhou An to follow him.
The two of them quietly snuck downstairs and dragged the body lying outside the dorm manager’s office back upstairs.
It was the only corpse Zhang Wei hadn’t stabbed when he went to retrieve the keys.
The body was still twitching and making strange noises from its throat as they moved it.
Clearly, it was on the verge of turning.
Zhang Wei propped the corpse up against the door to dorm 511.
He stood behind it, keeping it upright to prevent it from falling over.
He motioned for Zhou An to return to dorm 512.
The corpse was tall, and with Zhang Wei hiding behind it, he was nearly invisible.
As he kept watch on his surroundings, Zhang Wei also stayed alert in case the nearly-mutated zombie made a sudden move.
Inside room 511, Zhang Ya, who had suddenly regained clarity, screamed like a banshee, “Qin Shaofeng! You’re really throwing me out? You… you… waaah…”
She coughed up a mouthful of bl00d.
Everyone inside was terrified. The room fell into chaos.
“If it weren’t for our past, I’d have killed you already! I’m only throwing you out to protect everyone else. If you don’t turn, we’ll let you back in later!” Qin Shaofeng snapped.
“Qin Shaofeng… you bastard!!” Zhang Ya’s bloodshot eyes locked on him with hatred.
Qin Shaofeng said coldly, “Move, now! She’s about to turn! If we don’t act, we’re all dead!”
“Vice class rep, I’m sorry. You have to go,” Li Xiaoqian said, pushing from behind, her voice trembling with fear.
Zhang Ya kept coughing bl00d and seemed to collapse to her knees. “Qin Shaofeng! I’ll kill you… I’ll kill you! Even if I become a zombie, I won’t let you off!”
She was practically being dragged across the floor.
In her desperation, Zhang Ya reached out to grab anything she could.
Suddenly, she caught hold of a sausage.
It must’ve fallen on the floor earlier.
Without thinking, she hurled it at Qin Shaofeng.
He tilted his head and dodged it.
Zhang Ya kept struggling against being thrown out, while Li Xiaoqian and Qin Shaofeng continued to push with all their strength.
Xu Long silently pressed a pillow over her neck to keep her from biting anyone.
Liu Feng pinned her arms behind her back so she couldn’t scratch.
Zhang Cheng stood by with Xu Long’s mop handle, ready for anything.
Everyone worked together, coordinating their efforts.
“Qin Shaofeng… you heartless bastard… did you never love me? Even in death, I won’t let you go!”
“Xu Long, didn’t you like me too? Help me! If you save me, I’ll be your girlfriend!”
“Do it!” Qin Shaofeng shouted, wrapping Zhang Ya’s head in a shirt and delivering a vicious kick that almost dislocated her neck.
At that moment, two other boys finally joined in, lifting Zhang Ya off the ground.
The remaining two girls, trembling, ran over to help open the door.
But Zhang Cheng stopped them.
Holding his mop handle in a defensive stance, he slowly reached out to unlock the door himself.
But most of his attention was on Zhang Ya, afraid she’d break free and attack.
No matter how hard she struggled, no one let go.
With a click, the door opened a crack—only to reveal a corpse twitching violently outside.
Suddenly, the corpse’s eyes snapped open, and it lunged into the room.
Zhang Cheng, caught off guard, was bitten on the wrist, losing a huge chunk of flesh. He screamed in agony, nearly fainting from the pain.
The zombie, driven mad by the scent of so many living people, had already mutated.
It was only because Zhang Wei had been pushing against it with a blanket from Zhou An that it hadn’t turned around.
“Ahhh!” one of the girls screamed and stumbled back.
The boys were panicking too. Liu Feng, summoning courage from who-knows-where, slammed the door shut again from the inside.
Zhang Wei stabbed the zombie in the head with a watermelon knife, then dipped the zombie’s clothes in bl00d and smeared it all over the peephole on the door.
Now they wouldn’t be able to see what was outside.
He twisted the doorknob violently, scaring everyone inside.
“There’s a zombie! A zombie outside!” someone screamed.
Zhang Wei felt satisfied at last.
He left the zombie’s body behind like a pile of rotten meat and slipped back into his own dorm.
Less than thirty seconds later, Zhang Ya started roaring.
This time, she had really turned.
Liu Feng and the others probably wanted to die now. The door was too dangerous to open, but Zhang Ya had mutated inside!
A girl screamed, “Run! Zhang Ya really turned!”
Another shouted, “Zhang Cheng is twitching too!”
The dorm exploded into chaos—footsteps, screams, crashes—music to Zhang Wei’s ears.
Soon, he heard Qin Shaofeng’s desperate voice: “A-Ya… it’s me! It’s Shaofeng—the one who loves you the most! Don’t bite me—aaah!!”
