Zombie Siege: The Road to Survival Begins at School - Chapter 34
In just a split second, the three of them dropped several meters.
If this kept up, even if they didn’t die from the fall, they’d be eaten by the zombies wandering around on the first floor.
“Don’t move! You two, stop moving!” Zhang Wei yelled at Lu Renjia and Zhao Zhenxiong, who were still struggling.
Moving would only make them fall faster.
Thankfully, Zhang Wei’s warning came in time. Once the three of them stopped moving, the cable finally stopped slipping.
On the other side, Zhou An and Hu Die stood helpless.
They couldn’t reach the power cable hanging over the canopy. Earlier, it had taken multiple people just to help Zhang Wei grab onto it.
So the three of them dangled there motionless, watching as zombies on the roof of the boys’ dormitory threw themselves off like they were committing suicide.
After twenty or thirty of them crashed into the ground, the ones behind finally stopped coming.
That must’ve been the last of this wave. Bl00d and brain matter bloomed across the cement below like grotesque flowers.
A heavy stench of rot filled the air, so strong it overwhelmed even the smell of bl00d.
Zhang Wei didn’t know if the cable would slip further, so he started climbing back up slowly, aiming for a window on the fourth floor.
He hooked one foot on the windowsill to take some of the weight off the cable.
Lu Renjia and Zhao Zhenxiong understood what he was trying to do and began climbing up as well.
But the cable had slipped so far earlier that they couldn’t reach the rooftop anymore. They had no choice but to climb into the fourth-floor balcony of the girls’ dorm across the way.
Once they got inside, they kept a close eye on Zhang Wei.
He smashed the window with a kick and climbed through into a fourth-floor dorm room.
He found a stool and sat down. During the drop earlier, his hand had been scraped by the cable, tearing a large patch of skin from his palm.
To avoid infection and keep the wound from getting worse, he had to stop and patch himself up.
His backpack used to have bandages and antiseptic, but Zhang Ya had ruined them wiping her feet, so now he had to settle for a face mask and plastic tape to wrap the wound.
Compared to the time he lost an arm in his past life, this was nothing.
While Zhang Wei bandaged his hand and looked around the dorm, he didn’t find anything useful—just shampoo, body wash, towels, and toothbrushes.
Stuff like that was easy to find in the boys’ dorm too. Nothing special.
Meanwhile, Lu Renjia and Zhao Zhenxiong were tying the cable to one of the iron bunk beds in the girls’ dorm.
They wound it around several beds for extra security. Now the cable was taut again, and they didn’t have to worry about it slipping from the rooftop.
With just Zhang Wei’s weight, there was no way it could drag all those beds. And both Lu Renjia and Zhao Zhenxiong were sitting on top of them, just in case.
Once he confirmed the cable was secure, Zhang Wei started climbing again. The cable was now a solid link connecting the two dorm buildings.
Zhang Wei figured that if nothing unexpected happened, they’d now be able to move freely between the boys’ and girls’ dorms.
He still had that big ring of keys in his backpack. From this room on the fourth floor, he could open the door and access other boys’ dorm rooms—he could grab supplies from any of them.
Things like daily necessities, blankets, and clothes might come in handy. Maybe he could trade them with the survivors in the girls’ dorm.
He remembered hearing someone respond from that side before.
He just didn’t know if the girls’ dorm had a staff office. If it did, maybe they had the master key to all the rooms.
As Zhang Wei climbed across the cable, Lu Renjia and Zhao Zhenxiong were happily munching on potato chips.
Zhang Wei looked around at the messy room.
“This wasn’t us,” Zhao Zhenxiong said, pointing at the trash on the floor. “It was like this when we got here. They say girls’ dorms are always clean and smell nice. Guess that’s a lie.”
Lu Renjia nodded in agreement, still chewing.
“Here, boss. We saved this for you,” Lu Renjia said, now calling Zhang Wei “boss” like Zhou An did.
“Why’s it only half a bag? Don’t you still have an unopened one? I like that flavor—give me that one.”
“Uh… I was gonna save that for Hu Die.”
“What the hell, man? I risked my life for you, and you’re still thinking about your little girlfriend?” Zhang Wei pretended to be mad.
“No, no, it’s not like that—it’s her birthday today.”
“Birthday?”
Zhang Wei rummaged through his backpack and pulled out a box—a small, fancy gift box of candy.
“Give this to her.”
“What is it?”
“Happy birthday to you…” As Lu Renjia opened it, music started playing. Inside were neatly arranged, colorful fruit candies. Tiny lights blinked like a carousel. It was kind of special.
“Thanks, boss,” Lu Renjia said with a grin, handing over the bag of chips to Zhang Wei too.
Zhang Wei didn’t take it. He spoke absentmindedly, “I found that candy box in Room 602 on the sixth floor. Thought it looked interesting, so I kept it. My original plan was to use it when I went down to lock the gate on the first floor—I was gonna open it and toss it to distract the zombies so I could sneak by. But then my watermelon knife broke, and I couldn’t clear the zombies below the fourth floor, so the plan fell apart…”
“Good thing we had this power cable,” Lu Renjia added.
“Yeah. Good thing.” Zhang Wei didn’t finish the thought.
Without this cable, Hu Die would probably be dead by now. When the three of them went downstairs to help Zhang Wei, they hadn’t locked the rooftop gate.
The four of them could’ve taken shelter in Room 512, 511, or even Zhao Zhenxiong’s Room 608. But Hu Die would’ve had nowhere to hide.
“You guys better start listening to me from now on. I left you the key to the gate on purpose, in case something unexpected happened… but I don’t blame you. You came down to help me, after all,” Zhang Wei said.
“Often, we don’t just fight for ourselves. We have to think about others too.” Zhang Wei looked out the window, eyes distant.
In his past life, he gave up on survival just so he wouldn’t drag his teammates down.
So many have sacrificed with such courage. Would they be proud if I could change fate itself?
If this is a world split in two… would the people in the other world grieve for my death?
