- Chapter 24 - Showdown with Xu Long
Zhang Wei had already predicted that Li Xiaoqian would do something like this.
It was definitely her who opened the door for Xu Long.
Before he left earlier, he had repeatedly warned her and Hu Die not to open the door for anyone other than him or the others in their group.
In fact, this was also a test Zhang Wei had set for Li Xiaoqian.
If she passed, he’d consider her a teammate.
“Li Xiaoqian, what are you doing?” Lu Renjia asked, also confused.
If she didn’t leave now, there might not be another chance. If she was willing to come with them, he’d still try to persuade Zhang Wei to accept her.
Lu Renjia understood Zhang Wei’s intentions. Leaving the dorm now was a way to protect the group.
Hu Die looked like she wanted to say something but held back.
“I… I want to stay with them…” Li Xiaoqian said awkwardly.
Zhang Wei nodded without a word.
His hesitation wasn’t just because Li Xiaoqian had helped him before.
It was that, out of a class of forty or fifty students—or even the thousands of people in the entire school—only a handful remained.
The loneliness of the apocalypse was something that Lu Renjia, Hu Die, and the others couldn’t yet comprehend.
Give it a few days, when they realized that everyone they knew—family, friends—was gone, they’d feel the crushing weight of despair and depression too.
So, when it came to people from the past, even those with flaws or who had made mistakes, Zhang Wei intended to save whoever he could.
Li Xiaoqian had only been his deskmate once.
In a high school life without many friends, she had at least left a faint impression on him.
After being classmates for three years, Zhang Wei just couldn’t watch her die without doing anything.
But if she insisted on walking into her own doom, he wasn’t going to bother saving her.
“Zhang Wei, I’m sorry. I was the one who opened the door for Xu Long yesterday. He came asking for supplies and… I really like him. I couldn’t stand the thought of him starving to death. But I didn’t expect him to take all the food. I couldn’t stop him.”
“I see. Good luck,” Zhang Wei said, not even turning around as he walked out.
Just when things seemed to settle down and tensions had eased, Xu Long suddenly exploded with rage upon hearing Li Xiaoqian apologizing to Zhang Wei over and over again. Furious, he grabbed a basketball off the ground and hurled it at the back of Zhang Wei’s head.
Xu Long was only about seven or eight meters away from Zhang Wei, who was near the door. Li Xiaoqian didn’t even have time to shout “Watch out” before the basketball hit him squarely in the head and bounced off.
At that close range, even a backboard would have shaken from the impact.
Unsurprisingly, Zhang Wei was knocked to his knees.
“Damn it…” Zhang Wei slowly stood up.
Seeing that Lu Renjia, Hu Die, and Zhou An had already left, Zhang Wei closed the dorm door behind them and locked it.
“Well, my teammates are outside now, so I don’t have to hold back anymore.”
Ignoring the people outside pounding on the door in panic, Zhang Wei turned around and said, “Xu Long, I gave you so many chances. But every time, you threw them away like garbage…”
If that had been a shot put instead of a basketball, Zhang Wei knew he might already be dead.
Li Xiaoqian thought Zhang Wei was about to kill Xu Long and desperately threw herself in front of him, only to be yanked aside by Xu Long, who grabbed her hair and flung her away.
“Get lost! I don’t need some dumb b1tch like you talking for me,” Xu Long spat.
Even the other sports students watching started to feel disgusted. She was trying to help him, for god’s sake.
Li Xiaoqian tried to say something else but was pulled back by one of the others.
“This is life and death between Zhang Wei and Xu Long. Why are you getting involved?”
Forget the apocalypse—even before the world ended, these two probably would’ve fought to the death.
Zhang Wei raised his knife. Between him and Xu Long, only one would walk out alive.
Suddenly, one of the athletes, after getting a signal from Xu Long, rushed at Zhang Wei from the side.
He tackled Zhang Wei and slammed him against a water dispenser, trying to hold him down.
The knife in Zhang Wei’s hand was wrapped in cloth, so even under that full-force impact, it didn’t fall.
After confirming the other athletes weren’t joining in, Zhang Wei drove his knee up and shoved the blade deep into the attacker’s stomach.
He gave a brutal horizontal pull—guts spilled everywhere.
The other athletes watched, wide-eyed in shock.
The wounded guy, using the last of his strength, tried to push the knife away but couldn’t.
All he managed to do was untie the knot of the cloth wrap on Zhang Wei’s knife.
Then, with terror still in his eyes, he died.
