- Chapter 6 - Water Supply Depleted
“Zhang Wei, not opening the door was your fault—you’re too selfish! But since you did prepare some food, we’re willing to let you stay here. Just help Zhang Ya disinfect her wound and apologize. Then we’ll let it go,” Qin Shaofeng said coldly, staring at Zhang Wei.
In Qin Shaofeng’s eyes, Zhang Wei was still that useless desk mate from before.
“Let me stay here?” Zhang Wei’s expression turned strange.
This was his own dorm room.
It made sense if Xu Long and Zhang Cheng wanted to come in—they also lived in this dorm.
But Qin Shaofeng? If Zhang Wei remembered correctly, this room had absolutely nothing to do with him.
Qin Shaofeng had just tagged along during their escape and ended up here by chance.
So why not go back to his dorm?
“Even if Qin Shaofeng had a key to his room, would he dare act alone?”
Zhang Wei figured that Qin Shaofeng had also seen their classmates suddenly turn into zombies.
As for Zhang Ya… Zhang Wei wasn’t sure if the zombie virus had already affected her brain. Even now, she was still acting all high and mighty just because she was pretty.
As if this were still a normal classroom, before the zombie outbreak.
Zhang Wei glanced at Qin Shaofeng, as if looking at a dead man.
If Qin Shaofeng had been even slightly fair and rational…
Zhang Wei could have let go of past resentment and extended a hand in this survival game.
But now, what Zhang Wei was thinking was how to use others to do the killing for him.
He looked at the man whose hand he had nearly chopped off—now unconscious.
Zhang Wei slowly walked over, still gripping the knife.
“Fine. I’ll apologize… Sorry, Zhang Ya. I was wrong to call you a dog earlier. I didn’t expect you’d actually pick up scraps to eat.”
Zhang Ya was furious, but seeing the knife in Zhang Wei’s hand, she had no choice but to hold back her insults.
Zhang Wei took a cotton swab and some antiseptic from Xu Long and crouched down to treat her wound.
Of course, he wasn’t actually disinfecting—it was just an excuse to examine the injury.
Zhang Ya had been acting a bit off.
Sure, she could be pretentious, but she usually had some basic sense. Today, she was acting like she’d lost all reason.
“Could this be an early symptom of the zombie virus reaching her brain?”
Zhang Wei had suspected from the beginning that Zhang Ya had been scratched by a zombie.
A foot injury? Highly suspicious.
Up close, he could finally see through the bl00d.
He poured antiseptic over the wound, washing the bl00d away.
Zhang Ya screamed in pain.
As the wound became clearer, Zhang Wei saw it was about half a centimeter deep, nearly exposing the bone.
Thankfully, it hadn’t hit a major artery.
But he could now confirm it was a zombie scratch.
Some of the flesh was already turning gray and emitted a faint, rotting smell—only noticeable up close.
From his past-life experience, Zhang Wei estimated that Zhang Ya would probably turn within a few hours.
The virus would circulate through her bloodstream and eventually reach her brain.
She was beyond saving.
Zhang Wei’s eyes gleamed with calculation. He could use the chaos of her transformation to eliminate more of those who wouldn’t fall in line.
It would be bloody and some might die, but he had no choice.
Only by dragging everyone down with him would he and Zhou An stand a chance at surviving.
There wasn’t enough food left for this many people.
Zhang Wei glanced at Zhang Ya, considering which part of her to target once she turned.
His memories from his past life were hazy, almost dreamlike, but one thing he knew for sure—zombies only stopped moving if their heads were destroyed.
“You bastard! Do you even know how to disinfect properly?” Zhang Ya suddenly cursed, unable to take the pain any longer.
“You called me a bastard? I don’t even have a mother!” Zhang Wei snapped and slapped her hard across the face.
Zhang Ya was knocked straight onto the bed.
“If you didn’t want the treatment, you could’ve just said so! Qin Shaofeng, your turn!” Zhang Wei tossed the supplies and walked away before anyone could react.
Xu Long and Qin Shaofeng stared in disbelief.
When had that coward Zhang Wei become so aggressive?
As Zhang Ya muttered something under her breath—probably another curse—Zhang Wei pretended not to hear it.
She rubbed her cheek, embarrassed that everyone had seen her get slapped. She stood up and headed to the bathroom.
“Where are you going, Zhang Ya?” Qin Shaofeng followed her, trying to sound concerned.
Zhang Ya was heading toward the bathroom.
“I’m going to wash my face. I’m burning up. We ran so much just now—I’m sweating all over. I’ll take a quick shower and get some sleep. Maybe someone will come rescue us tomorrow.”
But once she got inside, she found the showerhead completely dry.
Some guessed the sudden zombie outbreak had caused the water supply to shut off.
Only Zhang Wei knew the truth—it wasn’t just the school.
The whole city’s water system was down. Something had happened to the municipal water plant.
He even suspected the water was contaminated, which might explain why so many seemingly healthy students had suddenly turned.
They probably drank unclean water.
