Zombie Siege: The Road to Survival Begins at School - Chapter 27
Zhang Wei finally stepped out of the bathroom, casually wiping his hands with a dry towel.
It was a bit awkward—there was no water to flush the toilet, and no water to wash his hands either.
Zhang Wei wasn’t a clean freak, but… just now… well…
“Damn it, boss! That’s my face towel!”
“Oh, really? I saw a bunch of towels in there—seven or eight at least—and this one looked the most decent. Here, take it.”
“I don’t want it anymore. There’s no water to wash my face anyway. Keep it and use it as your hand towel from now on.”
“It’s going to rain.”
“Rain? Who knows when it’ll actually rain? Sure, it’s supposed to be the rainy season, but it hasn’t rained for seven straight days. I doubt it’ll come anytime soon.”
“Yeah, today’s the seventh day.” Zhang Wei let out a long breath.
He had finally made it through seven days.
Even though things had deviated a lot from his original plan, it was now the morning of the seventh day. If he counted the day of the exam as Day 1, then by 5 p.m. today, they would have pulled through.
As long as no uninfected people got bitten, there wouldn’t be any more new zombies.
Zhang Wei also remembered that there would be a heavy downpour on the eighth day.
He glanced at the sky—no more sunlight.
Tonight, the clouds would block the moon, followed by thunder and lightning, then a torrential rain.
That long-awaited storm would last three full days and nights.
He remembered it so clearly because, back then, he got caught in the rain and came down with a high fever. He nearly died from illness.
It was an old man who happened to save him.
That old man ran a traditional medicine clinic in an alley outside the school. Zhang Wei still remembered the name: Meilin Clinic.
It was actually a great shelter.
The rooftop of Meilin Clinic connected to the rooftops of neighboring row houses, and you could travel several kilometers just by hopping across rooftops.
He had tried that route before—it was one of his attempted escape paths.
But for now, Zhang Wei’s top priority was survival.
He didn’t even know if the school gate had been shut, trapping all the zombies inside.
Zhang Wei had a gut feeling that there were more and more student-like zombies.
He was even starting to regret using that phone ringtone to lure out Xu Long.
That stunt had drawn at least 30% more zombies to the area in front of the dorm.
But Zhang Wei had plans—even for that discarded phone.
Knowing a rainstorm was coming, he had wrapped the phone in a Durex condom before tossing it, then tied it off securely.
The phone was still lying quietly in the grass. If Zhang Wei ever retrieved it, he would find it just as intact as when he threw it.
The power outage was only temporary. Soon, the whole city would have electricity again.
But water—water would be cut off for a full three months.
“I’m going to lay out the next part of the plan,” Zhang Wei said, calling the group of three over.
“There’ll be a heavy rain tomorrow, starting tonight… My original plan was to lock the gate on the first floor, then clear out every room from the first to sixth floor, gather as many supplies as we could, and move a ton of water containers to the rooftop to collect rainwater. Then we’d bunker down and wait it out.”
“But now that there are a bunch of surviving PE students on the fourth floor, I have to change the plan. Our goal is to avoid conflict with them. So, we can’t let them find out that we have the keys to all the dorm rooms, and we also can’t go below the fifth floor to search for supplies room by room.”
“So what do we do? Do we even have enough supplies?” Zhao Zhenxiong couldn’t help asking.
“The dog food we found on the sixth floor should last us ten to fifteen days,” Zhang Wei said after carefully calculating.
“We also have some scattered food items—like protein powder, dried sweet potatoes, and spicy snacks. That should cover another three to five days.”
“Then should we just move to the rooftop?”
“No. We can go up there to collect water, but we can’t live up there. Sun, wind, and rain will make us sick easily. And in this world, getting sick is basically the same as dying—we have no antibiotics at all.”
“What about the people in Room 410?”
“They’ll try to collect rainwater too. But once they run out of milk powder and protein powder, they’ll starve. And once they starve to death, they’ll turn into zombies.”
“That’s pretty brutal.”
“There’s no helping it. We don’t have much food either. If we split it, everyone will die. I don’t want to attack living people—at least not yet—but if they turn into zombies…” Zhang Wei’s expression turned fierce.
Only he knew he wasn’t that confident about dealing with those people.
To Zhou An, Lu Renjia, and Hu Die, though, Zhang Wei seemed to handle zombies like he was slicing vegetables.
“I’ve got a follow-up plan—one that might keep all five of us alive. But there’s no point in telling you now. Let’s survive the next ten to fifteen days first.”
Zhang Wei gave them a shred of hope. But the thought of eating dog food for ten-plus days made everyone grimace.
If only they had seen this coming, they would’ve stored more real food in the dorm.
Right now, a self-heating hot pot would’ve been heaven.
After the discussion, they unlocked the iron gate on the sixth floor that led to the rooftop and carried eight buckets from Dorm 512 up there, along with several washbasins.
Zhang Wei also dug out a bunch of empty water bottles from under the bed. He’d told his “roommates” he was collecting urine samples, but the real reason was for water storage.
Buckets were great for holding water, but not convenient to carry around.
Mineral water bottles, on the other hand, were portable, could store water, and helped prevent contamination.
These plastic bottles were gold. Add some sugar or salt and they became survival-grade energy boosters in the apocalypse.
Zhang Wei even went to knock on Room 410’s door and told them there might be rain, that the rooftop door was now unlocked, and they could carry their own containers up there if they needed water.
He glanced at Xu Long—still lying there half-dead, now with a straw mat underneath him.
Zhang Wei saw that Li Xiaoqian was still tending to him. Without another word, he turned and left.
Still clinging to him, huh?
He hadn’t told the people downstairs about the master key he had for all the doors. As for the rooftop and first-floor gate keys, he made up a story—that he found them on the dead dorm supervisor on the third floor.
It made sense for a dorm supervisor to have those keys, right?
Originally, the rooftop wasn’t locked. But some school officials had seen students fighting, smoking, and drinking up there from the upper floors of the academic building. So they ordered it locked.
Zhang Wei made his way to the rooftop, and when no one was looking, he pulled out the binoculars he had stashed earlier and started surveying the distance.
Visibility wasn’t great, but he could still see several kilometers away. Cars were abandoned all over the streets, stretching out in every direction.
Those areas were all lost.
Zhang Wei didn’t know if the zombies had already taken over the whole city.
But he did know that in three years, they’d have overrun the entire world.
His city—with its relatively small population—would end up being one of the safer zones.
Which, unfortunately, would attract massive zombie hordes from larger cities.
“I’m going to survive this,” Zhang Wei muttered, gripping the monocular tightly.