Bl00d gushed out and soaked Zhang Wei’s hands and body. The slick bl00d made the knife too slippery to grip.
Zhang Wei didn’t bother holding onto it anymore. He stabbed it into the water dispenser’s jug.
“Xu Long…” Zhang Wei said, smiling as he stood.
Xu Long threw a punch, and Zhang Wei, instead of dodging, met it with his own.
A dull thud. Neither of them said a word afterward.
“Too careless,” Zhang Wei thought, his hand slightly numb. But he still acted unfazed.
“That punch had no strength at all. What’s wrong? Eating too much junk food lately?”
Xu Long’s punches did have some force, but compared to the past, he was far weaker.
After all, he hadn’t had a proper meal in days and was running on snacks and scraps. He could barely stand straight.
“You’re dead meat!” Xu Long grabbed Zhang Wei’s collar, trying to use his height advantage to pin him against the wall.
But Zhang Wei didn’t care. He tilted his head and rammed it into Xu Long’s nose.
Xu Long cried out and had to let go.
He touched his nose—there was bl00d.
With everyone watching, it was a humiliating sight.
Xu Long tried to grab Zhang Wei again to repeat his old trick—slapping him like before.
But Zhang Wei’s right hand broke free first and slapped Xu Long hard across the face. Stars exploded in Xu Long’s vision—his eyes could barely open.
Zhang Wei swept his leg around, knocking Xu Long to the ground.
He pounced, landing several more loud, stinging slaps.
“Xu Long, you piece of sh1t! Back in the bathroom, you slapped me like this too, didn’t you?”
“How does it feel to get a taste of your own medicine?”
Zhang Wei switched to punches, hammering Xu Long’s cheeks.
His face was a mess—tears, snot, saliva, and bl00d mixed together.
Xu Long tried to struggle, but Zhang Wei was straddling him tightly—he couldn’t move.
Xu Long bit the tip of his tongue to stay conscious.
Then he wrapped his arms around Zhang Wei, trying to strangle him to death.
Zhang Wei hammered at Xu Long’s temples, but with his neck being choked, he couldn’t use full strength.
He had no choice but to grab Xu Long’s hair with his free hand.
Xu Long grimaced in pain but didn’t loosen his grip.
Zhang Wei was turning red, veins bulging, nearly suffocating.
Then Xu Long suddenly froze, his eyes rolling back and cold sweat pouring down.
Some of the other athletes panicked—was he turning into a zombie?
Only Zhang Wei knew what had happened—his free hand had grabbed Xu Long’s family jewels.
The monkey-steals-the-peach move worked instantly.
As Xu Long screamed and let go, Zhang Wei spun around and kicked him square in the groin.
Xu Long clutched his crotch and howled in pain.
Based on that kick, Zhang Wei figured Xu Long would probably end up as a eunuch.
Would Li Xiaoqian still be so devoted to him if he became a court eunuch?
Worried that Xu Long’s screaming might attract zombies, Zhang Wei found two socks lying around—god knows whose.
“Why the hell are these socks sticky…” he muttered in disgust, shoving both socks into Xu Long’s mouth.
That shut him up. No more noise, no more attracting zombies.
Still not satisfied, Zhang Wei gave him a few more hard kicks—but just to the ass this time, not the crotch.
Then Zhang Wei turned, grabbed a disposable paper cup, filled it halfway at the dispenser, drank some, rinsed the bl00d from his hands, and drew his watermelon knife again.
“I wanted to spare you,” he said, walking toward Xu Long, “but you pushed me too far, again and again…”
Spare Xu Long? Not a chance.
This guy was a threat that had to be eliminated.
They were mortal enemies now.
Zhang Wei had no doubt—if he were the one down, Xu Long would’ve already killed him like he did Liu Feng. Maybe strangled him with a towel or thrown him off the fourth floor to the zombies.
Just then, Li Xiaoqian knelt in front of Zhang Wei, pleading with him.
“Move! Or I’ll kill you too…”
Before he could finish, Xu Long suddenly stood up, struggling.
He shoved Li Xiaoqian into Zhang Wei’s path.
Zhang Wei’s back was to a steel bunk bed—he had nowhere to dodge.
Seeing Li Xiaoqian about to fall onto his knife, he instinctively shifted its angle…
Xu Long grabbed Zhang Wei’s wrist and twisted.
The knife clattered to the floor.
Zhang Wei kicked Li Xiaoqian aside. “Get lost! You screw everything up every damn time!”