“No water? Ugh! Guess I’ll have to use the water in the bucket!” Zhang Ya spotted a full bucket next to the tiled wall.
Zhang Wei had filled it during the last few minutes before the water ran dry.
Fuming, Zhang Ya called out, “Who filled this bucket?”
“When I came back, I noticed the water pressure was low. Figured it might cut off soon, so I filled it up just in case. Might not come back for a long time. You probably shouldn’t waste it,” Zhang Wei answered calmly.
He knew—starting now, the school, and likely the whole city, wouldn’t have water again.
If Zhang Ya used it all for a shower, it’d be gone for good.
The water wasn’t drinkable, but it could still be used to flush toilets—or be boiled and condensed into distilled water.
“Zhang Ya, maybe don’t take a shower? With the zombie outbreak, there’s no telling when water will come back… That might be our lifeline,” a student tried to reason with her.
He had a student ID with the blurry name starting with “Lu.”
Another girl clung to his arm—her ID said “Hu Die.”
“What’s it to you if she wants to take a cold shower?” Qin Shaofeng grabbed the guy by the collar.
“I just meant, Zhang Wei has a point. It’s summer. We only have two boxes of bottled water…”
“It’s summer! I’m sweaty! We’ll get rain in a few days anyway,” Zhang Ya insisted, becoming more and more stubborn.
“But we can’t access the roof to collect rain without a key. And opening the window to catch it could attract zombies,” Zhang Wei tried again, but Qin Shaofeng and Xu Long blocked him.
Zhang Ya turned and, seeing both guys backing her up, grew more confident.
“Relax, I said we’ll get water, and we will. It’s not like we’re in some desert in Africa. Geez… But Zhang Wei, I’ll admit—you’re cheap, but at least you were thoughtful enough to prepare my bathwater.”
She sneered. Whether it was the slap or the virus messing with her brain, she was unbelievably stubborn now.
“If you have to shower, let me use the toilet first. Just a minute,” Zhang Wei said, suddenly changing his tone.
“Fine. Just make it quick!” Zhang Ya assumed he’d caved under pressure.
With no one stopping him, Zhang Wei entered the bathroom and eyed the bucket.
“If you’re so dead set on showering, then enjoy it. Don’t blame me later!”
Zhang Wei grabbed a full bottle of toilet cleaner and half a bottle of bleach and dumped both into the bucket.
“If you guys are gonna mess with me, don’t blame me for returning the favor.”
Maybe it wasn’t mature, but right now, Zhang Wei didn’t care. He’d do whatever felt good.
Eventually, Zhang Ya came in, ignoring everyone else, and locked the door to start her shower.
No one tried to stop her.
Meanwhile, Qin Shaofeng and Xu Long stood guard outside the bathroom like she was some kind of precious flower, making sure no one else got close.
Then came a scream.
A loud clatter. The bucket had been knocked over.
Xu Long and Qin Shaofeng rushed inside.
Zhang Ya was curled up like a shrimp, barely covered, her skin red and raw.
A strong, acrid smell filled the entire bathroom.
“Oh crap—I forgot. That bucket was for cleaning the floor… I put bleach in it,” Zhang Wei said casually.
Of course, he left out the part about the toilet cleaner, which was even more corrosive.
Zhang Ya scrambled out of the bathroom, her skin inflamed from her shoulders to her neck.
Xu Long quickly fetched a clean towel for her.
“Zhang Wei… it was you! It had to be you!” Zhang Ya screamed.
“Yeah, it was me trying to stop you from wasting the water. You wouldn’t listen. Even Jesus couldn’t stop you. What was I supposed to do?”
Zhang Ya turned to Qin Shaofeng. “Kill him! Help me kill Zhang Wei! Throw him off the fifth floor and let the zombies eat him!”
The other survivors looked at each other in shock—but no one moved.
They didn’t like Zhang Wei, sure, but they were still just students. Bullies, maybe, but not killers.
Throwing Zhang Wei off the balcony would be murder.
That was very different from kicking someone around.
Qin Shaofeng shot Zhang Wei a cold, threatening look, then turned to soothe Zhang Ya. “Calm down. Don’t stoop to his level. When this is over, we’ll…”
The rest of the sentence faded into murmurs.
Zhang Wei picked up his knife and slowly approached Zhang Ya.
She panicked—until he leaned in and whispered:
“Wanna hear a secret? I also peed in that bucket. Just a little bit. But unless you want everyone to know you bathed in my piss, you’d better behave and stop messing with me.”
His last sentence was loud enough for everyone to hear, but the rest was just between them.
Zhang Ya’s face turned ghostly pale.
Others tried to lighten the mood. “It’s just bleach—look on the bright side, at least it disinfected her skin.”
Zhang Ya winced, trying not to cry from the stinging pain.
“Something this serious happened on campus… Rescue teams should be arriving soon, right?” someone muttered. After all, that injured guy was barely breathing anymore.
…
“Ah! It hurts—it’s coming in waves!” Zhang Ya, now wearing Xu Long’s jacket, suddenly cried out and rushed to sit on the bed.
