Zombie Siege: The Road to Survival Begins at School - Chapter 22
“How’d it go? They didn’t see you, right? Are you sure it was Xu Long?” Zhang Wei asked excitedly.
Lu Renjia nodded, then shook his head.
“We’ll talk more once we’re back on the fifth floor,” Zhang Wei decided.
Charging into the dorm now would be reckless.
First of all, the enemy was in the dark while they were exposed. They didn’t know where the others were positioned or what kind of weapons they had.
Second, the ringing phone in front of the dorm had drawn a massive number of zombies. If they made any noise and hundreds or thousands of zombies swarmed the building, they’d never make it out alive.
“What did you actually see just now?” Zhao Zhenxiong couldn’t help but ask.
He didn’t get what the nodding-then-shaking-his-head meant. Honestly, what he really wanted to know was—were there any girls? Spotting a girl in the boys’ dorm would be a rare sight.
“They saw me—but it wasn’t Xu Long.”
“They saw you?”
“Yeah. I saw the door open and someone peeked out. As soon as they saw me, they slipped back inside. Good thing I reacted fast and pretended to be a zombie, twitching like I had polio or something. I probably scared them off… But that person definitely wasn’t Xu Long. Xu Long is almost 1.8 meters tall—he practically brushes the top of the doorframe. This guy? Barely 1.6.”
“We move at dawn!” Zhang Wei declared.
The people in Room 410 were probably still wide awake after being startled by the ringtone. They’d likely stay up talking late into the night.
And dawn was when people were the groggiest—easiest to catch off guard, easier to confuse and manipulate.
That’s when Zhang Wei would strike Xu Long. Keep the focus on him and go in hard. The others probably wouldn’t even step in.
“Let’s call it Operation Dawn.”
Zhang Wei remembered from his past life how missions always had code names. Sometimes, entire battalions would be mobilized under a single codename. Like that time they stormed the water plant.
Back in Room 512, the four of them returned. Zhang Wei brought over a big water jug and poured some into each person’s empty bottle. Then he handed out a piece of bread to everyone.
They had to take back the food and water supply—there was no surviving without it. Dog food was still meant for dogs. Only if there was absolutely nothing else to eat…
“You got a weapon?” Zhang Wei looked over at Zhao Zhenxiong, who was basically empty-handed.
Zhao Zhenxiong dug through his backpack and pulled out a screwdriver—about the length of chopsticks. Better than nothing, barely.
“Lend me your lighter.” Zhang Wei took it from him and slipped a can of hairstyling spray—found earlier in Room 512—into the side pocket of his bag.
This was his secret weapon.
As the sky began to lighten, Zhang Wei opened the door to Room 512, but didn’t close it behind him. That way, they had a retreat route—if things went sideways, they could dash back and lock the door.
The four of them crept downstairs one after another, not making a single sound.
A quick glance outside confirmed it—there were more zombies now.
Zhang Wei’s decoy phone must have drawn in even more overnight.
They crouched down to stay out of sight. The four of them pressed their backs against the wall, two on each side, avoiding the peephole’s field of view, positioning themselves right beside Room 410.
One hour passed.
Then two.
After a little over two hours, Zhang Wei finally heard rustling sounds from inside.
By now, the sun was already high in the sky.
These people were either extremely bold or incredibly careless—not even leaving someone to stand guard.
Soon, someone yawned and pushed open the door. Without hesitation, Zhang Wei kicked it open.
The guy collapsed just like Zhang Wei had once done—flat on his butt.
But the moment Zhang Wei stepped in, he was stunned. This wasn’t a typical dorm room—it was a classroom.
Zhang Wei remembered now—after the school expanded enrollment, the dorm buildings were actually converted from old classrooms.
Some large classrooms had been divided into three rooms with a couple of partition walls. But apparently, this one didn’t have any walls at all—it was a massive shared dorm.
Inside were over a dozen metal bunk beds. If each bed housed two people—top and bottom—that meant dozens could live here.
There was even a ping pong table in the middle of the room.
“So the rumors were true. Our school really does have a big shared dorm for the sports students,” Zhao Zhenxiong said in surprise.
Zhang Wei had heard the same. Sports students had different schedules—early mornings and late nights—so the school kept them together in one area to avoid disturbing the other students.
Zhang Wei had always been a bit introverted and didn’t have many friends in the athletics department. He had no idea their dorm was just downstairs.
What’s more, this giant dorm had two entrances—Rooms 410 and 411. No one would’ve guessed that those two doors led to the same space.
Now that the lights were on, Zhang Wei swept his eyes across the room. One, two, three… twelve people in total—including the two missing girls.
Xu Long was also among them.
Hu Die ran over excitedly and threw herself into Lu Renjia’s arms.
Lu Renjia glanced at her questioningly. Hu Die shyly shook her head, signaling that the boys hadn’t done anything bad to them last night.
Xu Long had leapt up the moment Zhang Wei kicked the door open, clearly startled.
But then he glanced around and regained his confidence. What could four guys do against ten?
Of course, Xu Long didn’t count Hu Die and Li Xiaoqian as fighters.
He knew the real threat was Zhang Wei, the once-timid kid.
As for Zhou An and Lu Renjia? Xu Long already knew what they were like—no threat at all.
“Return our food, and I’ll let the past go,” Zhang Wei said. Since Hu Die and Li Xiaoqian seemed unharmed, he thought it best to just get out while they could.
These ten guys were all athletes. With his current strength, there was no way he could take them all.
He had experience dealing with zombies, sure—but fighting ten people hand-to-hand? That was something only Ip Man could pull off.
And clearly, he wasn’t Ip Man. He’d only drag his friends down with him.
Still… he doubted any of these guys would actually fight to the death for Xu Long.
Should he just kill Xu Long and be done with it?
As that thought crossed his mind, Zhang Wei pulled a rag from his pocket and tightly wrapped it around the hand holding the watermelon knife.
In a fight, it was easy to lose your grip—pain, bl00d, or a well-timed snatch could leave you disarmed.
And once that happened, you were just a punching bag. A lamb for slaughter.
But with the cloth wrapped tight—knife in hand—he felt invincible.
Just as Zhang Wei was about to lunge at Xu Long, Li Xiaoqian ran out and stood between them, yelling, “Stop, stop! We’re all classmates here. Do we really have to go this far?”
Zhang Wei turned to look at her. She used to be kind to him, but if she kept standing in his way like this… he wouldn’t hold back next time.
